Mercedes-Benz has finally launched the new 2017 E-Class sedan in India starting at Rs 56.15 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). The fifth generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class that has arrived in India is the long-wheelbase (LWD) model and India is the first market to get the right-hand-drive (RWD) version of the LWD model. Mercedes-Benz India has launched both the petrol and diesel variants of the car - E200 and E350d, which is priced at Rs 69.47 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Now, we have already driven the 2017 E-Class in India, and also the global model, so we know what the new model has to offer. And in that sense, it is, in fact, a true luxury sedan.
The new E-Class LWB is the longest car in its segment and also the roomiest one. The new model is over 5 metres in length and comes with a wheelbase of 3079 mm and despite its increased length, the car looks proportionate. The E-Class also gets its own signature twin LED daytime running lights that is a major differentiating factor in comparison to the bigger S, or smaller C-Class. The new alloy wheels, electrical ORVMs with integrated turn lights and the LED taillamps further add to the car's elegance and style, Under the hood, the E350d diesel variant gets the familiar 3 litre turbo-diesel engine which churns out 258 bhp and 620 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the petrol version - E200, comes with the 2 litre turbocharged engine which punches out 238 bhp and develops 300 Nm of torque. Both cars will come equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Cabin is classed up by a number of elements especially the premium quality of materials draped inside. A large touch-screen is placed on the top of the central console followed by ac vents and innumerable buttons. Instrument cluster is large allowing clear visibility and leather wrapped steering wheel comes with mounted controls. Driver’s side window too gets a number of buttons. A lavish glove-box is provided on the co-passenger side. The posh seats are covered with leather upholstery. Boot capacity measuring 540 litres offers generous space for storing luggage.
E-Class Engine Specifications & Transmission
Engine set up comprises of three powertrains displacing 1991cc, 2143cc and 2987cc. The 1991cc, in-line, four cylinder petrol engine engenders maximum power of 135 kW at 5500rpm along with 300 Nm between 1200rpm to 4000rpm. While the lower displacing diesel engine propagates 150 kW at 4200rpm along with 500Nm between 1600rpm to 1800rpm. And the 2987cc, V6 engine is capable of developing top power of 195 kW at 3800rpm along with peak torque of 620Nm between 1600rpm to 2400rpm. A 7G TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with ECO start/stop is mated to all three engines.
The saloon features myriad of equipment inside/out. Starting with the exteriors, up front full LED head lamps with adaptive high beam assist are equipped. The large sun roof atop is one of the exquisite features aboard. Rear gets exhaust system with two squared integrated tailpipes. The saloon gets plethora of fitments inside the cabin such as premium ARTICO man made upholstery that matches well the posh wooden trim. Ambient lighting with 5 stage intensity control educes elegance inside. Sun visors feature illuminated mirrors and for rear doors electric sun blind are equipped. Rear compartment comes with a centre arm rest with integrated dual cup holders and storage box. Cruise control with SPEEDTRONIC variable speed limiter, DIRECT CONTROL steering with speed sensitivity, digital display of speedometer/outside temperature and gear mode selection, trip computer in multifunction display, direct select shift paddles etc are some of the other crucial features packed inside.
E-Class Performance & Mileage
Performance on offer is imposing; the top speed for the petrol engine is 233 kmph. Diesel engines achieve pinnacle in terms of speed at around 242 kmph for the 2.2 litre engine and the 3.0 litre motor attains top speed of 250 kmph. Acceleration time from rest to 100 kmph for all three variants is impressive with 3.0 litre diesel engine being the fastest at 6.6 seconds followed by lower displacement diesel motor at 7.5 second while the petrol engine scores least in the race at 7.9 seconds. Mileage isn’t something to look up to but then when you are behind the wheels of a Merc it doesn’t really matter.
E-Class Accessories & Infotainment
From the in-car entertainment section, E-Class flaunts a TFT colour display with 14.7 cm screen diagonal, 6 CD changer, USB, Bluetooth, AUDIO 20 with ergonomic central controller infotainment system, COMMAND online multimedia system with high resolution display TFT technology and 7 inch screen diagonal, DVD, navigation, SD card slot, linguatronic, Harman Kardon logic 7 surround sound system, media interface etc.
E-Class Braking & Handling
Braking set up includes ventilated disc brakes in front and solid disc brakes at rear. Besides, the car also features an electronic stability control, anti-lock-braking system with brake assist, acceleration skid control, adaptive brake with hold function, hill start and brake drying in the wet etc.

Multiple airbags are housed in the cabin like adaptive dual stage front airbags and side impact airbags for driver and co-passenger. Apart from these, the saloon also gets window curtain airbags. 3-point seat belts are provided for driver, front passenger and rear seat passengers. Front seats come with NECK PRO crash sensitive head restraints. Childproofing for door and windows, central locking with interior switch and crash sensor, driver programmable drive away locking for all doors etc are some of the other vital safety equipment available on saloon. Mercedes Benz have also incorporated features like 360 degree camera, intelligent light system, integral safety concept PRE-SAFE,ATTENTION ASSIST and active parking assist including PARTRONIC which aide in driving.
