Land Rover has officially announced plans to offer a Range Rover Evoque Convertible. Previewed by the Evoque Cabrio concept, the production model will become the world's first premium compact SUV convertible when it goes on sale in 2016.

Land Rover had a different take on introducing the car to the world and the video of it testing the prototype is really something. Land Rover didn't have much to say about the model but from the video we can see they really want to keep it hush hush. And that is why we see the prototype being tested 40 meters below the streets of London in a 42km network of Crossrail tunnels, which is the largest engineering project currently undertaken in Europe.

The company says this enabled engineers to drive the crossover in complete privacy with its roof down. The Range Rover Evoque convertible is being tested to make it do everything a Land Rover is famous for. This might be the first and last time a car makes it across the Crossrail tunnel and the Evoque convertible will always have that distinction.

Land Rover plans to launch the car soon but there's no word on specifications but the engine options will likely carryover from the facelifted Evoque
