car&bike Expert Take
“The Scorpio-N feels like a proper evolution of the original big-bodied Scorpio. It maintains the rugged character and road presence, but adds refinement, improved ride quality and modern tech. The design may be a little safe, but the driving experience is a giant leap forward.”

Few SUVs in India have the kind of legacy that the Mahindra Scorpio has. First launched in 2002, the model quickly became one of the most recognisable SUVs in the country. The latest Mahindra Scorpio-N is the third generation of that lineage and comes after almost two decades of continuous popularity.
Mahindra internally referred to the project as Z101, and expectations were naturally high. Siddharth Vinayak Patankar reviewed the SUV in 2022 and his insights are shared throughout this review. According to Siddharth, the new SUV is more like a complete re-engineering than an update, with no major components carried over from the previous generation.

The Scorpio-N follows the brand's traditional formula of a body-on-frame chassis, powerful petrol and diesel engines and optional four-wheel drive. At the same time, Mahindra has added modern technology, better cabin quality and much better ride and handling. With rivals such as the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Hyundai Alcazar now in the same space, the Scorpio-N is now in a space where buyers expect more than just rugged capability but modern comfort as well.
Siddharth summed up the experience during his drive:
“It's a completely different car. The refinement, steering feel and overall ride quality is all a huge leap forward.”
The Scorpio-N has two engine options, a turbo-petrol and a turbo-diesel, both with a manual and automatic transmission. Unlike many SUVs in this price range, the diesel engine also has rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive options.
Engine Options Tested
Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission Options |
2.0-Litre mStallion Turbo Petrol | 200 bhp | 370 Nm (MT) / 380 Nm (AT) | Six-speed MT / six-speed AT |
2.2-Litre mHawk Diesel | 130-172 bhp | 300-400 Nm | Six-speed MT / six-speed AT |
The diesel engine is still the core of the Scorpio range, providing good torque at lower revs. The petrol engine focuses on refinement and responsiveness.
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In normal traffic, the torque of the diesel engine makes the Scorpio-N feel effortless to drive. Once turbo spools up, the acceleration feels strong and predictable. Siddharth said that the previous Scorpio was crude and noisy, whereas the new model brings in a much more refined experience.
The automatic gearbox also provides convenience in heavy traffic. It isn't the quickest unit in the segment; however, it moves effortlessly and rarely feels confused while driving in a relaxed way.
Highway Driving
The Scorpio-N is most comfortable on highways. The diesel engine has no problem cruising at 100-120 kmph with ample torque at its disposal for overtakes. Even when it is pushed harder, the SUV is stable and composed.
Siddharth explained that the biggest improvement is the balance overall, in terms of ride and handling:
“The old Scorpio had a lot of bounce and nervous behaviour at speed. That’s gone. This one has a planted feeling and is much more mature.”
Manual vs Automatic
- The six-speed manual gearbox allows for good control, particularly for drivers who like to work with the torque band of the engine.
- The six-speed Aisin automatic is the better choice for daily driving. It works well with both engines and delivers smooth downshifts when more power is required.
The Mahindra Scorpio-N is true to the visual identity that made the original Scorpio so recognisable on Indian roads. Instead of radically redesigning the SUV, Mahindra decided to evolve its familiar boxy silhouette, but make it bigger, wider and more modern in execution. It is built on a stronger ladder frame platform, which immediately gives it a more planted stance. Yet, the brand has carefully retained the upright proportions that buyers associate with the Scorpio badge.
Siddharth noted in his review that the design direction is intentionally conservative:
“You take one look at it and you know immediately that it's a Scorpio. That was clearly not accidental.”
Key design characteristics include:
- Tall bonnet and upright stance that reinforce the rugged character of the SUV
- Squared wheel arches with heavily pronounced cladding on the body
- Distinctive DRL signature inspired by a scorpion tail motif
- Larger 18-inch alloy wheels on higher trims
- Upright rear design with vertical LED tail lamps
The Scorpio-N may not push boundaries on a stylistic level, but its road presence and instantly recognisable shape are among its biggest strengths.
Mahindra Scorpio-N vs Tata Safari vs Mahindra XUV 7XO – Dimensions
Dimension | Mahindra Scorpio-N | Tata Safari | Mahindra XUV 7XO |
Length | 4,662 mm | 4,668 mm | 4,695 mm |
Width | 1,917 mm | 1,922 mm | 1,890 mm |
Height | 1,857 mm | 1,795 mm | 1,755 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,750 mm | 2,741 mm | 2,750 mm |
Ground Clearance | 187 mm | 205 mm | 200 mm |
The Scorpio-N is very close to both the Safari and XUV 7XO in terms of overall size, but with a taller stance and ladder frame construction, it has a much more rugged look. While rivals are leaning towards a more urban SUV design, the Scorpio-N maintains a traditional off-road-ready character, which is exactly what many buyers expect from the nameplate.
https://images.carandbike.com/cms/articles/2025/6/3205535/Mahindra_Scorpio_N_beb656820d.jpgThe Scorpio-N's exterior design is all about muscle proportions and SUV presence over sleek styling.
Front Profile
The front fascia is dominated by the new grille of Mahindra with vertical chrome slats and the updated twin peaks logo. The bonnet is tall and sculpted, and adds to the imposing look. Higher variants receive LED projector headlamps with double barrel elements and lower trims have halogen units. The DRLs curve upwards around the fog lamps, creating a subtle scorpion tail design.

Siddharth observed:
“The face is tall, bold and muscular, just as you would expect from a Scorpio.”
Side Profile
From the side, the Scorpio-N appears substantial. The large glass area allows for better visibility, as well as making up part of the upright SUV silhouette.
Key highlights include:
- Squared wheel arches
- Strong shoulder line all through the body
- Chrome garnish with the scorpion sting motif near the rear quarter glass
- 17-inch or 18-inch wheels, depending on variant
Rear Profile
The rear design is simple and functional. The vertical LED tail lamps are still a Scorpio signature, but according to Siddharth, they are reminiscent of older Volvo designs. Another carryover element is the side-opening tailgate, which Mahindra decided to keep even as it departed from the old jump-seat set-up.
Siddharth commented:
“I personally would have preferred a conventional hatch door. It would have been more practical.”
Inside the Scorpio-N, the biggest change compared to the previous generation is clear. The cabin is much more modern, better finished and obviously more premium. The dashboard is low and horizontal, reinforcing the rugged theme of the SUV. A coffee and black dual-tone theme with leatherette accents adds a sense of richness.
Siddharth admitted that he had some doubts about the colour combination:
“In pictures the brown looked dull, but when you are actually with it it seems to really be richer and a lot nicer.”
Cabin Layout and Quality
The Scorpio-N has a clean and functional dashboard with most of the controls within easy reach.
Some of the notable cabin elements are:
- Eight-inch touchscreen infotainment with AdrenoX connected car technology
- Semi-digital instrument cluster
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Wireless charging pad
- Dual-zone climate control on higher trims
Fit and finish are improved over the previous Scorpio, although some of the lower plastics still feel basic for the price.
Seating Comfort
First Row
The front seats have a commanding driving position, which has always been a defining trait of the Scorpio. Large windows and a relatively short dashboard provide better outward vision. Driver seat height adjustment is available from mid variants and higher trims add a six-way powered driver seat.
Second Row
The second row comes in two setups:
- Three-seat bench (most variants)
- Captain seats (Z8L only)
Captain seats are more comfortable with fold-down armrests and ample under-thigh support.
Passengers also get:
- Rear AC vents
- USB Type-C charging port
- Dedicated blower controls
The seats themselves do not slide forward or backwards, which Siddharth pointed out as a small miss for a modern SUV.
Third Row
The Scorpio-N is standard with a three-row configuration, and is available in six- and seven-seater configurations. Access is easier than you might think because of the one-touch tumble mechanism on the second row.
However, the third row is most suitable for:
- Children
- Short-distance travel for young adults
Adults may find knee room limited, since the second row does not slide.
Mahindra has placed the Scorpio-N in a very broad price bracket to cater to both the traditional Scorpio buyers and new SUV buyers seeking a tough yet modern three-row SUV. The lineup begins with relatively accessible base variants but quickly moves into premium territory with the higher Z8 and Z8L trims that come with advanced technology, comfort and safety features.
Mahindra also offers the SUV in petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and optional four-wheel drive, which explains the huge spread of variants. Here are some of the most relevant trims available in the market.
Mahindra Scorpio-N Ex-Showroom Prices in India
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price (Approx.) |
Z2 | Petrol MT / Diesel MT | Rs. 13.49 – Rs. 13.99 Lakh |
Z4 | Petrol MT / Diesel MT / AT | Rs. 15.10 – Rs. 17.10 Lakh |
Z6 | Diesel MT | Rs. 16.50 Lakh |
Z8 Select | Petrol MT / Diesel MT / AT | Rs. 16.84 – Rs. 18.75 Lakh |
Z8 | Petrol / Diesel MT / AT | Rs. 18.86 – Rs. 20.35 Lakh |
Z8L | Petrol / Diesel MT / AT / 4x4 | Rs. 20.30 – Rs. 24.34 Lakh |
Note: Prices depend on engine, transmission and drivetrain configuration.
The Z4 variant serves as the practical entry point into the Scorpio-N range, while the Z8 and Z8L trims include most of the premium features expected by buyers of modern SUVs.
Mileage figures for the Scorpio-N vary significantly depending on the engine, drivetrain and transmission configuration. As expected, the diesel engine is still the more efficient option, particularly for long-distance driving. From what has been seen and experienced during our testing, the petrol engine favours performance and refinement, rather than outright efficiency.
Important things that were noticed from our testing:
- Diesel variants have much better efficiency during highway cruising
- Automatic versions have slightly lower mileage than manual models
- The petrol engine uses more fuel in urban driving
- Highway efficiency is greatly improved when cruising at constant speeds
Observed Fuel Efficiency
| Engine & Transmission | ARAI Claimed Mileage | Real-World City Mileage | Real-World Highway Mileage |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol MT | 12.17 kmpl | 8–10 kmpl | 11–13 kmpl |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol AT | 12.12 kmpl | 7–9 kmpl | 10–12 kmpl |
| 2.2-Litre Diesel MT | 15.94 kmpl | 10–12 kmpl | 14–16 kmpl |
| 2.2-Litre Diesel AT | 15.42 kmpl | 9–11 kmpl | 13–15 kmpl |
The diesel engine is still the better option for people who drive frequently on the highways, while the petrol variant is for those who prioritise smooth and quiet performance.
Mahindra has greatly enhanced the safety credentials of the Scorpio-N when compared to the previous generation. The SUV now has a ring structure body construction that uses high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel for better crash protection. The SUV has also earned a five-star Global NCAP rating, which puts it among the safest vehicles in its class.
Passive Safety and Structural Protection
Safety equipment has been improved throughout the lineup. Some of the common safety features are:
- Dual front airbags
- Electronic Stability Control
- ABS with EBD
- Hill hold and hill descent control
- ISOFIX child seat mounts
- All-wheel disc brakes
Higher variants add:
- Side and curtain airbags
- Tyre pressure monitoring system
- Front parking camera and sensors
These safety elements work together in harmony to provide a safer and more well-put-together driving experience for families. The top-spec Z8L variant also introduces Level 2 ADAS features, which include forward collision warning, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.
Mahindra has given the Scorpio-N a good dose of comfort, connectivity and convenience features. The SUV draws on a number of technology elements from the brand's more recent models, especially the XUV range.
The Scorpio-N brings Mahindra's AdrenoX infotainment platform, which incorporates connected car technology and smartphone connectivity.
Key technology features include:
- Eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Built-in navigation and telematics
- Amazon Alexa integration
- Wireless phone charging
Higher variants also get a 12-speaker Sony immersive
sound system, which delivers impressive audio quality for the segment.
Siddharth said there was one drawback during his drive:
“The touchscreen works well but the resolution could definitely be better, especially in bright daylight.”
In addition to infotainment functions, the Scorpio-N also has a number of everyday convenience functions. These include push-button start/stop, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlamps and wipers, rear AC vents with blower control and a powered driver seat (top variants). All of which adds to the convenience that families expect in this price range.
The Scorpio-N has a capacity of 460 litres with all three rows in use. In practical terms, we tested that the boot can accommodate:
- Two or three backpacks with all rows in place
- Multiple suitcases when the third row is folded
- Larger travel bags for longer journeys
When the third row seats are folded, the cargo space is
greatly increased to about 786 litres. The maximum cargo capacity is reported to be as high as 1,799 litres with the second and third rows folded. However, the folded third-row seats do not sit completely flat.
The greatest transformation of the Scorpio-N appears when you start driving. The older Scorpio was renowned for its raw power and road presence, though refinement, ride quality and stability were never its forte. With the new generation, Mahindra has evidently focused on addressing those weaknesses.
City Driving
In city conditions, the Scorpio-N is much more refined. The steering is light and easy to handle at low speeds, making manoeuvring such a big SUV surprisingly manageable. The commanding driving position and large glass area also help to improve visibility in traffic.
The suspension set-up also deals with potholes and speed breakers with good composure. Body movement is more controlled than the old Scorpio, but because of the tall stance, there is a little bit of side-to-side movement over rough roads.
Highway Driving
On highways, the Scorpio-N is much more stable than its predecessor. The SUV cruises comfortably at 100-120 kmph, and the diesel engine gives good mid-range torque for overtakes.
A major reason for improvement is the new suspension setup:
- Double wishbone suspension at the front
- Penta-link rear suspension with Watts linkage
Mahindra has also introduced frequency-dependent damping, like the XUV range, which helps the suspension to adapt to road conditions.
Siddharth emphasised the degree of improvement:
“The old car used to get nervous at higher speeds. This one has a planted feel to it and is much more mature.”
Mahindra offers the Scorpio-N in several trims, but the core lineup is around Z2, Z4, Z6, Z8 and Z8L variants. Each step up the ladder adds more comfort, technology and safety features.
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
Z2 | Petrol / Diesel MT | Basic safety kit, manual AC, 17-inch steel wheels | Budget-focused buyers |
Z4 | Petrol / Diesel MT & AT | Infotainment system, Android Auto, driver seat height adjustment | Value-focused buyers |
Z6 | Diesel MT | Sunroof, cosmetic enhancements | Mid-budget buyers |
Z8 | Petrol / Diesel MT & AT | Dual-zone climate control, push-button start, premium cabin | Feature-focused buyers |
Z8L | Petrol / Diesel MT & AT / 4x4 | ADAS, Sony sound system, powered driver seat | Buyers seeking the full package |
What You Don’t Get
Despite the strong feature list, there are still a few things that are missing:
- No panoramic sunroof
- No sliding second-row seats
- Third-row space is limited for adults
- Touchscreen resolution could be better
The choice of which Scorpio-N variant to get is largely determined by how much technology and capability you want.
Best for Most Buyers: Z8 Diesel
The Z8 variant brings a good balance of features, performance and pricing. You get premium equipment like dual zone climate control and push button start while keeping the price lower than the fully loaded Z8L.
Best for Off-Road Capability: Z8L Diesel 4x4
Buyers who intend to explore rough terrains should look at the Z8L 4x4 variant. It adds Mahindra's 4XPLOR terrain management system with modes for sand, mud and snow.
Best Budget Option: Z4 Diesel
The Z4 delivers the essentials without leaving anything to be desired on the core Scorpio experience. It also offers access to automatic and four-wheel drive at a lower price point.
The Scorpio-N is competing with several three-row SUVs in India. While some of the competition are more focused on comfort and urban usability, the Scorpio-N has a rugged construction and optional four-wheel-drive capability.
Model | Engine Options | Mileage (ARAI) | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
Mahindra Scorpio-N | Petrol / Diesel | 12.12–15.94 kmpl | Rugged ladder-frame SUV with 4x4 option | Rs. 13.49 – Rs. 24.34 Lakh |
Tata Safari | Diesel | 14–16 kmpl | Premium interior and strong road presence | Rs. 16 – Rs. 27 Lakh |
Mahindra XUV 7XO | Petrol / Diesel | 13–17 kmpl | More modern features and a refined ride | Rs. 14 – Rs. 26 Lakh |
Hyundai Alcazar | Petrol / Diesel | 17–20 kmpl | Feature-rich and comfortable for families | Rs. 14 – Rs. 21 Lakh |
Which SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Scorpio-N if you want good road presence and off-road capability.
- Choose the Safari if interior space and comfort are your priorities.
- Choose the XUV 7XO if you want a more modern and feature-packed SUV.
- Choose the Alcazar if comfort and technology are more important than rugged capability.
Pros
- Strong road presence and classic Scorpio identity
- Powerful petrol and diesel engines
- Optional Four Wheel Drive capabilities
- Much improved ride and handling
- Solid safety credentials with a five-star rating
Cons
- The third row feels cramped for adults
- Interior fit and finish could be improved
- Touchscreen resolution appears quite dated
Verdict
The Mahindra Scorpio-N is one of the biggest generational upgrades the model has ever received. While the design plays it safe, the improvements beneath the skin are significant. Ride quality, steering feel and overall refinement have all improved dramatically, transforming the Scorpio from a rugged utility SUV to a much more balanced family vehicle. At the same time, it still has the ladder frame construction and four-wheel-drive capability that many buyers expect from the badge.
The Scorpio-N may not be the most luxurious SUV in its segment, but when it comes to buyers who value road presence, capability and a strong mechanical foundation, it is one of the most compelling options in its class.
Siddharth summarised the experience neatly following his drive:
“This is a massively improved car. It takes many leaps forward.”
