MG in India: How the Brand Started
MG, short for Morris Garages, started in the UK in 1924. The brand became known for its small sports cars and roadsters, along with its familiar octagonal logo. Over the years, MG changed ownership and eventually became part of SAIC Motor, one of China's largest car manufacturers.
MG Motor India was set up in 2017 and started selling cars in India in 2019. Its first car for the Indian market was the Hector. It was a midsize SUV with a spacious cabin, a large touchscreen and connected-car features, which helped it stand out when it was launched. MG also took over a former General Motors manufacturing plant in Halol, Gujarat. The facility is still used to manufacture MG cars for the Indian market.
The company later expanded its range with the Hector Plus, ZS EV, Astor and Comet EV. It has since added more electric models, including the Windsor EV and M9 EV, while the Cyberster gives the brand a completely different option in the form of an electric performance car. MG is also now part of a joint venture in India involving JSW Group and SAIC Motor. The company continues to sell a mix of petrol, diesel and electric cars in different price ranges.

MG Technology and Features
Technology has been one of the main selling points of MG cars in India.
i-SMART Connected Car Technology
MG's i-SMART system connects the car to the internet through an embedded SIM. Depending on the model, owners can use it for features such as checking vehicle information, remote functions, navigation services, geofencing and software updates. Some MG models also support smartphone-based functions, which can make everyday use more convenient.
Large Infotainment Screens
MG is known for using large touchscreen displays in its cars. The Hector, for example, gets a large portrait-style screen that can be used for infotainment, connected functions and some vehicle controls.
Voice and AI Features
MG has also added voice and AI features to some of its cars. The Astor was one of the first cars in India to offer a personal AI assistant. It can respond to questions and carry out certain voice commands.
360-Degree Camera
Selected MG models get a 360-degree camera that shows the area around the car on the infotainment screen. This is useful when parking or driving a large SUV through a tight space.
MG Electric Cars
MG has a growing range of electric cars in India. The Comet EV is designed mainly for city use, while the Windsor EV and ZS EV offer more space. The M9 EV is a larger luxury MPV, while the Cyberster is a performance-focused electric car. These cars offer great tech and usable range to reduce range anxiety.
How Safe Are MG Cars?
Safety features vary between MG models and variants, but the company offers several standard safety systems along with advanced features on selected cars.
Level 2 ADAS
MG was one of the early brands to offer Level 2 ADAS in a midsize SUV in India. Depending on the model, these systems can include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking and rear cross-traffic alert.
Electronic Stability and Traction Control
Electronic stability control helps the driver maintain control when the car starts to lose grip. Traction control helps reduce wheelspin when accelerating on slippery surfaces. These systems can be useful during rain, sudden braking and other situations where the tyres have less grip.
360-Degree Camera
A 360-degree camera gives the driver a better view of the area around the car. It can be especially helpful in larger MG SUVs such as the Hector and Majestor when parking in tight spaces.
Airbags and Other Safety Equipment
MG cars come with safety equipment such as airbags, ABS, electronic stability control and hill-hold assistance, depending on the model and variant. Some models also offer additional driver assistance features. It is important to check the exact variant before buying because safety and driver assistance equipment can differ across the MG range.
Crash-Test Ratings
Safety ratings are specific to individual models and testing programmes. If crash-test performance is important to you, check the latest rating for the exact MG car and variant you are considering. Models such as the ZS EV and now-discontinued Gloster hold 5-star ratings by EURO NCAP and Australia NCAP, respectively.
Why Buy an MG Car?
MG has several things that make its cars interesting for buyers. The brand focuses heavily on features and technology, while its current range also gives buyers several electric options.
Lots of Features
MG cars generally offer plenty of equipment, even in segments where some of these features are not always common. Depending on the model, you can get connected-car technology, large screens, panoramic sunroofs, 360-degree cameras, powered seats and ADAS.
Good Choice of Electric Cars
MG now has several electric models instead of relying on just one EV. The Comet EV, Windsor EV, ZS EV, M9 EV and Cyberster cover very different types of buyers.
Spacious Interiors
Space is another strong point of several MG models. The Hector has a roomy cabin, while the Hector Plus adds three-row seating. The Windsor EV and M9 EV also focus heavily on passenger space.
Different Types of Cars
MG's range is no longer limited to SUVs. Buyers can choose a small hatchback-style EV, SUVs, MPVs and a two-door electric performance car.
Premium Options
The Majestor is a larger and more premium SUV, while the M9 EV and Cyberster take MG into more expensive segments.
Owning an MG Car: What's the Experience Like
Before buying an MG, it is worth looking at more than the showroom price. Service, warranty, spare parts and running costs can all affect the ownership experience.
Service Network
MG has a growing network of sales and service outlets across India. If you are searching for an MG car showroom near me, check whether the outlet also has an authorised service centre and whether it is convenient for regular servicing.
Warranty and MG Shield
MG offers warranty and roadside assistance benefits through its MG Shield programme. Depending on the model and package, this can include vehicle warranty, roadside assistance and complimentary services. The exact coverage can change between models and purchase plans, so check the current terms before buying.
EV Battery Warranty
MG's electric cars come with separate warranty coverage for the battery. This is important because the battery is one of the most expensive parts of an EV. If you are buying an MG EV, check the battery warranty period and kilometre limit for the specific model. Some cars may come with an 8-year warranty while some may have a lifetime warranty.
Maintenance Costs
Running costs depend on the car you choose. An electric car such as the Comet EV has fewer mechanical parts than a diesel SUV such as the Majestor. Larger and more expensive cars can also cost more to service, insure and repair.
Spare Parts
Parts for popular MG models are supported through the company's service network. However, some specialised parts can cost more or take longer to arrive, particularly for premium models and electric cars.
Resale Value
The resale value of an MG depends on the model, age, mileage, condition and service history. Different models can depreciate at different rates, so it is worth checking used-car prices for the specific MG you are considering.
Factors to Note Before Buying an MG Car
MG cars offer plenty of features, but there are a few things you should check before making a decision.
Check the Exact Variant
Many of MG's headline features are available only on certain variants. Don't choose a car based only on the features shown in advertisements. Check the equipment list for the exact variant you plan to buy.
Larger SUVs Can Be Harder to Drive in the City
The Hector and Majestor are fairly large vehicles. They can be comfortable on highways but may feel difficult to manage on narrow roads or in tight parking spaces. If most of your driving is in the city, take the car for a proper test drive before buying.
Pick the Right Fuel Type
MG offers petrol, diesel and electric cars. Your daily running should decide which one makes sense. A diesel SUV can work well if you regularly travel long distances, while an EV can be a better choice for predictable daily driving if you have easy access to charging.
Check Charging Before Buying an EV
If you're considering MG electric cars, don't look at the claimed range alone. Check whether you can install a charger at home, how far you normally drive and where you can charge during longer trips.
Premium Models Cost More to Run
The MG car price in India varies greatly across the lineup. A Comet EV and a Cyberster may both carry the MG badge, but their insurance, tyres, maintenance and repair costs will be very different.
Check Service Support Near You
MG's service network covers many cities, but access can still vary depending on where you live. Before booking a car, check the location of your nearest authorised workshop.
car&bike Tips for Choosing an MG
Choosing the right MG is about more than comparing prices and features. These checks can help you avoid common mistakes and pick a car that suits your actual needs.
- Take the exact variant for a test drive: The driving experience and features can vary between variants, so test the version you are actually planning to buy.
- Don't choose only for the features: MG offers a long list of technology, but focus on the features you will actually use every day.
- Test all three rows: If you're looking for an MG 7 seater car, sit in the third row of the Hector Plus and check how much boot space is left with all seats in use.
- Look at the complete cost: The listed MG car price is usually ex-showroom. Add insurance, registration, accessories, financing and running costs before making your final budget.
- Find your nearest service centre: Check your local MG showroom and authorised workshop before buying, especially if you live outside a major city.

- Great value for money5.0PerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportAshish KawaleI purchased this car in March 2021. Before finalizing my decision, I was a bit apprehensive about the brand, its perfomance, its sales and after sales service. However, after reading multiple reviews and comparing features with cars in the similar category, I took the plunge. And I'm happy with my decision. The car performs very well on city as well as on highways. Due the second wave of the pandemic, I was unable to test the car on longer drives. But recently, I travelled from Mumbai to Pune. The engine performance is very good. I managed to get an average of 17.5 kmpl on both to and fro journey to Pune. On one leg of 84 kms, I got an average of 18.9 kmpl. The creature comforts are good. Overall, the performance so far is quite right.Posted on: 2021-08-01 21:59:5411
