Mahindra NuvoSport SUV sits at the top of the sub-four meter range from the popular UV maker that offers three compact SUVs in its line-up. Priced above TUV300, the NuvoSport series is available for Rs 7.42 lakh which goes right up to Rs 9.87 lakh. Featuring a muscular front profile, the bulky SUV offers capacious interiors with capacity to accommodate seven people. The SUV features a 1.5 litre diesel powertrain mated to a manual transmission and there is also an option of an AMT gearbox. Interiors have also been spruced up including styling updates and addition of new features. The model series is available in six variants namely-N4, N4+, N6, N6 AMT, N8 and N8 AMT. Slotted one notch above TUV300, Mahindra NuvoSport price in India is positioned slightly higher than former.
Based on the new Scorpio ladder-frame chassis, NuvoSport has an aggressive front end. The bonnet is wide and is placed high featuring sharp lines that lend it an aggressive stance. There is a wide intake on the bonnet for top-mounted intercooler. The grille in front goes pretty well with the entire front look, it features the regular vertical fillets finished in black seen in most of the Mahindras. Flanking the radiator grille are pulled back head lamps that appear sharp and sculpted. LED daytime running lights are placed right above the headlamps in the high end variants, whereas the lower grades get only LEDs.
Rounded fog lamps are enclosed in black housing and front bumper wears dual tone colour theme. A brief honeycomb grille is placed in between the black cladding and the silver skid plate. The black cladding is all across the SUV and tyres are large or rather fat with minimal gap between arches. Side profile is a bit suave, especially the window frame which is too plane jane. The beltline runs parallel to the window frame and is supported by character lines on the flank. Rear features an integrated spoiler, vertically stacked tail lamps, mounted spare wheel with a cover and a door handle allowing easy ingress and egress from back.
Inside the cabin there is enough space, the seven seat layout includes two rows which can accommodate five people, whereas two jump seats are provided at the back. The jump seats are standard across trims. There is a visible resemblance with other Mahindras on the inside, especially dashboard that reminds of younger sibling TUV300. In terms of space, the cabin is comfortable as there is generous legroom and shoulder room for passengers seated in front as well as rear. Cabin features dual tone colour theme, the long upright centre console comes with large AC vents, a touchscreen followed by dials and buttons. There are two cup holders on the floor console and an arm rest is placed in the centre of the front seats. Instrument cluster is large and clearly visible, the SUV also gets a flat three spoke steering wheel with mounted controls. The boot space is ample at 412 litres which can also be increased to 850 litres by folding the second row seats.
NuvoSport is available only in diesel engine option; powering the sub-four meter SUV is a 1.5 litre, three cylinder, two-stage turbocharger mHawk 100 diesel powertrain featuring two drive modes-Power and Economy. The diesel mill is good for maximum power output of 100bhp at 3750 rpm along with top torque of 240Nm between 1600 to 2800 rpm. Switch to economy mode and the torque figure drops to 180Nm, but of course mileage figure goes up. Transmission options comprise of a five-speed manual gearbox and AMT tranny. The AMT option is available only on the N6 and N8 variants, while rest of the line-up is available in five-speed manual tranny. The five-speed AMT gearbox is the same unit that serves in TUV300.
Front profile features LED daytime running lights, rounded fog lamps, black finished grille and skid plate. Flanks get black cladding, side footsteps, rear footsteps, star-spoked 16 inch alloy wheels, body painted ORVMs and body coloured outside door handles. Inside the cabin seats are covered with premium dual tone upholstery, chrome accent is visible around AC vents and knob and branded scuff plates add to the overall styling.
Powered by the mHawk 100 diesel engine, NuvoSport is claimed to return ARAI rated fuel economy of 17.45 kmpl. The fuel economy figure is achieved in the sport mode and as you switch to the ECO mode, the engine tends to turn more frugal. The three cylinder engine as Mahindra says it is the same unit that powers the TUV300 but it has been calibrated to yield higher output. In regards to performance, the engine comes to life post 1500 rpm, prior to this figure it seems unresponsive. The five-speed manual transmission does pretty well and the AMT unit taken from TUV300 also provides decent driving experience, although the gear shifting isn’t seamless but overall it does a fair job.
Cabin features 6.2 inch infotainment system with display screen with audio, Bluetooth, USB and AUX in the range topping trim, while the rest of the grades come with 2-DIN audio system with USB and AUX. Driver information system and micro hybrid technology are missing in the AMT versions.
Braking power is derived from disc brakes in front and for rear Mahindra has relied on drum units. There are other vital braking features like anti-lock-braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution that make sure the vehicle does not skid or roll in case brakes are exerted abruptly.
Mahindra has included key safety features on NuvoSport, like airbags in front for driver and co-passenger are available across model series save for the base variant. Similarly, ABS with EBD is absent in the range starting trim. Some of the standard safety features on board include collapsible steering column, side intrusion beams, digital immobiliser and child lock on middle and rear door. Seat belt reminder lamp and seat belt with height adjuster are also missing in the base variant and fog lamps in front are available only on the top end trim.
A host of comfort goodies have been packed in the SUV like the wing mirrors on the outside can be adjusted electrically, the power steering can be tilted and features mounted audio and cruise controls. Mobile charging points are provided in front and second row and arm rests are also present in both the rows. The driver and co-passenger seats get lumbar support whereas height adjuster is available only on the driver’s seat. Second row gets double dump 60:40 split back seats that can be folded and reclined. There are various storage points inside like a utility box on the floor console, sunglass holder on the roof console, cup holder in centre console, bottle holders, magazine pockets and seat back pockets etc.
The tyres are large and fat and come shod with redesigned star-spoked alloy rims that enhance the overall outer appeal. Considering the bulky stance of the SUV, Mahindra has made sure that tyres do not look under-sized. Alloy rims which are available on select variants get a quirky design.
NuvoSport has two very strong rivals to fight with in the sub-four meter SUV segment one is Ford’s contemporary looking EcoSport that has been around from the very beginning and is a popular option in this price range. On the other hand there is Maruti’s new Vitara Brezza which has been received well by the customers and has the potential to grab a huge chunk of the segment. Mahindra NuvoSport price for the range starting variant is relatively higher than arch rivals, especially Maruti Vitara Brezza, however the price difference between EcoSport and NuvoSport is marginal.
