The Honda City is one of India’s premier sedans and a hugely popular choice in its segment. The City was first manufactured in the year 1997 at Greater Noida. It launched officially in 1998 with the parent brand. The premium compact sedan comes with six petrol variants in tandem with three diesel variants. It can comfortably seat 5 people with 506 litres of boot space.

Interior space is good although it does not have the split folding rear seat feature. The City feels planted, stable and plush enough for comfortable long drives on the highway while it is excellent for hassle-free city driving as well. The 1.5 litre petrol i-VTEC engine is a tried and tested marvel and this four cylinder mill dishes out 119 BHP and 145 Nm. Power figures increase with the engine being smoother, powerful and refined. The 1.5 litre i-DTEC diesel mill makes the same 99 BHP and 200 Nm while offering greater refinement and BS-VI compliance too. NVH levels are better while the car feels agile while driving. Fuel economy of 24 kmpl for the diesel engine is more than welcome while performance has been slightly compromised at the altar of fuel economy for the petrol counterpart. Mileage of 17.8-18.4 kmpl for the manual-CVT models is good although not the best in class. The 2020 City gets Honda Connect with voice command, G-Meter for measuring gravitational force caused by your driving style and a 7-inch full-color TFT LCD panel, a first in the segment.

How is the design of Honda City?

The design of the Honda City is characteristically attractive and eye-catching. The cues from the older City are unmistakable although it seems bigger now. The curved and sharp single-edge of the Katana blade works as design inspiration behind the body character lines.

The design simply evolves from the last model and this is visible for the front fascia as well. The straight and vertical chrome slab characterizes the grille in front although the LED headlight is now different with 9-array LED for the top-end variant. This makes a standout impression while adding to the contemporary look and feel.

The LED tail lights also look attractive with their arrowhead-esque design elements and the lovely shape. The red element sticking out of the cluster is very BMW, just in a simpler avatar.

How does the Honda City drive?

The 2020 Honda City drives smoothly and feels more refined now. NVH levels are considerably lower while BS-VI compliance also helps keep things more pleasant for drivers. The 1.5 litre i-DTEC diesel engine still dishes out 99 BHP and 200 Nm of peak torque. There is lower clatter from the diesel mill filtering into the cabin while acceleration is swift with slick gear shifting alongside. The car feels quite agile in spite of being 64 kilograms heavier in comparison to the petrol manual variant.

The petrol mill gets an automatic transmission option. The 1.5 litre i-VTEC four cylinder engine churns out 119 BHP and 145 Nm of peak torque. Power has been slightly increased while the engine sounds more refined. It ensures a more silent cabin and ride quality has considerably improved with smoother engine performance. The feel is more like the Honda Civic rather than the old Honda City and this is a massive boost for drivers.

How comfortable is Honda City?

The Honda City offers ample headroom and legroom inside. The wheelbase remains the same as the old version although the redesigned front seats and dashboard make sure that you get 15 mm of additional space at the rear.

The car drives well even over rough roads with an advanced suspension system. Overall riding comfort is excellent while the plush interiors add to the feeling of comfort inside.

How's the interior?

The Honda City has a luxurious cabin with soft-touch leatherette inserts for the dashboard panel. The seats are finished likewise while leather is used for the steering wheel too.

The steering wheel unit is both telescopically and tilt adjustable. Rear seat ergonomics are much improved this time around.

How's the tech?

The Honda City comes loaded with technology features including an 8-inch touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

There is the G-Meter for measuring the gravitational force that you create via your own style of driving. This feature is only for the Indian and Malaysian variants of the Honda City. You also get a 7-inch full color TFT LCD panel which is a first in this segment. You can take your pick from various display options likewise.

Honda Connect is available, making it a connected car and you get telematics at hand such as find your car, geo-fencing and more. Most of these features can be activated through voice command via Amazon's Alexa.

How's the storage?

The Honda City offers 506 litres of boot space which is quite decent. However, boot space has come down slightly by four litres. Internal storage spaces are ample and will help you keep all your stuff without any worries.

How's the mileage of Honda City?

The manual petrol City offers 17.8 kmpl while the CVT bumps this up to 18.4 kmpl which is good but not the segment-best. The diesel variants offer excellent fuel economy of 24 kmpl.

How is the performance of Honda City?

The Honda City performs better due to a more rigid structure and a weighted steering. The latter could have been slightly stiffer although the CVT is responsive and feels nice when slotted into Sport. The CVT is great for city driving although if real fun performance is what you are after, then the manual variants are better options.

The driving character and performance will change instantly since you get more control over the sedan. Peak torque does come in sometime later in the rev cycle at more than 3500 RPM which may hinder driving performance somewhat. The gearbox however is slick and the 6th speed is immensely helpful. You can at least remain in higher gear without frequent changing. On the whole, driving performance is noteworthy.

How safe is Honda City?

Safety features abound in the 2020 Honda City. You get features like tyre pressure monitoring and lane watch which are also present in models like the Honda CR-V and Civic among others. Simply have the left indicator turned on and you will get the rear-view of the blind spot on your main display.

The new car comes with a structure that has 20.4% higher rigidity than the last model while also being lighter by 4.3 kg. Top-end variants also come with six airbags for maximum safety.

Is the Honda City a good value?

The new Honda City offers good value for money in its class. Although it does skimp slightly on boot space and performance, the luxurious interiors, good performance and mileage, refinement, attractive design and bevy of technology features make it a value proposition for buyers.

  • CVT continues to make for a comfortable drive

Final Verdict on सिटी

The new-generation Honda City is a premium, well loaded, and well-designed car. There are bits we could have been happier with, but there's plenty here to excite the segment and the die-hard Honda City fan. While the pricing remains at a premium, the equipment list is longer than before right from the base variants. The new City definitely captures the segment and how, reminding the beauty of sedans in a price point dominated by SUVs.

People also ask For

  • Which model of Honda City is best?

Considering the base V variant, Honda has given it some really decent features and it does not quite seem like the entry-level model. It gets 15-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamps, LED DRLs, the 8-inch touch screen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Honda connected car features, Alexa remote functions, keyless entry, steering-mounted controls, powered side mirrors, engine start/stop, rear AC vents, climate control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, cruise control, driver’s seat height adjustment and front and rear armrest.

The mid-range VX variant is priced over the V model, getting additional features including the sunroof, curtain airbags, 8 speakers (four extra tweeters as well), 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, leather-wrapped gear lever, 7-inch semi-digital instrument console with digital tachometer, rear parking proximity display, G-meter and some more.

Now, the top-end ZX model is not that costlier over the VX and comes with added features like the lane-watch camera, LED fog lamps, automatic LED headlights, gloss wood garnishing for the dashboard, remote power window and sunroof functionality, automatic folding mirrors, rear sunshade, one-touch power windows, leatherette upholstery and front footwell ambient lights. The mid-range VX variant is the pick of the lot since it offers almost everything that buyers seek in this segment at a slightly lower price.

They offer several additional features over the mid-range model including lane-watch camera, LED fog lamps, automatic LED headlights, gloss wood garnishing for the dashboard, remote power window and sunroof functionality, automatic folding mirrors, rear sunshade, one-touch power windows, leatherette upholstery and front footwell ambient lights.

  • Is Honda City a good car?

The 2020 Honda City is a good car to own and drive. It offers several advantages for buyers including increased space at the rear, ample storage space inside, plush upholstery and interiors, an attractive design and of course, advanced safety features including six airbags and a host of other technologies. The 2020 Honda City also gets a bevy of technological features including the 8-inch touch screen system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with the 7-inch full color TFT display. It also gets connected car features and telematics along with Amazon Alexa remote compatibility.

The electric sunroof is another value addition to the luxurious compact sedan. The petrol and diesel engines are powerful and refined while being BS-VI compatible and offering lower NVH levels. Agreed, boot space could have been slightly more and there is no rear-seat folding functionality but overall, the car makes for a value proposition by all means.

  • Is Honda City better than Maruti Suzuki Ciaz?

The Honda City competes directly with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in its segment. It is better than the Ciaz in several respects including the fact that it has more powerful 1.5 litre engines and is higher, longer and wider than the latter. It also has a 6-speed transmission system for all models as compared to 5-speed transmission systems for the Ciaz. The Ciaz is cheaper with better mileage but the City has better safety and technology features, right from the base model onwards.

It also gets an electric sunroof along with the G-Meter, connected car technology with Amazon Alexa remote compatibility and several other advanced tech features which are absent in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

  • How reliable is Honda City?

The Honda City is one of the most reliable premium compact sedans out there in the Indian market today. It drives reliably with excellent handling, good steering responses and ample agility. The car has witnessed improvements in its structural rigidity, ensuring a safer drive and better handling at the same time. It feels stable and well planted in corners and is ideal for long drives on the highway courtesy its punchy engines and good performance. The refinement and lower NVH levels are major plus points along with the comfortable suspension system and ample interior space, especially at the rear. Safety features are top-notch, covering several technological advancements, blind-spot rear views, six airbags and a lot more.

This is a true driver’s car with solid structural rigidity, a bouquet of advanced safety and driver assistance features, new-age connectivity and security telematics and of course, excellent performance along highways and city roads alike. Bad roads, potholes or uncomfortable conditions- the Honda City will absorb them all in its inimitably plush style.

  • Honda City vs. Competition

Honda City vs. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is cheaper than the Honda City and is priced between Rs. 8.40-11.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) while the City comes for Rs. 10.89-14.64 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Ciaz offers better mileage with its base petrol model offering 20 kmpl while the Honda City base petrol offers 17.8 kmpl and this goes up to 18 kmpl for the CVT. The base diesel model offers 24 kmpl which is excellent indeed. The Honda City gets a better 6-speed transmission unit and the 119 BHP petrol engine along with the 99 BHP diesel mill. The Ciaz only has the 103 BHP petrol engine. The Honda City also gets some advanced features over the Ciaz including the electric sunroof, G-Meter for measuring gravitational force caused by your driving style, 7-inch TFT full color display, connected car features with Amazon Alexa remote compatibility and more. The City is more feature-packed from the base variant onwards.

    Honda City vs. Hyundai Verna

The Honda City offers more length, width and height while being a bigger car than the Hyundai Verna. Boot space is also more for the 2020 Honda City and the new version comes loaded with tech. However, Hyundai also has BlueLink connectivity features for its Verna along with ventilated seats, wireless phone charging, cooled glove box, smart trunk and rear USB charging port which are not available for the Honda City. Both are equally well-equipped in the engine and performance department although the Verna offers a fun petrol 1.0 litre turbo option as well. The Verna also offers slightly higher fuel economy than the 2020 Honda City while being slightly costlier on the top end. The base variants also miss out on several safety and security features along with advanced tech for the Hyundai Verna. Honda offers more kit for the base variant.

    Honda City vs. Skoda Rapid

The Honda City is undoubtedly costlier than the Skoda Rapid. However, the new Honda City offers a more powerful engine, better gearbox and features like an electric sunroof, Amazon Alexa compatibility, G-Meter, connected car features and several advanced safety features that the Rapid misses out on. The Rapid is not as well equipped for its entry-level variants as the 2020 Honda City. Mileage is also better with the Honda City in comparison to the Skoda Rapid. The engine is also more powerful for the Honda City which is also longer, wider and taller. It is the bigger car of the two with a substantially longer wheelbase as well.
