Renault Triber Price

Renault has finally launched the Triber in India at a starting price of Rs. 4.95 which goes all the way up to Rs. 6.49 lakh (all prices ex-showroom,India). The car will be available in 4 variants, RXE, RXL, RXT, RXZ. The Triber is essentially a sub-four meter MPV based on a modified version of the CMF-A platform which also spawns the Kwid, but the French carmaker claims to have upgraded it with as much as 90 per cent new components in a bid to make it more spacious and refined. The idea here is to come up with an alternative for buyers who want a more versatile product at the price of a hatchback.

Interior

The Triber is a seven-seater MPV with detachable mechanism for the last row seats which allows you to remove them completely and make way for more luggage. You get two individual seats in the third row so you can take just one when six are on board or both seats when fewer people are travelling. And the third row can also be used by adults for a short commute, thanks to the floor depth. The boot space is limited to 84 litres when all seats are in use while it can be expanded to 625 litres.

On the inside, the Triber has a minimalist cabin with less buttons and switches. The dual-tone interiors are finished in beige and grey colours which go well together and the dashboard gets a symmetrical design and features trapezoidal air-con vents. The black and beige seat upholstery contrasts with the cabin and both second and third row get dedicated air-con vents. However, what makes the cabin even more desirable and adequate for seven passengers are the wide window frames which do not let the occupants feel hemmed in. The second row can also be adjusted and reclined to make space for passengers in the last row.

The Renault Triber is pretty well loaded and gets features like an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, Auto climate control, tilt-steering adjust, seat height adjust, MID display, four-door power windows, powered ORVMs and rear defogger among others.

Engine

The Renault Triber tips the scale at 947 kg and gets the Kwid-sourced 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine that in the Triber puts out 71 bhp and 96 Nm of peak torque. However, the rev range is higher at 6250 rpm and even the peak torque range tops at 3500 rpm. It is mated to a five-speed manual transmission as standard.

The Renault Triber has been a runaway success for French carmaker in India. The company’s first subcompact MPV was good-looking, offered descent features, and most of all very practical for someone looking for a family car on a budget. While initially the Triber came with just a petrol engine with a manual gearbox as standard, earlier in August 2020, the company added an AMT (automated manual transmission) option to the line-up. The Renault Triber is a quintessential people mover! Compact, smart, spacious and very practical, it is easy to see why the Triber is doing well for Renault!

Design

In terms of looks, the Renault Triber gets a handsome European design, featuring a compact yet balanced proportions. The chrome accented grille with projector headlamps give it its premium touches, while the underbody cladding, roof rails, and faux skid plates show its rugged style. It’s built on an evolved version of the Kwid’s platform, called the CMF-A+ architecture, so you’ll see a similar silhouette. The MPV comes with a set of 16-inch wheels that are design to look like alloys but are more similar to steel wheels with hub caps. At the rear, the Triber comes with stylish wraparound split taillamps, large tailgate and bumper cladding.

Cabin

The interior too stays nice and airy, offering lots of space and large windows. One of the biggest draws on the Triber is that it offers multiple seating configurations, facilitated by its modular third row that’s called EasyFix. You could remove the rear seats completely and create more space for luggage and fold down the middle row seats for even more storage space. This makes the Triber versatile and practical. In fact, Renault claims that the modular third row allows you to have over 100 different seating configurations. The MPV also comes with features like cooled glovebox, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and rear AC.

Driving Experience

Renault calls it the 'Energy Engine' - one it uses on several global products like its bestselling Clio. The 999 cc, 3-cylinder motor is tuned to make 71 bhp at a very high 6250 rpm, and 96 Nm of peak torque. Now while peak torque comes in at 3500 rpm, the engine also delivers 80 per cent of its torque at 2000 rpm - giving you a good band for city driving in particular. The engine is actually surprisingly peppy, and does make a lot of noise as it gets going - typical of a 3 pot. Sound insulation is very good though, so the minute you put your windows up, you cannot hear it as much and so it won't bother you. The engine is not powerful, but neither is it sluggish. See what Renault is going for here is to offer an engine that does the job - and that it does - ably and comfortably. The 5-speed manual gearbox is good, but under 3000 rpm, you will find it gives out a bit. In traffic, undershifting is necessary at lower speeds, and so an automatic is definitely going to be a boon. In which case you could go for the AMT version or Easy-R as it is called, which is also a 5-speed unit. Here, the gearshifts themselves are very smooth, but the process itself is a little slow and while it may not seem to be much of a problem when you are driving at regular city speeds, but in case you need to overtake a slower moving vehicle, you will need to plan that manoeuvre. Another piece of good news is that you can shift gears using the manual mode as well, in case you need to make a quick getaway.

Safety

While the car does alright on safety, in terms of basic equipment and build quality, it could have been better. Seatbelts for the middle second row passenger and the third row are less than ideal. The passenger sitting in the middle in the second row will have to do with just a two point hip seatbelt and the seatbelts on the third row do not get pretensioners. Renault is also not offering ISOFIX child seat mounts, even as an option, which is a big miss considering the Triber is likely to attract a lot of family car buyers. Dual front airbags are standard though, and the RXZ gets additional side front airbags too.

Price

The Renault Triber comes in four key variants – RXE, RXL, RXT and RXZ and the latter three also get AMT versions. The prices start at Rs. 5.12 lakh and goes up to Rs. 7.34 lakh (ex-showroo, Delhi) and that’s quite competitive. There’s no direct rival to the Triber, but the Datsun Go+ is perhaps the closest competitor and prices for that range from Rs. 4.20 lakh to Rs. 6.90 lakh.

Verdict

The Renault Triber is a unique animal - with no true rival. It has USPs many of you may not think you need - but actually do. And so while it may not seem like an appealing enough car at the start, it's the kind I suspect that will grow on you. It is practical, cavernously roomy, and yet has quick cooling cabin, it's efficient; and while the engine is no fire starter, it certainly is not underpowered. And so given the prices, the Triber is a fantastic package, and a welcome addition to the Indian hatchback segment and the overall car bazaar - one that may compel competition to relook at their hatchback strategies.
