In a bid to leverage its manufacturing presence in Asia, Volvo Buses today announced plans to use India as an export hub for developed markets like Europe.

In a bid to leverage its manufacturing presence in Asia, Volvo Buses today announced plans to use India as an export hub for developed markets like Europe. As a part of this initiative, the first bus made at the company's facility in India will be unveiled later this year in Europe. Deliveries will start only next year. That said, the company's Asia Leverage strategy also utilise its manufacturing presence in China to cater to its other international markets. Present in India since 2001, Volvo Buses setup a manufacturing plant in the country in 2008 in Hosakote near Bangalore. Currently over 5,000 Volvo buses operate on Indian roads. Under the Asia leverage program, Volvo Buses' investment in India and its facility here includes a new paint shop, warehouse, a training and R&D center, and a new test track. Interestingly, Volvo is the first company to export buses to Europe from India. Akash Passey, Senior Vice President - Business Region International, Volvo Buses, said, "Over the years, we have built, nurtured, and advanced local competence in critical areas such as product development, manufacturing techniques, and engineering skills with the view to address demands of export markets. Export to Europe confirms the expertise we have developed in our Indian facility. We are actively exploring opportunities to supply to new markets and in the long term we aim to enhance the role of India in our export plans."
