Highlights

  • The new company will be part of the Rimac Group
  • Mate Rimac will be the CEO of this business unit
  • It is a continuation of its EV components business

The Rimac Group has now become fully operational as the umbrella company which is also the parent of the audacious hypercar maker Bugatti-Rimac after the two joined forces last year. As a part of the new structure, there is also a new Rimac technologies business which is 100 percent owned by the Rimac group, while Bugatti Rimac is owned 55 percent by Rimac Group and 45 percent by Porsche.

Rimac has cut its teeth supplying EV powertrains and batteries for brands like Porsche, Hyundai, Kia, Aston Martin, Pininfarina, and even Koenigsegg. Rimac Technology is a continuation of that same business but now has been split into a new business unit. As a part of this, it will supply high-performance battery systems, electric drive units, electronics systems, and user interface components to third-party OEMs as this has been its most profitable business unit. The company will also offer engineering, development, and production services.

"Having delivered components for several niche volume projects in the past years, Rimac Technology is ramping up its production capacity and will be manufacturing tens of thousands high-performance systems per year by 2024 and further ramping up to volumes of hundreds of thousands with products ranging from small hybrid battery systems to full rolling chassis," Rimac said in a statement.

A new Bugatti Rimac HQ is under construction already

Mate Rimac, the founder of Rimac Automobili will remain CEO of this new business unit like he is the CEO of the entire group and the Bugatti-Rimac joint venture. "We are working on projects where we are producing batteries in tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of units per year for big car companies. It's not just batteries, but also powertrains, e-axles, infotainment systems, and stuff like that," he said.

Rimac Technology has over 1,000 employees and is free from any oversight by any other manufacturer, however, Mate Rimac did add that it would maintain a close collaboration with Bugatti-Rimac as a testbed for new technologies before they are sold to OEM partners.

"Separating the technology business into its own entity is a natural step as the focus of the two markets, hypercars, and components, are completely different. For example, the products of Rimac Technology, while being on the cutting edge of performance, also need to be extremely cost competitive and producible at huge scales, while those issues are secondary for the hypercar business," he said.
