Highlights

  • The Model Y will go into production by 2019
  • The Model Y will be Tesla's first compact crossover
  • The Model Y will be based on an all-new platform
We've known for a long time now that Tesla has been working on a new model and it gave people a glance into what is in store at the company's 2017 Annual Shareholder Meeting at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. The Model Y will mark Tesla's entry into the compact crossover segment. It's basically will be a smaller version of the existing Model X. We've seen Tesla adopt this strategy with the Model 3, as it's a smaller version of the Model S.

Originally, the company had planned to build the Model Y on the same platform as the Model 3, but Elon Musk announced that there's an all-new platform which has been developed for the Model Y. The car will be ready for production by 2019-2020, but Musk has already said a lot about the company wanting to get the Model Y on roads by 2019 itself and that according to us is an ambitious plan.

The teaser image that has been showed here, reveals nothing exceptional and it appears that the Model Y will take inspiration, especially in terms of design from the Model 3. Musk also said at the shareholder meeting today that he expects the Model Y to be more popular than the Model 3, and that would prove to be true considering the attention the compact crossover segment has been getting. Tesla is also looking to build a new factory, according to Musk, to support the production of the Model Y.

Considering the popularity of SUVs and compact crossovers in India, it won't be a bad idea for this market as well. By 2020, we hope that the company will set foot on Indian shores, as there has been a significant debate on that front. Elon Musk had earlier said that Tesla will set foot in India by the end of 2017 and it was recently that he yet again drew a dark cloud on that plan, but with people like Anand Mahindra sending out welcome vibes to Musk, to set shop in India, we hope to see the company and its cars in India soon.
