Next Generation Mahindra Thar Review
The new generation Mahindra Thar SUV made its India debut on the 74th Independence Day. The off-roader SUV will go on sale in the country on October 2, 2020. The carmaker is already accepting bookings for the all-new Thar.
The second-generation Mahindra Thar SUV retains its iconic design. It is bolder, stylish and more appealing than the predecessor. There's a new grille up front which is flanked by classic round headlamps and LED DRLs. It also sports purpose-built bumpers, new LED taillights, new alloy wheels, front fog lamps and more.
The SUV comes in both soft-top and hard-top options, something not seen in the past from Mahindra. The SUV is built on a new body-on-frame platform, making it significantly bigger than the outgoing version.
The new generation Thar now comes in six colours - Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Galaxy Grey, Napoli Black, Rocky Beige and Aquamarine. The Mystic Copper and Galaxy Grey are the two new shades added in the palette.
The new Thar will be offered in two series AX series & LX series. The AX series is an off-road-focused offering that comes with a choice of petrol and diesel engine, paired to a manual gearbox only. The LX series gets a diesel engine with a manual and an automatic transmission. The LX series petrol variant will get an automatic transmission only.
The SUV is based on carmaker's third-generation body-on-ladder platform that gives it a much wider track and a longer wheelbase for a solid stance. The boxy silhouette does keep the Thar DNA intact. It has a water wading ability of 650 mm with and as already mentioned, an unladen ground clearance of 226 mm, which will differ in the variants equipped with 16-inch wheels.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar off-roader SUV retains its classic design. Upfront, the new Thar now sports a newly designed grille, new LED daytime running lamps, taller hood, cladded trapezoidal front wheel arches, and a new faux skid plate.
One of the Mahindra Thar's USPs has been its accessibility, which very much remains a part of the equation with the new generation model. It is immensely better with respect to NVH levels, high-speed stability and refined new engines.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will come with a choice of petrol and diesel engines for the first time ever. Apart from the 2.2-litre diesel engine, there is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that makes 150 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter on the SUV. The model will also get permanent 4x4 with a rear differential lock.
