- Modern Design
- Tech-Loaded Cabin
- Improved Ride Quality
Cons
- Lack Of A Diesel Engine
- Amt Unit Lacks Refinement
- Boot Space
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno has crossed many a milestone in its successful journey in the market. The new Baleno has a wide range of new features. While a different Auto gearbox has taken some of the spirit away it'll appeal to the money conscious. So, it really hasn't remained true to the premium tag! But it is all the tech that has really made the Baleno a car for the present and even the future, one that is more than capable of taking on its popular rivals.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno has always been a popular premium hatchback car. The 2022 version takes things up a notch, offering the same value proposition with a design facelift, new body panels, revamped interiors, and more kit.
The shape and stance of the 2022 Baleno remain the same, although it gets all-new body panels with a wider and flatter bonnet and a bigger grille. There is a sizable chrome element now at the bottom of the grille, while the lower bumper looks more sculpted with new LED fog lamps as well. The new LED headlamps are the biggest differentiator from the previous version, with the signature NEXA three-block DRLs (daytime running lamps). These are wider at the bottom, while sweeping into the fenders in front like the earlier model. The nose of the car looks wider and more balanced and the same design play is visible at the back, with the LED tail lights flowing into the tailgate.
The rear bumper is on the taller side, giving you a comparatively higher luggage loading lip. The boot space is however impressive at 318 litres. There is generous chrome treatment with strips under the windows while the 16-inch dual-tone precision-cut alloys look the part. The car is slightly lower and shorter now, although this is hardly noticeable. All said and done, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno continues to be a looker.
The interiors have undergone a transformation in the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno with a soothing dashboard layout, using dark grey and blue elements, with hints of piano black and light grey here and there. The flat-bottom steering has a sportier touch to it, and may have been sourced from the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The analogue dials are user-friendly and get the job done perfectly. The new touch screen infotainment unit of 9 inches is a smooth touch while some design components look to be inspired by premier models. These include the speaker grilles which are clearly Audi-inspired, and the BMW like central air conditioning vents.
The interiors are high on the quality index, with a neat leatherette steering wheel, nice elbow rests, and high-quality plastics. There are backlit and toggle-like air conditioning controls. However, the knitted roof liner is a slight downer in the entire package. The door pockets are generously sized and so is the glovebox. There is good central console storage with large cup holders and even a small bin tucked under the armrest.
The seats feel nice with the front seats offering great shoulder and lateral support. The seats offer more softness and comfort, especially at the rear, along with great lateral and under-thigh support alike. Space is great at the back while tall passengers can enjoy more headroom as well. The rear armrest feels like a miss here. However, rear AC Vents and a couple of USB ports are good additions, while the front gets the standard charging USB and a 12V power socket.
The 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno gets the 9 inch touch screen infotainment system which is a step-up from the past. It offers the SmartPlay Pro+ setup for the top-end Alpha model, while the lower variants have the 7 inch touch screen unit. The Zeta unit has more SmartPlay Pro software applications, while the Delta variant has the older SmartPlay Studio interface. The Pro+ applications are updated with connected car technologies via a partner application, voice commands, Amazon Alexa integration, and more. There is an Arkamys six-speaker audio unit with several presets and more. The 360-degree camera is a segment-first addition, along with the HUD (heads-up display).
There is automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, automatic-folding mirrors, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, color MID and trip computer, and rear wash and wiper, along with keyless entry, and cruise control. A cooled glovebox, tyre pressure indicator, sunroof, wireless phone charging, and the sunroof are key misses here.
The Baleno uses a new avatar of the K12C petrol engine that is now known as the K12N. This does not keep the mild-hybrid setup, but makes the same 90 HP and 113 Nm of maximum torque. The CVT automatic option is no longer there, with the new 5-speed AMT being brought into the mix. This has enhanced fuel economy to the claimed 22.94 kmpl, while lowering overall emissions as well. The K12N is a peppy engine, although the mid-range is slightly weaker right before you hit 2000 RPM.
However, maintain your revs, and it springs back into action around the 4000 RPM mark. City cruising is also fine at lower revs. Refinement is high for the engine and the five-speed manual gets the hydraulic clutch. The gearbox is smooth and the throws feel nice. Going back to AMT from CVT does feel like a step back with regard to the overall smoothness of the car. However, the AMT works neatly with minimal hesitation levels.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno offers a refined and pleasurable driving experience. It feels well-planted, with its new suspension ensuring a better drive. There are new torsion beams at the back and rear springs, along with higher travel of 20 mm and the damping has been recalibrated as well. The driving experience is naturally more refined than before. However, there is still that stiffer feeling at times, especially when you get onto a bad pothole. The ride is softer than earlier and is good at lower speeds. Highway speeds are otherwise manageable although there is some back-seat bouncing and pitching.
The new steering makes handling a lot easier. The new version has more weight while being lighter at lower speeds. High-speed body control has also improved considerably with minimal body roll while cornering. The Baleno can work extremely well as your city runabout. It can now take bumps and potholes better as well. Yet, there is that floating aspect sometimes at higher speeds.
The Baleno's mileage figures stand at 22.35 kmpl for the manual version and 22.94 kmpl for the automatic option.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno gets several safety features, including six airbags for the top-end variants. The 360-degree camera is a good feature in this context, along with the ISOFIX child-seat mounts. These are standard features for all trims along with dual airbags. ESP and hill hold are available for the AMT variants and the Alpha manual variant as well. Rear passengers have lap belts, although three-point belts will soon become compulsory. The base Sigma variant has basic safety equipment, although the other variants are reasonably equipped. Seatbelt and speed warnings, along with rear parking sensors make up the safety equipment list.
The mid level trims or top-trims are ideal with the manual gearbox options for their drivability, performance, and refinement levels. The AGS automatic gearbox is still not as compelling as the CVT option, although the latter did have its niggles. The Zeta and Alpha variants have the best safety features, including six airbags. The automatic variant is not all that costly as compared to the manual variant. The Zeta variant is the right mix of good value and features. This is a variant worth considering. For a little more, there is the Alpha variant which has the 360-degree camera, HUD, cruise control, tinted windows, auto-dimming inside mirror, dual-tone alloys, and the 9-inch touch screen. If you want a better experience, you can go for the Alpha variant. However, the Zeta still ticks most of the boxes.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno takes on rivals like the Hyundai elite i20, Tata Altroz, and the Honda Jazz in the category. It offers more value since the i20 is costlier. The Baleno is not the biggest car in the segment. The widest is the i20 and it also has the longest wheelbase. The Jazz is the tallest and has the biggest boot in the segment.
The Baleno is the only one to offer only-petrol choices along with the Honda Jazz. The others have a couple of engine options at least. The petrol engine of the Baleno has the most power in the category and the car also offers better fuel economy than its rivals. Only the Tata Altroz is more affordable in the segment. Hence, the Baleno makes for a compelling case overall.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno pretty much covers everything that a buyer in the segment would desire. It gets a more refined engine, better ride quality, enhanced safety features, and more technology additions. The cabin is spacious, while the price point feels just right. Design-wise, it has all the ingredients to be a head-turner on the road. Agreed, the AMT option may not suit everyone or there could have been a few more features. Or the design could have been radically revamped rather than retaining the same stance. But the car is still new in several aspects and Maruti Suzuki has got the value-proposition down.

I was very particular about the style of the car that, I wanted to purchase. Its my second car. What do I say, first look at the Baleno, I fell in love with the design. Performance: Its very smooth drive, just like cutting a cake. I heard some noise, while braking Braking (Drum effect), later got used to it. Mileage: Initally, it gave me a mileage of 26.7 kms on highway. Yes ofcourse, I have to drive through heavy Chennai City traffic, every day. Not bad, the mileage is around 22+ kms. Comfort: Very Spacious. More leg Room. The Boot could have been better spacious, but that's fine for a family of 4. Cost of Ownership: Mmmh, well the spare parts are honestly not that economic to change. Paint cost is very high. I had a small dent caused by a biker in my left boot, It took at least 6500 - 7000 to change that. Safety: Yes, we can't expect the same, if u drive at 120 kms/hour and crash. Very realistic with airbags and comfortable seating. Styling: Already mentioned, I'm in love with my Baleno. Super Sleek, Sexy. Sales Support: Not bad, as expected from Maruti. They have got a service station at very corner of the street. So go for it....I have driven almost 16000 kms now. No regrets!! Just loving it.

Exterior: Bought premium silver alpha petrol on 1st Nov. without any booking... wow...its similar to costly cars like Audi n BMW etc.. new color.. DRLs, projector headlamps, stunning looks...best in segment, eye turner, comfortable, big boot, engine is good too. Interior (Features, Space and Comfort): Best space in the category. In i20, we felt claustrophobic (poor design). premium seats, 7 inch nav system, all stylish features..best in segment..no cost cutting like they did in JAZZ. Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox: As its 100 kg less, engine pickup is much better than jazz, swift and i20 petrol. Ride Quality and Handling: 195 alloy tyres hold road much better than jazz n i20. jazz tyres are much smaller, as if you are driving a bajaj scooter. Final Words: If you are planning to buy a hatchback, just go for it, don’t waste money on jazz or i20 as there is No comparison. Maruti is Maruti. If u don’t believe me just visit a nearby Nexa.

I was really confused between the Nexa Baleno RS and Baleno when I decided to buy a car. After much thought and research and finally settled for the RS. Both the car models no doubt had similarities, but the updates that RS received were not something that could be overlooked. The Nexa Baleno RS has a 1.0 litre 3-cylinder Boosterjet petrol engine and develops a maximum power of 102 PS. The mileage that this car delivers is quite impressive too. The added performance definitely makes driving the Baleno RS easier and smoother, both on city roads and highways alike.

I got Baleno Zeta version just last week and I am willing to share the experience I had. I was a little reluctant in picking Maruti as it comes with that budget brand tag, but do not at all regret my decision of buying the beauty from Maruti. Nexa showrooms are unlike the old Maruti showrooms. You receive a warm welcome. Now about the car...getting mileage around 20 average, comfort is great...specially liked the armrest for driver and co-passenger. If you have a budget of around 7.5 lakh, this is the best hatchback to go for.
