The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios was launched in India in August 2019, and it’s the third-generation Grand i10 model in India. The car will be built in the company’s Chennai factory and will be exported to other markets as well, and while the petrol version was BS6 compliant right from the time of its launch, diesel model made the transition to BS6 norms from April 2020. Hyundai also offers the Grand i10 in a petrol+CNG version and a turbocharged petrol model, offering a total of four powertrain choices. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is offered in 5 key variants – Era, Magna, Sportz, Turbo, and Asta, that are divided into 14 different iterations based on engine and transmission choices. Including the dual-tone options, the car comes in 9 colour options.

As far as engine options are concerned, the Grand i10 Nios will continue to use the 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2-litre petrol makes 82 bhp and 114 Nm and comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox as also a 5-step AMT as well. The 1.2 litre diesel, which also BS6 compliant now makes 74 bhp and 190 Nm of torque and is similarly mated to a 5-speed manual and an AMT unit. The CNG version which gets the same engine at the pure petrol, offers a reduced output of 68 bhp and 95 Nm of peak torque, while mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. As for the turbo-petrol variant, it comes with a 1.0 litre GDI turbocharged engine that is tuned to make 99 bhp and develops a peak torque of almost 172 Nm. The car comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard.

In terms of looks, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios gets the company’s global design language. You get the cascading grille on which are placed the boomerang shaped DRLs and the top-end models also get LED fog lamps which is a segment first feature. The Grand i10 badge has been given a miss, while the 'Nios' badging now takes prominence on the boot. The X-shaped C-pillar, which was prominently talked about on the European version, gets the 'G i10' moniker on the, along with the X-inspired diamond cut alloy wheels. The images also confirm the chrome door handles, blackened pillars, and the auto folding ORVMs with turn indicators on the top trim.

In terms of dimensions, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is larger than the Grand i10. It’s longer by 40 mm, wider by 20 mm while the wheelbase has been increased by 25 mm. The height, however, is still the same. The interior too gets an overhaul and wears a premium look. The dashboard gets a new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which gets smartphone connectivity. The steering and the AC vents have been borrowed from the Hyundai Venue. There is new ivory-grey fabric upholstery on offer which further ups the premium quotient inside the cabin.

As far as safety goes, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios gets ABS with EBD, Dual airbags, rear parking sensors, driver and passenger seatbelt reminder and pretensioners and speed alert system as standard on the car. In the top-end variants you get features like rear view camera, headlamp escort system, speed sensing door lock and impact sensing door unlock. The car uses 65 per cent of advanced high strength steel (AHSS) in its construction.

Exterior The Grand i10 NIOS is a stylish looking car! No doubt about that. We particularly like the front end where the hexagonal grille is flanked by two boomerang shaped LED daytime running lights, which looks very, very cool in our opinion. Plus, the headlamp cluster, it has been fully redesigned and gets projector headlamps as well. Even though the silhouette remains the same, the car gets a few creases on the bonnet and the profile, adding more character to the looks. Other small design bits such as newly designed alloy wheels, smart looking LED fog lamps, the chrome garnishes all over and the Grand i10 branding on the C pillar, add a sense of freshness to the car. You will not mistake the Grand i10 NIOS for just the Grand i10. Hyundai has made sure of that!

Interior

The interior on the Grand i10 NIOS has been completely updated as well. And for the first time, the company is offering this lovely dual-tone grey colour finish, which looks very upmarket, very premium. The dashboard, it has been completely re-designed as well. It looks very elegant, the materials used, the quality of plastics, it is much better than the Grand i10 and all of this, the cabin, it feels very upmarket. Hyundai has done well to offer a bucket load of features on the Grand i10 NIOS. In fact, the company says, that the NIOS gets 21 new features as compared to the Grand i10. These include a bunch of segment first features such as two USB charging ports, wireless charging for mobile phones and a driver rear-view monitor.

Engine

Ride and Handling

The Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS is basically a city runabout. Its compact dimensions and the small motor are practical and adequate for pottering about in town. There is decent performance on offer and with the linear power delivery and smooth pull, you will not be thrown a surprise. But, in case you want to take it on the highway, you might be left wanting for more as far as power and torque is concerned. The car retains it plush ride quality and dispatches bumps and potholes with ease. Even on bigger undulations, the ride experience is not jarring. The pleasant surprise here is the handling. It goes up by a notch and there is a hint of improvement in the steering feedback over the Grand i10 as well.
