The Tata Harrier has been launched in India at a starting price of 12.69 lakh for the base XE variant which goes all the way up to 16.25 lakh for the top-end XZ variant. Tata will be offering the Harrier in India in four variants, prices of which are below. Tata Harrier is based on the OMEGA platform which is a derivative of Land Rover's D8 platform which underpinned the Freelander 2 and was modified for the Discovery Sport. Besides that, the Harrier also debuts Tata's new IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy and stands true to the H5X concept which was unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo. The Harrier is not only larger in dimensions than its key rivals- the Nissan Kicks and Hyundai Creta, but also has the largest footprint in its segment. The first thing which is an instant takeaway for the Harrier is the design. The Tata Harrier is an urban SUV and the design justifies that to its best. Up front, it looks butch having a high hood-line and housing a wide grille with LED Daytime running lamps at corners and the projector headlamps have been positioned just below them. The side profile of the Harrier too looks flamboyant thanks to the exaggerated wheel arches and bold claddings and the rear profile complements the overall design with embodying sharp creases on the tailgate as well as the taillamps along with bold elements such as wide claddings.

The large footprint of the Tata Harrier translates into a spacious cabin. Now what adds to the package is the quality of materials and finish of the cabin. Everything from the oak wood palette used on the dash and grab handles to the soft touch upholstery feel plush and better than its class. Aesthetically the cabin of the Harrier too looks alluring and uncluttered, be it the wraparound dash with a binnacle line running the width of the cabin or the 8.8-inch floating touchscreen which is high on functionality and eliminates many buttons. The Tata Harrier at 425 litres has the biggest boot space too of them all with all seats up which can be further expanded to 800 litres.

The Tata Harrier is laden with all the segment standard features on the outside as well as on the inside. Features like LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), HID Xenon headlamps, height-adjustable driver's seat and keyless entry are standard from the base XE variant while the top-end XZ variant is equipped with terrain drive modes, auto climate control, engine start-stop, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports smartphone connectivity and is linked to JBL sourced surround sound system with nine speakers and an amplifier, logo projection on the outer mirrors and more. Moreover, safety features like dual airbags and ABS with EBD are standard across variants while the top-end variant also gets features like electronic stability control (ESC), mitigation control, hill assist and brake assist. The Tata Harrier is powered by the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that Tata claims is built on the low friction valve train architecture for better refinement and efficiency. This engine churns out 138 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Tata Motors is also planning to add an automatic variant at a later date and will be sourcing the automatic gearbox from Hyundai. Like the Hexa, even the Harrier gets multi-drive modes which are coupled with a terrain response system.

The Tata Harrier came with many firsts for the home-grown automaker in India. It was the first 5-seater compact SUV from the carmaker, the first SUV to be built on the company's new OMEGA platform, and the first SUV to employ Tata Motors Impact 2.0 design philosophy. However, it lacked few premium creature comforts that its rivals were already offering, and it was launched with only a diesel-manual option. After a year in the market the company finally decided to change things and earlier this year, along with an updated BS6 compliant engine, the Harrier also got an automatic option and few new premium features.

Design

The Tata Harrier sticks to its original IMPACT 2.0 design which is good as that macho appeal with curvaceous proportions has been well acclaimed. That said, there is a fresh aura around it because of this new dual-tone Calypso Red paint with gloss black roof. In fact, the entire body colour range has been updated and there are now five colours to choose from- Cocoa Sparkle, Tolesto Grey, Black Dark Edition, Orcus White and of course this Calypso Red. The chrome around the headlamps and DRLs along with the grille and the new 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels add a touch of premium-ness to the SUV.

Cabin

The cabin is a little low-slung, somewhat sporty and the floating roof effect is a cool touch. This bold chrome finishes really adds to the look too and is not exaggerated. There's also a lot of cladding at the base of the doors, while the exaggerated wheel arches give it a butch look and add mass to the SUV. The BS6 model added some new features to the mix like a panoramic sunroof, along with a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat and auto-dimming rearview mirror. There is also an AdBlue solution gauge on the instrument panel right under the rev counter. Of course, there's the 8.8-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Connectivity system, auto climate control and a 9-speaker JBL sound system. There's still no connected car tech on it though. We've seen it on the Nexon EV from the company and not having it in the Harrier where almost the majority of rivals are offering, is a big miss in our opinion.

Driving Experience

Under the hood, there's still the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine which is now BS6 compliant. At 168 bhp it belts out about 30 bhp more while the torque remains the same at 350 Nm. It's mated to a brand new 6-speed automatic transmission sourced from Hyundai and that will be our main focus for this drive. The 350 nm of torque kicks into this turbocharged unit at just about 1800 rpm and the low-end torque provides a linear power delivery. It has a strong mid-range too. There's only a 6-speed manual on offer and there's no automatic for the time being. The gear shifts with ease but it takes a bit of effort to slot them in place. Movement from 2 to 3rd and back is where you feel a bit of jerk. The clutch is nice and light, but the travel is quite a lot and not great in traffic conditions.

On the other hand, the automatic version feels a bit friskier in the way it delivers the power when you compare it to the manual transmission. There is just a bit of hesitation when you kick down, after which it takes off and power build-up is right up to 3800 rpm, offering a good mid-range. There is ample torque at the low end too kicking in at just below 1800 rpm. While the top end has improved marginally with that slight upsurge in power output, it is still not fond of being revved hard. The Harrier impresses with its supple ride quality as well. The suspension soaks up bumps quite well and as it's a big car and there's a hint of body roll when cornering at high speeds but still it's not unnerving.

Safety

There are enough electronics on-board ensuring stability. Standard features include Traction Control, Rollover Mitigation, Electronic Stability Program and Corner Stability Control among others. Though the brakes feel spongy and we hoped it had a better bite to it. While ABS with EBD and dual airbags remain standard, in higher variants you also get six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, Terrain response modes, off-road ABS and more.

Price

The Tata Harries is offered in six key variants - XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ, and XZ+ and additionally, you get automatic options for XM, XZ and XZ+ trims along with special edition and dual-tone models that cumulatively offer up to 25 different trims to choose from. All these trims are priced between Rs. 13.84 lakh to Rs. 20.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). At this price it's base trim is over Rs. 1 lakh more expensive than its closest rival the MG Hector, while the top-end trim is almost Rs. 2.2 lakh more expensive. In fact, compared to the Hector offers more features, gets multiple powertrain choices, over the Harrier's diesel-only strategy, and it also gets a connected car system. The Harrier is also substantially more expensive than the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Verdict

While the Tata Harrier is quite a capable SUV, compared to its current rivals, it doesn’t seem to offer enough value. Yes, with the BS6 update you now get a panoramic sunroof, 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat and auto-dimming rearview mirror, but right now, it might feel too little, too late. However, if you are looking for a solid SUV with a powerful engine, along with impressive road presence and decent creature comforts the Harrier makes for a worthy choice. Otherwise, you can do for the Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos that offer great value, or spend a little more the get the Jeep Compass that also get 4x4 as an option along with a petrol engine.
