The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has doubled parking charges at all municipal car parks in the national capital. Here’s why.
The NDMC is trying to discourage the use of personal transport vehicles amidst the rising air pollution levels in the city.
The double fee applies to all car and two-wheeler parking sites managed by the NDMC except for on-street parking sites and holders of monthly passes.
Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) has dropped to very poor levels between 300-400, prompting the government to implement the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 2.
Under GRAP Stage 2, Delhi will see restrictions imposed on coal and wood burning and the use of diesel generators. The higher parking charges will be in effect till the GRAP Stage 2 remains implemented.
The Delhi government may start restricting vehicles on the road if the AQI crosses the 400 mark under GRAP Stage 3.
