Kia Sonet has been launched in India. Prices for the Sonet subcompact SUV start at Rs. 6.71 lakh and go up to Rs. 11.99 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom India. Do note that the prices are introductory. Kia said it received over 25,000 bookings for the Sonet and is getting an average of 1,000 bookings a day. It is the third model launch from Kia Motors after the Seltos and the Carnival. The two key USPs of the Sonet are its long list of features and sharp styling, setting it apart from its competition. India is the first country to get the Kia Sonet and it will be exported to over 70 countries from here. The company says that the Sonet has been tested for over 1 lakh kilometres in India.
The new Kia Sonet gets two primary trims which are the Tech-Line and GT-Line. The former features five variants - HTE, HTK, HTK+, HTX, and HTX+, while the GT-Line trim will only have one top-end variant - GTX+. In addition, the Sonet gets three engine options, which are a 1.2-litre petrol, a 1.5-litre diesel and a 1.0-litre turbo GDi and all engine options get manual and automatic gearbox options.

Lastly, the 1.5-litre diesel variant of the Sonet SUV gets two variants, one with a 6-speed manual and one with a 6-speed automatic, which is a torque converter. The diesel manual variant of the Sonet has a claimed fuel economy of 24.1 kmpl and a 0-100 kmph sprint time of 12.3 seconds. Kia Sonet Expert Review
Kia Motors India has been building a strong product line-up that was fortified with the launch of the Sonet subcompact SUV. The Kia Sonet marked the company entry in the highly coveted sub-4 metre SUV space, going up against strong players like Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and the Ford EcoSport. However, the Kia Sonet also comes with some of the best-in-class features, along with capable petrol and diesel engines, and an attractive price tag.
While the Kia Sonet is based on the same platform as the Hyundai Venue, its design styling cues have been borrowed from its older sibling, the Kia Seltos. Elements like the Tiger Nose grille, sharp lighting units with what Kia calls the heartbeat pattern, and muscular character lines make it a head-turner. The Sonet is offered in two main trims - GT-Line and Tech-Line, and while the former comes with sportier styling with red accents and aggressive bumpers, the latter stays a bit mellow. In term, features though both are almost at par with each other offering LED headlamps, LED DRLs, sporty alloy wheels, roof tails and LED taillamps.
Step inside and the premiumness of the Sonet’s cabin become evident. Like the exterior here too you can witness visual differences between the GT Line and Tech Line variants. The former gets all-black interior with contrast red accents and stitching that add to its sporty nature. The GT Line package is only offered in the top-end GTX+ trim so, it comes with all the bells and whistles like a flat-bottom steering wheel, ventilated seats, wireless charging and 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with UVO connected car tech. The Tech Line package comes with comes in multiple variants, however, the top-spec HTX+ is very similar to the GTX+ but its comes with dual-tone interior with regular stitching. However, it misses out on features like follow-me-home headlamps, wireless phone charger, steering mounted audio controls, Bluetooth, UVO Lite.
Under the hood, the Kia Sonet comes with 3 engine options - a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that is offered in two different states of tune. The 1.2-litre engine is the tried and tested one and it continues to make 82 bhp and 115 Nm of peak torque and it comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Overall, it offers decent performance, and we are familiar with it. However, the star of the show here is the turbo-petrol unit, that churning out 118 bhp and 172 Nm torque, and it’s mated to either a 6-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) or a DCT automatic units. In both cased the engine feels quite fun to drive and engaging. As for the diesel option, the manual version comes with a 1.5-litre unit that makes 99 bhp and 240 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The engine is nice and peppy and offers a good amount of torque. However, if you opt for the automatic version that comes with the torque converter unit, you’ll get a more powerful 1.5-litre engine, the same on that powers the Seltos. It makes 113 bhp and develops 250 Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine is responsive, masks its lag well, and is well mated to the 6-Speed automatic gearbox. It's quick-shifting; it's smooth, and also downshifts quite quickly, to give you that quick response, when you need it.
In terms of safety features, the Kia Sonet comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, front disc brakes, central locking, and emergency stop signal as standard. However, if you are opting for the higher variants, you’ll get features like - vehicle stability control, electronic stability control, and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), along with rear parking camera, auto headlamps with cornering function, ISOFIX child seat mounts, seatbelt warning, parking sensors, and speed sensing door locks, and Smart Pure Air Purifier with Virus protection. If you opt for the GTX+ trim then you’ll get 6 airbags.
As mentioned before, the new Kia Sonet is offered in two primary trims - Tech-Line and GT-Line, and while the former features five variants - HTE, HTK, HTK+, HTX, and HTX+, the GT-Line trim will only have one top-end variant - GTX+. And all trims are priced between Rs. 6.71 lakh to Rs. 12.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Compared to its cousin, the Hyundai Venue, the base trim of the Sonet is Rs. 4,000 cheaper, however, the top-spec model is Rs. 1.24 lakh more expensive. In fact, the lower-spec variant of the Sonet managed to undercut all its rivals by almost Rs. 1.5 lakh, however, its top-spec GTX+ automatic (both petrol and diesel) trims are the most expensive among all rivals. However, for the premium, you also get some best-in-class features, and a segment-first diesel automatic.
Gets UVO Connected Car Technology
Diesel Engine Comes with a Torque converter automatic
Gets several safety features and Creature comforts as standard
GT Line trim is only offered in the top-spec variant
Only GTX+ variant get 6 airbags
Limited rear-seat space
The Kia Sonet comes with four engine options and five transmission choices, and based on the variant you select, there are multiple options to choose from. And while the top-end trim might be more expensive than the others, the Sonet also offers a tonne of features that are not available most of the models in this segment. In fact, even the Venue does not get ventilated seats and virus protection, which the Sonet offers. So, in a nutshell, the Sonet is certainly a value or money product, that comes with best-in-class features, along with capable petrol and diesel engines.
