Toyota India has inaugurated a new engine production plant at Jigani Industrial Area, near Bangalore under its new joint venture Toyota Industries Engine India (TIEI).

Toyota India has inaugurated a new engine production plant at Jigani Industrial Area, near Bangalore under its new joint venture Toyota Industries Engine India (TIEI). The JV between Toyota Motor Corporation and Kirloskar Systems, has been initiated to produce engines in India, with the new pant producing the automaker's new and improved Global Diesel (GD) family of engines that power the new generation Innova Crysta.

Spread across 22 acres, the new facility has been built with an investment of Rs. 1100 crore and is Toyota first GD engine plant in India and third globally. The new 2.4-litre diesel engine is claimed to be 13 per cent more fuel efficient and 47 per cent more powerful and are equipped with Economy with Superior Thermal Efficiency Combustion (ESTEC) technology that contributes to enhanced fuel efficiency. Similarly, the 2.8-litre diesel engine is 71 per cent more powerful and 7 per cent more fuel efficient, in comparison to the earlier used 2KD engine.

Construction of Toyota's new engine plant started in November 2015, while production at the facility commenced in March this year. The plant that currently employs 1200 personnel has an annual engine production capacity of 1,08,000 units for the 1GD-FTV 2.8 litre & 2GD-FTV - 2.4 litre oil burners that are currently BS4 compatible. The company states that the engines have the provision to be upgrade to BS5 and BS6 norms, as and when required.

Both The 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre oil burners are equipped with manual and automatic transmissions on the Toyota Innova Crysta. The new generation MPV has witnessed highly impressive sales since its launch in May this year clocking over 7000 units during its first month of sales. The local production of the diesel engine not only helps the company achieve higher localisation, but will also gain improved economies of scale. The engines will also power the next generation Fortuner in India, when it goes on sale next year.
