New Mandatory Standards Incoming For EV Batteries

Highlights
- The new norms are likely to come into effect in two-three months.
- The requirements and testing protocols will likely be notified
- Government will notify the norms for 'conformity of production (CoP)' of batteries.
Government is working on new necessary requirements for battery parts and their testing, together with cells of Electric Vehicles (EVs). The new norms are likely to come into effect in two-three months. According to a TOI report, Minister of Road, Transport and Highways- Nitin Gadkari said that the availability on penalty in opposition to corporations failing to adjust to the requirements and regulatory norms will kick in solely after these are notified. "We should not penalise the manufacturers before notifying the updates norms," Gadkari said.
According to the report, the requirements and testing protocols will likely be notified concurrently for each two- and four-wheeler EVs. The authorities will even make it mandatory for car manufacturers to promote EVs only using standard-compliant batteries. The report also states that officials mentioned the federal government will notify the norms for 'conformity of production (CoP)' of batteries, which suggests random samples of completed batteries will likely be picked up from factories for testing. The test will be conducted to check whether the businesses are complying with the requirements, whereas going for mass manufacturing of EV fashions. At present, there isn't a provision of CoP for EVs.
That said, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) does have safety rating for battery packs, but there is no official norm regarding its compulsion. AIS 156 rating by ARAI makes states the battery pack one of the safest in India. All safety and electrical tests, such as battery pack overcharge, over-discharge, fire resistance, short circuit, mechanical and thermal shock, vibration and drop test, are performed at ARAI in accordance with the AIS 156 Standard.
