What's New on Mahindra XEV 9S?
Introduction
- Mahindra launched the new XEV 9S in India on 27 November, 2025.
- It is the brand's first three-row electric offering for the Indian market.
- Prices start at Rs. 19.95 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Pack One XEV 9s, and go up to Rs. 29.5 lakh for the Pack Three.
- The XEV 9s is essentially an EV derivative of the XUV700.
- It joins the XEV 9e, BE 6, and the XUV400 in the brand’s electric SUV portfolio.

Exterior
- The Mahindra XEV 9S looks similar to the XUV700, but with a revamped exterior, especially the front.
- It gets a blanked-out front grille, L-shaped LED DRLs, a light bar, and vertically stacked projector units in the headlight module.
- The silhouette is like the XUV700 with flush-fitting door handles.
- However, the XEV 9S rides on a fresh set of alloys with aero inserts.
- Moreover, it boasts roof rails, Mahindra Electric logo on both ends, and a shark-fin antenna.

Interior
- Inside, the seven-seat XEV 9S boasts a three-screen setup on the dashboard.
- This is paired to a Harman Kardon music system and, in fact, there are screens for second row occupants as well.
- The Mahindra electric SUV also comes equipped with a powered Boss mode, two-spoke multifunction flat-bottom steering wheel, auto-dimming IRVM, ambient lighting, and a powered tailgate.
- Other notable features include a panoramic sunroof, reclining second row seats, frunk, EPB with auto-hold, and headrests for all occupants.
- The XEV 9S also gets four drive modes (Everyday, Race, Range, and Snow), five levels of regen, and a 150-litre frunk.

Powertrain
- The new Mahindra XEV 9S gets the familiar 59kWh and 79kWh battery packs borrowed from the BE6 and XEV 9e siblings respectively.
- While the torque output remains the same at 380Nm for both variants, the power output is 228bhp and 282bhp for the smaller and larger battery packs respectively.
- Interestingly, there is a new 70kWh battery pack with a single electric motor.
- The latter produces 241bhp and 380Nm of torque.
- It is pitted to be the fastest seven-seater EV that can sprint from 0-100kmph in seven seconds.

Expert Review on Mahindra XEV 9S
car&bike Expert Take
“The Mahindra XEV 9S sits in the premium electric SUV space with a traditional upright roofline, a heavy battery pack, and a highly digital cabin. It ditches the sloping coupe-like shape of its siblings to offer genuine three-row seating, and is overall a highly convincing electric flagship.”

Mahindra built the XEV 9S from the ground up on its new INGLO electric architecture, focusing entirely on maximising battery range and delivering a premium, tech-heavy cabin experience. Buyers who want striking design and instant electric performance without losing a traditional SUV’s high ground clearance will find very little to complain about in this car.
Also, the XEV 9S does not share its mechanical underpinnings with older petrol or diesel models. This clean-sheet approach allowed engineers to push the wheels to the absolute corners of the vehicle’s body, freeing up massive interior space as a result. From the car&bike team, Seshan Vijayraghvan has done a detailed real-life evaluation of the car’s true capabilities. He notes,

“If you want a three-row, seven-seat EV in the 20 to 30 lakh range, this is one you shouldn’t skip.”
The XEV 9S relies on three large battery pack options and a powerful rear-mounted electric motor. The setup is geared towards fast highway cruising and immediate city acceleration.
Battery Specifications
| Engine & Transmission | Power | Torque | Drivetrain |
| 59 kWh Battery, Single Electric Motor | 228 bhp | 380 Nm | Rear-Wheel Drive, Single-speed automatic |
| 70 kWh Battery, Single Electric Motor | 241 bhp | 380 Nm | Rear-Wheel Drive, Single-speed automatic |
| 79 kWh Battery, Single Electric Motor | 282 bhp | 380 Nm | Rear-Wheel Drive, Single-speed automatic |
Key Takeaways
- The 79 kWh battery pack sits very low, which improves handling and reduces body roll.
- The 282 bhp motor pushes the SUV from zero to 100 kmph in roughly seven seconds.
- Drivers get multiple regenerative braking modes to feed power during deceleration.
City Driving Experience
- The electric motor is instant with its torque; there are no power delays.
- The automatic, single-speed reduction gearbox keeps driver engagement as low as possible.
- Putting the regenerative braking into its highest setting allows for simple one-pedal driving.
- You can, however, feel the heavy battery weight over unnatural speed breakers.
Highway Driving Experience
- On the highway, it easily cruises at 100 kmph in complete silence.
- Overtaking takes very little planning; you press the pedal, and the car darts forward.
- Wind noise is kept out of the cabin effectively, but tyre roar is heard at triple-digit speeds.
- The top speed is electronically limited to 202 kmph to prevent the battery from draining fast.

The XEV 9S embraces Mahindra’s familiar, traditional SUV shape to prioritise cabin room.
Seshan observes,
"The profile and rear section will remind you of the XUV700."
Dimensions Comparison
Dimension | Mahindra XEV 9S | Tata Harrier EV | Hyundai Ioniq 5 |
Length | 4,737 mm | 4,600 mm | 4,635 mm |
Width | 1,900 mm | 1,895 mm | 1,890 mm |
Height | 1,747 mm | 1,740 mm | 1,625 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,762 mm | 2,741 mm | 3,000 mm |
Kerb Weight | 2,201 kg | 2,335 kg | 1,910 kg |
Ground Clearance | 205 mm | 200 mm | 163 mm |
Key Takeaways
- The 4,737 mm length gives it a serious road presence.
- The 2,762 mm wheelbase frees up a lot of legroom for passengers at the back.
- Ground clearance sits at a highly practical 205 mm to clear unnatural speed breakers.
Build Quality & Materials
Inside, Mahindra used plenty of soft-touch materials, leatherette wrapping, and a gloss black theme. There are no cheap plastics in your immediate line of sight. Also, Mahindra’s INGLO platform feels incredibly stiff. Panel gaps are consistent across the exterior, while the doors are quite heavy.
The XEV 9S houses sharp LED lighting and hosts an attractive, aerodynamic shape.
Front Profile
- The front does not have the traditional air intake grille you find in ICEs.
- A massive LED light bar stretches across the entire nose of the car.
- Vertical LED headlamps sit lower down on the bumper, lighting up the road effectively.
- Mahindra’s twin-peaks logo is finished in a unique copper shade for this EV.
Side Profile
- The upright roofline heavily defines the side view.
- It avoids the lure of coupe styling so that it can accommodate taller passengers.
- Flush door handles pop out automatically when you unlock the car.
- The SUV rides on large 18-inch aero-optimised alloy wheels.
Rear Profile
- The rear features a sharp, connected LED light bar running from one side to another.
- A ‘Mahindra Infinity’ logo sits on the tailgate.
The dashboard has dropped almost all physical buttons and embraced massive screens for the car’s technology.
Cabin Layout and Quality
- A triple-screen setup spans the entire width of the dashboard.
- Mahindra covers the lower sections of the dash in soft leatherette.
- The centre console sits high up, separating the driver and front passenger.
- The gear selector is a toggle switch, freeing space for large cup holders and charging pads.

Seating Comfort
Front Row
- The floor is a bit high here because of the battery pack underneath.
- Both seats have ventilation to keep you sweat-free during the summer.
- They are wide and heavily bolstered as well.
- They get full electric adjustments, including lumbar support.
Second Row
- You can easily stretch your legs out here even with taller passengers up front.
- The completely flat floor also makes it easy for a middle passenger to sit comfortably.
- These seats feature a slide and recline function, alongside a powered boss mode.
Third Row
- The flat roofline ensures that third-row occupants get adequate headroom.
- It serves as a highly flexible space for large families on weekend trips.
Seshan notes,
"If you ask Mahindra the reason for naming this EV 9S, the one-word answer would be 'Space'."

Features That Improve Daily Use
- Three separate 12.3-inch displays
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- A premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system
- A large panoramic skyroof
The car's price easily crosses Rs. 20 lakh for all its variants.
Variant | Powertrain | Ex-Showroom Price |
Pack One Above | 59 kWh Battery (Rear-Wheel Drive) | Rs. 19.95 Lakh |
Pack One Above | 79 kWh Battery (Rear-Wheel Drive) | Rs. 21.95 Lakh |
Pack Two Above | 70 kWh Battery (Rear-Wheel Drive) | Rs. 24.45 Lakh |
Pack Two Above | 79 kWh Battery (Rear-Wheel Drive) | Rs. 25.45 Lakh |
Pack Three | 79 kWh Battery (Rear-Wheel Drive) | Rs. 27.35 Lakh |
Pack Three Above | 79 kWh Battery (Rear-Wheel Drive) | Rs. 29.45 Lakh |
The XEV 9S has three battery packs: 59 kWh, 70 kWh, and 79 kWh (all come with a lifetime warranty for the first private owner). It takes 20-25 minutes to charge 20-80 per cent with an 180 kW DC fast charger, while a home charger takes about 11.7 hours.

| Powertrain | ARAI Claimed Range | User-reported City Range | User-reported Highway Range |
| 59 kWh Battery (RWD) | 521 km | 390-420 km | 340-360 km |
| 70 kWh Battery (RWD) | 600 km | 450-480 km | 390-420 km |
| 79 kWh Battery (RWD) | 679 km | 510-540 km | 450-480 km |
Since EVs have high kinetic energy, Mahindra had to build the XEV 9S’s INGLO platform to a solid, top-tier level.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
- ISOFIX child seat mounts are safely integrated into the second row.
- Six airbags come as standard equipment across all variants.
- Pack Three and Pack Three Above have seven airbags.
- The heavy battery pack is enclosed inside a highly reinforced steel casing.
- The body shell utilises ultra-high-strength steel to form a protective safety cage.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
- The Level 2 ADAS suite manages adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.
- Electronic stability control actively prevents the rear wheels from spinning out on wet or loose surfaces.
- A high-definition 360-degree camera helps navigate and park the wide SUV body safely.
This car’s cabin completely gives up traditional physical buttons on the dashboard in favour of an expansive, wall-to-wall screen system.
Infotainment and Interface
- A coast-to-coast layout houses three separate 12.3-inch displays across the dashboard.
- The driver views a digital instrument cluster, the centre screen manages core navigation and settings, and the front passenger gets a dedicated entertainment display.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect instantly to mobile devices.
- Navigating the complex digital menus while driving can cause some distraction, though.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- The front seats offer three levels of cooling ventilation.
- A premium Harman Kardon audio system provides heavy bass response and clear vocals.
- The massive panoramic skyroof allows plenty of natural light into the interior.
- The high-set centre console also includes dual wireless phone charging pads.

The mechanical packaging provides practical storage spaces across both ends of the vehicle.
- The rear cargo area holds 527 litres of luggage, suitable for two large suitcases.
- But the slightly slanted rear glass restricts you from stacking unusually tall boxes.
- A 150-litre front trunk (frunk) sits under the bonnet for storing charging cables.
- The rear seats fold completely flat to unlock a massive cargo bay for much larger items.

Weighing well over two tonnes, the chassis of this car works with a firmly tuned suspension to manage that heavy footprint.
City Driving
- The vehicle feels quite heavy to drive at lower speeds.
- The stiff suspension calibration also registers thuds when hitting sharp potholes.
- But the steering remains very light, letting you navigate narrow city streets with less effort.
Highway Driving
- The open road is where the firm suspension configuration functions best.
- The vehicle remains completely flat at triple-digit cruising speeds, completely avoiding the floaty, bouncy characteristics of traditional ladder-frame vehicles.
- The exceptionally low centre of gravity keeps the chassis firmly planted through sweeping highway corners.

There are many variants for the Mahindra XEV 9S right now. The difference between them is mostly in the battery packs and some technological hits or misses.
| Variant | Powertrain | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
| Pack One Above | 59 kWh or 79 kWh Battery (RWD) | Triple 12.3-inch screens, connected car technology, panoramic sunroof, cruise control, six airbags and essential safety features | Buyers seeking the best value with a premium feature set |

The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- Physical dials and buttons for air conditioning
- Comfortable suspension over broken, low-speed city roads

Choosing the right XEV 9S variant depends on your budget, desired driving range, and the features you value most.
Best Value Overall: Pack One Above
The Pack One Above has an excellent balance of features and pricing. It includes the premium cabin, triple-screen dashboard, panoramic sunroof, connected car technology, etc.
Best Balance of Features and Price: Pack Two Above
The Pack Two Above adds desirable features such as the Harman Kardon Dolby Atmos audio system, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, wireless charging, a powered tailgate, and additional ADAS functions.
Best Flagship Experience: Pack Three Above
The Pack Three Above is the fully loaded XEV 9S. It comes with every feature Mahindra offers, including the augmented reality head-up display, Auto Park Assist, Secure360 live surveillance, an in-cabin camera, premium upholstery, etc.
The premium electric SUV space features strong alternatives from both global brands and domestic manufacturers. Three other names that make a mark here are the Tata Harrier EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and BYD Seal.
| Model | Powertrain | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Mahindra XEV 9S | 79 kWh Battery | Triple screens, upright stance, diverse battery packs | Rs. 19.95 - 29.45 Lakh |
| Tata Harrier EV | 60-80 kWh Battery | Imposing road presence, proven platform, rough-road tech | Rs. 21.69 - 29.68 Lakh |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 | 72.6 kWh Battery | Retro-modern aesthetics, ultra-fast charging, plush ride | Rs. 55.70 Lakh |
| BYD Seal | 82.5 kWh Battery | Low-slung sedan handling, 500+ bhp performance option | Rs. 41.50 - 53.65 Lakh |
Which Electric Vehicle Should You Choose?
- Choose the Mahindra XEV 9S if you prioritise a tech-heavy cabin, three rows of room, and a massive 79 kWh battery pack.
- Choose the Tata Harrier EV if you prefer traditional, muscular SUV styling and want dedicated rough-road capability.
- Choose the Hyundai Ioniq 5 if you have a flexible budget and want a deeply comfortable, futuristic lounge experience by paying a lot more.
- Choose the BYD Seal if ground clearance is not a concern and you want a sharp-handling, low-slung electric performance sedan.

Pros
- The triple-screen dashboard up front
- The 59 kWh battery’s 400-km real-world city range
- The low centre of gravity for taking fast corners
Cons
- No physical climate control switches
- The firm suspension setup for low speeds
- Rear visibility is a bit limited
Verdict
Mahindra took a major technological step forward with the XEV 9S. By ditching the traditional dashboard buttons for an expansive wall of glass screens, it has most things going right for itself as a highly advanced electric flagship. The INGLO platform delivers excellent high-speed highway stability, and the battery pack has genuine long-distance driving capabilities. You do have to accept a stiff low-speed ride. Still, it’s a minor compromise for a vehicle that packages this much space and performance together.
Seshan concludes,
“The XEV 9S works for anyone who was not convinced about the 9E because of its Coupe design, or is looking for something bigger with extra seating.”
Mahindra XEV 9S range
