Highlights

  • The reduction in VAT rate has caused the price cut on the Camry Hybrid
  • The VAT rate has been dropped from 12.5% to 5%
  • The Camry Hybrid will soon face competition from the VW Passat GTE
Toyota Motor India has reduced the price of its popular hybrid sedan - Camry Hybrid in Delhi by a hefty Rs. 2.30 lakh. Effective from 10 May, 2016, the massive drop comes after the reduction of VAT rate, from 12.5% to 5% on electric and hybrid vehicles announced by the government of Delhi. This means that the Camry Hybrid will now be retailed at Rs. 30.90 lakh, instead of its initial price of Rs. 33.20 lakh (both ex-showroom, Delhi).

Toyota isn't the first car maker with a hybrid or electric car to share the benefits of the reduced excise duty with their customers. Recently. country's leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India also slashed prices of the Ciaz SHVS and Ertiga SHVS models by Rs. 69,000 and Rs. 62,000 respectively. This wave of price reduction on hybrid and electric car might not be just limited to Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, considering the Mahindra REVA could join the band wagon soon by reducing the price of the e2o.

The Camry Hybrid features a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an Atkinson cycle hybrid system

That said, one must remember that the reduction in excise duty is only applicable to Delhi, which means prices for the Toyota Camry Hybrid in other cities remains the same. This decision might have a strong influence on car buyers in the nation's capital to opt for Hybrid cars, since the ban on registration of diesel vehicles with 2000cc and above engine capacity is still on. The petrol only Camry though remains unaffected by this rule and the price drop might further increase the sale of the Camry Hybrid sedan further, which is already selling better than the regular petrol version.

Coming to the car itself, the Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a powerful 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that is paired to an electric motor. Together they churn out a maximum of 202bhp of power - 158bhp from the petrol and 44bhp from the electric motor. Transmission duties are handled by a electronically controlled CVT unit. The Camry Hybrid faces limited competition at present in its segment, but will soon be joined by the Volkswagen Passat GTE that was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo earlier this year.
