Volkswagen Tukan Pickup Truck Unveiled In Brazil

- Volkswagen Tukan is the brand’s new pickup for Brazil and South America
- Offered in single-cab and double-cab versions
- First Volkswagen pickup to use the MQB platform
Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the Tukan, a new pickup truck developed specifically for Brazil and South America. The new model marks the first time Volkswagen is using its MQB platform for a pickup. The Tukan has been revealed in two forms. The double-cab version is shown in the top-spec Extreme trim, finished in Canary Yellow, while the single-cab model makes its debut in the entry-level Robust trim, aimed squarely at commercial users.

Volkswagen says the Tukan has been designed, developed and will be built entirely in Brazil. Production will take place at the company's plant in Sao Jose dos Pinhais, Parana, with the pickup slated to launch in the Brazilian market in the first half of 2027. Around 76 per cent of its components will be sourced locally, stated the brad.
The double-cab Tukan is designed for private buyers as a lifestyle compact truck, while the single-cab version puts emphasis on carrying capacity and work-related use. The latter has a shorter cabin and longer cargo bed.

Volkswagen says the cargo bed has been designed around different types of use and will be supported by a range of accessories. The pickup will also feature an integrated toolbox and a cargo area designed to accommodate pallets of different sizes. Despite the different body styles, both versions share the same basic design language.
While the Tukan uses architecture related to the T-Cross, Volkswagen has given the pickup its own identity. The front gets a tall, upright treatment, with LED headlamps positioned higher up and a more prominent black section around the lower part of the bumper.

The sides feature pronounced wheel arches and a higher waistline, with several lines converging towards the centre of the body. The Tukan also gets substantial protective elements around the lower body. At the rear, the LED tail-lamps, tailgate and bumper form a single visual composition. The double-cab version gets a black element connecting the tail-lamps, while the single-cab model does without it.
The Tukan is the first Volkswagen pickup based on the MQB platform, but the architecture has been modified substantially for its new role. One of the changes is the addition of leaf-spring rear suspension, developed specifically for the pickup. Volkswagen says the setup is intended for load-carrying ability and durability. The wheelbase has also been extended compared with the vehicle that forms the basis of the architecture.
The company says the Tukan has already completed more than two million kilometres of testing, including evaluations carried out with customers using the pickup in real-world conditions.
Volkswagen has not revealed the final engine and transmission specifications for the Tukan yet. The pickup is, however, expected to use a mild-hybrid version of Volkswagen's 1.5-litre four-cylinder TSI turbo-petrol engine. More details on the powertrain and other specifications are expected in the coming months.
