A fire broke out at the Tata Motors' manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, known for the production of the Nano. 12 fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the fire. Confirming the news, Tata Motors' official spokesperson stated that there have been no casualties reported and the fire has also been brought under control. The fire broke out at the vendor park at M/S Supreme Treves, which is the supplier for trim parts for the Nano, stated the spokesperson.

Located in the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat, the Sanand manufacturing facility was built in 2010 for exclusively producing the Tata Nano small car. The entire facility houses the manufacturing plant spread over 725 acres and the adjacent vendor park is spread over 375 acres.

The Sanand plant's initial production capacity was 2,50,000 cars per year, which is scalable to 3,50,000 units annually. Given the Nano's underwhelming performance in terms of sales, Tata recently commenced production of the newly launched Tiago at the Sanand facility and recently rolled out the 10,000 unit of the hatchback from the plant. The company will go on to produce the Tiago based sub-compact sedan, code named Kite5 at the facility.

This is a second such instance in a month's time when a fire broke out at an automotive manufacturing unit. Few weeks ago, fire broke out at the Subros India at Manesar, which the biggest supplier of air conditioning systems to Maruti Suzuki. The accident forced the largest car maker in the country to shut down production for a day and a half, which resulted in a production loss of 10,000 units.
