Nitin Gadkari, the union minister for Road Transport and Highways, recently said that he wants to create "value from waste". To that effect, the minister is planning run buses, trucks, and cars in different cities on green hydrogen - hydrogen that is generated entirely by renewable energy like wastewater. In fact, in order to prove the plausibility of using green hydrogen, extracted from wastewater, to run vehicles, Gadkari says he's bought a pilot project car that would run on green hydrogen produced in an oil research institute in Faridabad.

The announcement was made by Nitin Gadkari during the sixth National Summit on Financial Inclusion. Speaking at the event, the minister said, "I have a plan to run buses, trucks and cars on green hydrogen that would be produced using sewage water and solid waste in cities." He further added, "I am trying to create value from waste."

Gadkari says that he wants to "make people believe" that vehicles can ply on hydrogen extracted from wastewater. The minister said, "I have bought a pilot project car that would run on green hydrogen produced in an oil research institute in Faridabad. I would take a ride of the city to make people believe."

Earlier this year in September 2021, Nitin Gadkari also announced that he plans to make flex engines that can run on more than one fuel mandatory in India. The Minister had been requesting automakers in India to switch to or incorporate natural gas alternatives like methanol and ethanol among others which are comparatively less polluting. Back then Gadkari had said that the order mandating all vehicle manufacturers to power vehicles with flex engines will come in the next 3-4 months.
