Maruti Suzuki India has sold over 45 lakh units of the Alto entry-level hatchback in India. It’s one of the most popular cars sold in India.
The Alto is one of the longest-running nameplates in Indian auto industry. First launched in the year 2000, Maruti has been selling the Alto for about 23 years.
The Longest-Running Nameplate
Over the years we have seen several iterations of the Alto (Alto, Alto 800, Alto K10) and different powertrain choices (800 cc and 1.0 litre), including petrol and CNG options. Currently, we only get the Alto K10.
Different Names One Car
The Alto was launched in 2000, followed by Alto K10 in 2010, while the 20 lakh milestone was crossed in 2012. Over 30 lakh Altos were sold by 2016, and another 10 lakh units by 2020. The remaining 5 lakh units were sold over the next 3 years.
The Timeline
In 2022, Maruti Suzuki launched the new-gen Alto K10, which is currently the only Alto on sale in India. Right now, the car is priced between ₹ 3.99 lakh and ₹ 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
