Mahindra has launched the 2018 XUV500 facelift in India with prices starting from Rs. 12.32 lakh. The XUV500 is possibly one of the most popular SUVs currently on sale in India. First launched in 2011, the XUV500 mid-size SUV was introduced as the home-grown automaker’s flagship model in India. Over the years, the SUV has garnered a lot of accolades and popularity among enthusiasts and critics alike for its bold design and expansive feature list. The XUV500 received its mid-life update in 2015, which further increased the premium quotient of the SUV. Very stylish, loaded with features and a powerful and capable engine makes the Mahindra XUV500 a good package for those who seek a premium and robust SUV under the Rs. 20 lakh mark. The XUV500 also comes with an efficient automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system along with a host of comfort and safety features.
2018 XUV500 Facelift Exterior
The Mahindra XUV500 is also pretty big in size with dimensions measuring 4585 mm in length, 1890 mm in width and 1785 mm in height. And the size is complimented by other styling bits like the tooth-shaped chrome grille up front, projector lamps with LED daytime running light, plastic underbody cladding with faux skid plate. The profile of the SUV large flared wheel arches that accommodate 17-inch alloy wheels from the W8 variant and above, while the lower variants get steel wheels with full wheel cap. The outside rear-view mirror comes with integrated turn signal lights and the SUV also gets black plastic side skirts. The uniquely designed window frame extends until the C-pillar and rear gets the vertically mounted tail lamps. There also a well-sculpted tailgate and a plastic cladded rear bumper that houses dual exhaust pipes.
The cabin of the Mahindra XUV500 is equally stylish and well-equipped. The 2700 mm wheel base offers a huge amount of space which, in fact, makes a very comfortable 7-seater SUV. XUV500 Performance & Mileage
Drive quality is good and makes XUV500 a favourable car to be driven within the city and across long stretches, especially the automatic trim which has been well-calibrated and offers a punchy drive. The NVH levels have improved compared to the previous models but being a diesel engine you do hear that evident grunt of the motor which is common in all Mahindra models. It is a constant issue in both manual and automatic versions. Mahindra has worked in improving the fuel economy of the XUV500 and the SUV returns an ARAI claimed mileage of 16 kmpl.
|Ground Clearance||200 mm|
|Fuel Tank||70 Litres|

XUV500 Braking & Handling
Braking force is provided by disc brakes at front and rear. Anti -lock-braking system along with electronic brakeforce distribution further strengthens the braking action. Handling is decent but steering isn’t as sharp as some of the rivals in the segment. The automatic transmission is more responsive and handles better.
Mahindra XUV500 Competition
The Mahindra XUV500 might be the flagship model but it’s been a long time since the SUV has received any mentionable upgrade. In the meantime, competitors have come out with several rivals for the XUV500 which include, the Tata Hexa and the Toyota Innova Crysta, despite the latter being an MPV. Among the upcoming models that will be launched in India this year we have the Renault Kaptur and even the Jeep Compass.

Exterior The facelift of the Mahindra XUV500 sees a big transformation and you get a new front grille, which looks different from any of the Mahindra cars that we've seen in the past. There's a thick chrome surround and studded detailing, which looks good on the car, but that, of course, is a subjective matter. There are LED DRL's too and the headlamps have been re-profiled. In fact, there's a bit of chrome detailing on the car, which really makes it stand out. The front bumper too receives an update and new fog lamp housings as well. There's also a dual-tone faux skid plate, which makes its way onto the car, but will only be available on the top-end variant; as are the chrome elements on the door sills. The top-spec model also gets 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels (the outgoing model had 17-inch wheels), which enhance the stance of the car and give it a bolder look. The changes do not end there because, if you remember, we said that the facelift was a comprehensive update.
The XUV500 comes with dual tone interiors and the top-spec model, which I got to drive, came with tan coloured leather seats, which further enhance the look and feel of the XUV500, making it more premium than before. The centre console too gets a piano black treatment, with chrome inserts and it all matches the opulence that the SUV now oozes. Another interesting touch is the use of faux-leather, on the dashboard and the doors, giving it a soft touch feel and adding to the enhancements made to the car.
The XUV500 facelift will be made available in the 2.2-litre diesel. The XUV500 will no longer be available in the 140 horses churning avatar; in fact, the engine has been uprated to produce 153 bhp. What's also new is that the engine gets a new sixth-gen turbocharger, along with a new 'eVGT' technology that works according to the ECU signals and acceleration. The 360 Nm of torque kicks in as early as 1800 rpm making the XUV500 an extremely fun thing to drive. It's eager and raring to go and that's what you want an SUV to be like.
Ride and Handling
The engine reacts swiftly to your inputs though and that keeps a smile on your face. There's a bit of roll too and the facelift doesn't drive any differently than the outgoing model. We've driven it on a test track, with a smooth tarmac and concrete road, so how it behaves off the beaten track remains to be seen, but the ride is a comfortable one. Other things remain unchanged, like the understeer in the bends and the vertical movement from the suspension, which were always lined up in the negative table of the XUV500.
Pros & Cons of एक्सयूवी500
Looks better than before. Facelift ups the premium quotient
Seats are well bolstered
More power available on the diesel
There's a hint of body roll
Low on power at lower rpms
Understeers when you take a corner
Final Verdict on एक्सयूवी500
Mahindra is offering some new colours on the XUV500 - Crimson Red and Mystic copper, both of which we did not get to see; but the Crimson Red looked promising on the presentation board. Mahindra will hope the refresh brings its customer base back into M&M showrooms and more importantly, back to driving the once popular XUV500.
