Volkswagen Confirms New Sub-4-Metre SUV For India; Launch In 2027

- The SUV will be under 4 metres in length
- It will be based on Volkswagen’s MQB-A0-IN platform
- Expected to share powertrain options with the Skoda Kylaq
Volkswagen India has officially announced plans to launch a new sub-4-metre SUV in India next year. It will possibly be the brand’s most accessible SUV in the country. The SUV will be based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which was developed specifically for India. The company says it will focus on safety, localisation, technology and market-specific requirements.

Expected To Share Underpinnings With Skoda Kylaq
Ever since the Volkswagen Polo was discontinued in India, the brand has been missing from the sub-4-metre segment. This space will now be filled by the upcoming SUV. The SUV is expected to be a sister model to the Skoda Kylaq, with VW confirming it will sit on the MQB A0 IN platform. The new VW SUV is also expected to share the same powertrains as the Kylaq, though adopting a design in line with VW's current crop of SUVs.

Under the hood, expect the SVU to get the same 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol mill as its Skoda sibling, with both manual and automatic gearbox options to be offered. The VW, however, could arrive with the new 8-speed automatic gearbox instead of the 6-speed offered in the Kylaq currently. Skoda and VW have been gradually phasing out the 6-speed torque converter in their range of India 2.0 cars, so the same could also occur in the sub-compact segment. We expect the new Volkswagen SUV to be priced from around Rs 8-9 lakh, similar to the Skoda Kylaq.

India Launch In 2027
VW has stated that the new SUV will be designed and developed in India, with a launch confirmed for 2027. The all-new SUV will join a heavily contested subcompact SUV segment, which has been witnessing strong demand over the past years given the customer preference leaning towards SUVs. It will go up against popular models such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and the Mahindra XUV 3XO.
