Highlights

Despite being the oldest car in its league, Mahindra Scorpio is still the most preferred choice among buyers. Critics started claiming the Scorpio to have lost its charm because of the new entrants like Renault Duster, but the sales number tell a different story. Initially, the Duster outsold all its rivals including the Scorpio, but what really went against Renault's sub-compact SUV was the entry of Nissan Terrano, which is essentially the re-badged version of the car. Ford EcoSport - An urban sub-compact SUV too hammered the sales of the Scorpio initially, but rising waiting period compelled people to look for other options.

If we look at the April sales of the top five SUVs/Crossovers of this segment: Mahindra Scorpio, Nissan Terrano, Renault Duster, Tata Safari+Storme and Ford EcoSport, the Scorpio with 4092 units topped the chart. However, it saw a month-on-month drop of 27% in April 2014. Ford EcoSport which ranks no. 2 here, is the only car in its competition to have reported a month on month growth. As against March 2014's 3904 units, Ford India sold 4013 units of the urban crossover, recording a marginal month-on-month hike of 2.8 percent.

Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano too inspected a month-on-month decline in their sales. While Renault sold 3,153 units of the Duster as against March 2014's 4495 units, Nissan Terrano's sales dropped to 1575 units in April 2014 from 3075 units of March. Tata Motors' flagship SUV Safari failed to lure many buyers in April as well. The company could manage to sell only 748 units of Safari+Storme in the month, which was 1018 in March 2014.
