The MG Gloster is the new flagship SUV from Morris Garages India, and also its more technologically-equipped product in the country. The Gloster gets a range of segment-first creature comforts and safety features and it also comes with Level 1 autonomous technology.
The MG Gloster was first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo in India. The SUV is essentially a rebadged Maxus D90 that is sold by MG Motor India's parent company SAIC Motor in China. However the Gloster will come with several India-specific features.
Visually, the new MG Gloster SUV comes with a massive chrome grille up front, which is flanked by wraparound headlamps featuring full LED headlamps, and integrated LED DRLs. The SUV also comes with LED foglamps with C-shaped Chrome inserts and a chrome bumper lip as well.
As you can see, the MG Gloster is huge. How huge? Well, the SUV is almost 5 metres long, close to 2 metres wide and about 2 metres tall as well. So road presence will never be your concern. The wheelbase itself is almost 3 metres long, which means, the SUV has enough space for a third row as well.
At the back, the Gloster comes with large wraparound taillamps connected by a chrome strip, and large 'Gloster' lettering in the tailgate. The muscular bumper comes with heavy cladding with glossy black diffuser and chrome-tipped twin tailpipes at either ends.
The new Gloster comes with a well-equipped dual tone, black and brown cabin draped in soft-touch leather with contrast white stitching. The dashboard features a multi-functional flat-bottom steering wheel with an 8-inch instrument cluster, and a segment first 12.3-inch infotainment screen with MG iSmart connected car technology.
The centre console offers access to the gear lever for the automatic transmission along with the drive mode dial, which offers up to 7 drive modes, including - Rock, Sand, Mud, and Snow. You also get a wireless phone charger, and buttons for other in-car controls.
Additionally, the MG Gloster will also come with other smart features like - 360-degree camera, a 12 speakers sound system, and 64-ambient lighting feature, tyre pressure monitoring system.
The MG Gloster also gets Level 1 autonomous ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), autonomous emergency braking, auto park assist, adaptive cruise control system, lane departure warning, and collision avoidance system (CAS).
The MG Gloster comes with a 2.0-litre twin turbo diesel engine that makes about 215 bhp and a monstrous 480 Nm of peak torque. There is an 8-speed automatic transmission which is standard and along with that, this also gets a Borg Warner four by four system with 7 driving modes.
The new flagship SUV will also get a five-link integral rear suspension, along with a separate rear differential lock button with Borg Warner transfer case.
Up on launch, the MG Gloster will compete with the likes of the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, and Mahindra Alturas G4, but given the premium offerings, the SUV is likely to be priced much higher, closer to Rs. 40 lakh (ex-showroom).
