Expert Review on MG Comet EV
car&bike Expert Take
"The MG Comet EV is most suited to urban drivers who are looking for a second car or primary daily commuter for short distances. It addresses purchase cost, tight turning radius and efficient city range, but in so doing, it sacrifices performance, extended highway range and fast-charging flexibility. It is best suited as a simple, low-running-cost commuter for tackling urban traffic.”
The MG Comet EV was launched in India in 2023 and it is the cheapest electric product from MG Motor India. In a market where the electric hatchbacks are constantly improving in terms of battery size and performance, the Comet EV has a different approach. It's looking at the minimal footprint through efficient packaging and city usability rather than out-and-out range or power.
This review is based on evaluation inputs from the car&bike team, including insights from Shams Raza Naqvi’s impressions on the road as seen in the YouTube video on our channel. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the features is done by Aashish Bharadwaj. The focus here is to understand the Comet EV's performance in real-world city conditions as well as its standing in the entry-level EV segment.

Priced at around Rs. 7.49 lakh to Rs. 9.97 lakh (ex-showroom), the Comet EV is trying to compete in the sub-Rs. 11 lakh EV bracket. It is competing with cars such as the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3, but the positioning is different. While competitors have bigger batteries and longer claimed range, the Comet is much more narrowly focused on small dimensions, lower cost and simplified urban use.
Shams Raza Naqvi summarises the intent clearly:
“MG is clearly trying to break the myth that if it’s small, it has to be simple.”
The MG Comet EV is a continuation of the small battery and rear wheel drive electric layout, fine-tuned for driving around the city, not cruising down the highway.
Engine Specifications
| Battery Capacity | 17.3 – 17.4 kWh |
| Power | 41.4 bhp |
| Torque | 110 Nm |
| Transmission | Automatic (Single-Speed) |
| Drivetrain | Rear-wheel drive |
| DC Fast Charging | Not supported |
Driving Experience: Real World
The character of the Comet EV is determined by smoothness and not by acceleration. Power delivery is linear and predictable, which is suitable for stop-start traffic. Peak torque is available instantly, as is to be expected from an electric motor, but overall output is modest.
As Shams Raza Naqvi observes:
“The power and torque figures are sufficient to give you the thrust you’re looking for in most situations. In fact, they ensure a rather peppy drive.”
City Driving
In city conditions, we found the Comet EV to be easy and unintimidating to drive. The small footprint and small turning radius make it especially convenient in narrow streets and tight parking spaces. The light electric power steering takes less effort during low-speed manoeuvres and the throttle response is tuned for smoothness as opposed to urgency.
Regenerative braking is noticeable and useful in traffic, helping conserve energy in the frequent decelerations. Ride quality is generally compliant for a car of this size. Over uneven city roads and speed breakers, suspension tuning is more about comfort. Given its small dimensions, some of the road noise gets into the cabin, but motor noise is minimal.

Shams Raza Naqvi highlights its agility:
“Changing lanes is very easy. With a turning radius of just 4.2 metres, it really comes in handy in heavy traffic.”
Highway Driving
On highways, the Comet EV is adequate rather than enthusiastic. It can sustain legal cruising speeds of about 80-100 kmph, but beyond that, acceleration is slow. Range tends to decrease at sustained higher speeds, which is typical for EVs with smaller battery packs.
High-speed overtakes need to be planned for and the car is not designed for long intercity runs. Stability is acceptable within its intended speed band and body roll is controlled because of the short wheelbase and low centre of gravity provided by the battery placement.
Aashish Bharadwaj states this clearly:
“It’s clearly not meant for high-speed roads and intercity travel on highways.”
The MG Comet EV follows a minimalist EV-specific design philosophy. The front fascia has a clean, closed grille design typical of electric vehicles. Higher trims are equipped with LED lighting elements and unique daytime running light signatures. The large glasshouse is a characteristic visual attribute and makes a substantial contribution to outward visibility. Unlike conventional hatchbacks, the Comet has upright and compact proportions. It emphasises vertical space and efficient cabin layout.

Aashish Bharadwaj observes:
“The unconventional hatchback with an oddly pleasing design still doesn’t fail to turn heads wherever it goes.”
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | MG Comet EV | Tata Tiago EV | Citroen eC3 |
| Length | 2,974 mm | 3,843 mm | 3,981 mm |
| Width | 1,505 mm | 1,709 mm | 1,733 mm |
| Height | 1,640 mm | 1,536 mm | 1,604 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,010 mm | 2,400 mm | 2,540 mm |
The Comet EV is much shorter than its competitors. This compact size adds to the manoeuvrability, but also determines its positioning as a city-specialised vehicle rather than a conventional five-door hatchback competitor.
Updates for 2026 emphasis on compact proportions, high visibility and distinctive colour options rather than any major alteration to its fundamental shape or size.
Front Profile
The EV-specific closed grille dominates the front. LED elements in higher variants give it a modern appearance. The centrally positioned MG badge reinforces the brand identity, while the upright position enhances forward visibility. The dual-tone colour schemes add a lot to its visual attraction.

As Shams Raza Naqvi notes:
“The dual-tone options, like Apple Green with a Starry Black roof, really make it stand out on the road.”
Side Profile
The silhouette is compact with little overhang. Wheel sizes are 12-inch only and optimised for city efficiency rather than sporty intent. The high glass area enhances visibility and makes the cabin airy. Charging access is neatly integrated into the body panel and keeps the side profile clean.
Rear Profile
The rear design is upright and simple. Tail lamps are cleanly integrated and the flat back section maximises the interior space within the limited overall length. The focus is still practical and not decorative.

When we got inside the Comet EV, we discovered that the cabin is modern and playful with a clear urban focus.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard is based on a flat and clean design theme with the 10.25-inch touchscreen prominently above the centre. Next to it is a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, which gives the cabin a cohesive, wide-screen look. The layout is clean and simple, without any unnecessary layers or heavy styling elements.
As Shams Raza Naqvi notes:
“Even the cabin design of the Comet EV really appeals to you with no hint of cost-cutting. It looks quite premium.”
The centre console is minimalistic with a small bridge between the seats and little storage space, but the design is purposeful rather than unfinished. The twin-screen arrangement is still the visual highlight of the interior. The graphics are clean and the integration between the infotainment and digital cluster is modern for the segment.
Seating Comfort
Front Row
The front seats are upright, which is suitable for city driving. The tall glasshouse and large windows provide good visibility. Cushioning is good for short commutes, but for long distance support is limited. Adjustments are manual with no driver height control. Entry and exit are easy because of the large doors and upright position.
Shams Raza Naqvi sums it up clearly:
“I’ve got good space here on the first row and a very clear view of the road.”
Second Row
The rear seats benefit from the EV-specific packaging, with no transmission tunnel and a flat floor improving foot space, while legroom is reasonable and headroom adequate thanks to the tall body. However, shoulder room remains narrow and it’s best suited for two adults. The ingress and egress are inconvenient due to the two-door layout, which is a key drawback for many buyers.

As Shams explains:
“It’s a car that’s less than three metres, so there is a bit of compromise in under-thigh support, but the headroom and knee room aren’t bad at all.”
Features That Improve Daily Use
- 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Digital instrument cluster
- More than 50 connected car features
- Wireless smartphone connectivity
- Voice commands
- Digital key with app-based lock/unlock and drive function
- Power windows for all four doors
- Steering-mounted controls
- Reverse parking camera
- Rear parking sensors
- ABS with EBD
- Electronic Stability Control
- Electronic parking brake
There is no automatic climate control, no wireless phone charging, no DC fast charging capability, no ADAS features and no sunroof, although most of its rivals also miss these features. In this price bracket, some rivals have faster charging options or a wider safety package.
The MG Comet EV is offered in a number of different variants based on battery configuration and features.
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Powertrain | Ex-Showroom Price |
Comet EV Executive | 17.3 kWh, RWD, Single-Speed | Rs. 7.50–7.60 lakh |
Comet EV Excite | 17.3 kWh, RWD, Single-Speed | Rs. 8.56 lakh |
Comet EV Excite FC | 17.4 kWh, RWD, Single-Speed | Rs. 8.97 lakh |
Comet EV Exclusive | 17.3 kWh, RWD, Single-Speed | Rs. 9.56 lakh |
Blackstorm Edition | 17.4 kWh, RWD, Single-Speed | Rs. 7.63–9.99 lakh |
Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) options are available, which can reduce the initial cost to around Rs. 4.99 lakh, depending on the plan you choose. As is common for EVs, all the variants use a single-speed automatic transmission. At this price level, the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3 are also options for the buyers. We found the Excite variant to offer the best value of features and pricing. The higher Exclusive variants add incremental features and slight differences in battery, but the core driving experience remains the same.
Efficiency and ease of use in the city are key to the Comet EV's positioning. The battery capacity is between 17.3 and 17.4 kWh. It comes with a claimed range of 230 kilometres.
Observed Driving Range During Use
Battery | Claimed Range | City Range (Real-World) | Highway Range (Real-World) |
17.3 / 17.4 kWh | 230 km | 180–210 km | 160–180 km |
In urban conditions, regenerative braking helps increase the range of use. AC charging takes about seven hours with a 3.3 kW charger and about 3.5 hours with a 7.4 kW unit. However, DC fast charging is not available.
This is a limitation highlighted by Aashish Bharadwaj:
“Charging away from home is a serious drawback.”
MG Comet EV addresses the basics but does not try to introduce advanced driver assistance systems. On the structural front, the battery has gone through several validation procedures. There is currently no official Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP crash rating for the Comet EV.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The Comet EV has dual front airbags and standard seatbelt reminders. Rear passengers get three-point seatbelts and ISOFIX child seat anchors are mandatory as per norms of the segment. However, the overall passive safety package is still very basic compared to some of the newer models, which offer extra airbags.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
On the active safety front, the Comet EV has ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Control and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. Reverse parking sensors and a reverse camera are helpful for low-speed manoeuvres. While the essentials are covered for city use, buyers seeking higher levels of electronic driver assistance will have to look for other options.
The Comet EV is all about connectivity, compact usability and making electric mobility accessible to city buyers.
Infotainment and Interface
The centre of the dashboard is dominated by a dual 10.25-inch floating screen setup. One screen is used as the touchscreen infotainment system and the other is a fully digital instrument cluster. This twin display layout makes the cabin look more advanced than is normally expected in this segment.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, along with Bluetooth for calls and audio, but these are wired and not wireless. The system has built-in navigation, more than 100 voice commands, and a four-speaker audio system. In day-to-day use, we found the interface to be smooth and intuitive, with large, clear graphics.
As Shams observes, “MG has tried to keep it really light so that it appeals to the modern, youthful crowd.”
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
We found that the convenience package is sufficient for an urban EV. Electrically adjustable ORVMs and power windows make everyday living more convenient. Steering-mounted controls and keyless entry (on higher trims) make the cabin feel more complete. However, features like rear AC vents and wireless charging are not provided. These omissions reinforce the fact that the Comet is intended as a commuter for the city, not a feature-laden family car.

The MG Comet EV has an official boot capacity of around 350-litres but do bear in mind that these are achieved by folding the rear seats. When all the seats are being used, the storage space is minimal and can only accommodate laptop bags or charging cables. For larger suitcases, it is necessary to fold the rear seats.
Shams describes it bluntly: “The Comet gets negligible boot space.”
That assessment speaks to the fact that although the number looks reasonable on paper, the usable layout is limited in a standard four-seat configuration. The tailgate is top-hinged in typical hatchback fashion and the height of the loading lip is manageable for urban use. For city errands and short weekend trips, the space available is workable, but it is not designed to serve as a primary load carrier.
The Comet EV is based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, and it has a rear-wheel-drive motor setup. It has a power of about 41-42 bhp and 110 Nm torque, coupled with a battery pack of 17.3-17.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The discharge pattern is predictable in city use.
As Shams explains,
“The range is real-time, it is linear, and that really impresses you and gives you the confidence that this car will last.” That linear battery behaviour adds reassurance for first-time EV buyers.
The suspension tuning is typical of small, city-centred EVs. In this sense, it is aiming for balanced comfort rather than sporty handling or high-speed composure.
He further adds,
“Ride quality is not exactly out of the world, but it doesn’t disappoint you either.” The tuning remains honest and urban-focused.
City Driving
At low speeds, the Comet EV is very easy to handle. The steering is light and the small size makes it a breeze to manoeuvre in narrow lanes. The power and torque figures are modest on paper, but in reality, they feel adequate.
As Shams notes,
“The power and torque figures are sufficient to give you the thrust you’re looking for in most situations.” The motor response ensures what he describes as “a rather peppy drive.”
Its tight turning circle further helps to improve usability. With a 4.2-metre radius, "it really comes in handy", especially if you need to manoeuvre through heavy traffic, park in narrow spaces or squeeze between closely parked vehicles. The overall experience in the city is laidback and predictable, which is in line with its intended purpose.
Highway Driving
On highways, the Comet EV is stable up to about 80-90 kmph. It is not tuned for high-speed cruising. The top speed is restricted to about 100 kmph, reinforcing its urban focus. At higher speeds, the car is not disturbed, but going on long-distance touring is not the priority. That said, body control and power output make it more suitable for shorter stretches on highways rather than longer distances between cities.

As Shams mentions,
“You can make your manoeuvres even at decently high speeds and still have the confidence to do that.”
The MG Comet EV is available in several variants, all of which are powered by the same battery and motor configuration, and the feature additions vary with each version. The progression goes logically from Executive to Excite to Exclusive. The "FC" variants represent support for faster AC charging options, while the Blackstorm edition is more concerned with styling enhancements than mechanical changes. For the majority of private urban buyers, the mid-range variants deliver the best of technology and value.
Variant | Battery/Motor | Key Additions |
Executive | 17.3 kWh | Base technology package |
Excite | 17.3 kWh | Adds screen and additional features |
Excite FC | 17.4 kWh | Fast AC charging support |
Exclusive | 17.3 kWh | Higher tech and comfort features |
Exclusive FC | 17.4 kWh | Top features with fast AC charging |
Blackstorm Edition | 17.4 kWh | Cosmetic theme upgrades |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
Even in the top variants, the Comet EV does not offer:
- DC fast charging (only AC 3.3 kW / 7.4 kW options)
- Rear AC
- Cruise control
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or advanced ADAS
- Six airbags (typically dual airbags)
- Seat height adjusters
- Spare wheel
These omissions highlight its positioning as a compact, city-focused electric commuter as opposed to a fully-equipped long-distance or safety-focused premium offering.
The choice here is not between battery packs or motor outputs. It is between variants, charging capability and preferences in terms of features. As Shams Raza Naqvi puts it, "It's quirky, it's unique and it's electric and clean." The Comet is different in many respects. That positioning is what defines the car as it is not attempting to be a conventional hatchback alternative, but a compact, city-focused mobility solution.
Best for Pure Budget Urban Use: Executive
If your number one priority is to get into the EV space at the lowest possible cost, the Executive variant covers the essentials. It has the full powertrain and range capability, but features remain basic. For short daily commutes, office runs and intra-city errands, this variant is functionally adequate.
Best Value for Daily City Driving: Excite
The Excite is a meaningful addition of comfort and infotainment upgrades over the base version. We found this to be the balanced option for private urban ownership. It seems more complete in day-to-day use without pushing the price too close to the top trims. If the speed of charging at home is important, then the Excite FC comes into play, because it supports faster 7.4 kW AC charging over the standard 3.3 kW unit.
Best for Feature-Rich Urban Ownership: Exclusive
The Exclusive variant is based on the Excite with an addition of more comfort and safety features such as rear camera support and electronic stability control. It does not affect the driving character or range, but it makes the convenience and cabin experience better. The Exclusive FC is for buyers who are looking for both the added equipment and faster AC charging capability.
Before deciding on aesthetics alone, it is worth keeping in mind the observation of Aashish Bharadwaj: "When the whole world is rushing towards SUVs, the Comet chooses comfort, convenience and ease over sheer road presence." The appeal here is not visual dominance, but urban simplicity.

The MG Comet EV is in a very specific niche with a compact, city-first electric car that is designed primarily for urban mobility. Buyers in this price bracket will often compare this to slightly larger electric hatchbacks that have more range and space. The most relevant alternatives are the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3. Both have larger batteries and more conventional hatchback proportions at a higher entry price. Here's how the Comet EV compares to its competitors:
Model | Motor / Battery | Power / Torque | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
MG Comet EV | 17.3 kWh | 41.42 bhp / 110 Nm | Affordable city-first urban EV | Rs. 7.5 – Rs. 10.0 lakh |
Tata Tiago EV | 24–30 kWh | 73.7–83.8 bhp / 114 Nm | Higher range and everyday usability | Rs. 8.0 – Rs. 12.0 lakh |
Citroen eC3 | 29.2 kWh | 56.2 bhp / 143 Nm | Larger EV with better long-distance practicality | Rs. 10.9 – Rs. 13.5 lakh |
Which Urban EV Should You Choose?
- Choose the MG Comet EV if you want the most affordable electric car focused on city commuting, easy parking and connected technology.
- Choose the Tata Tiago EV if you need a higher range, more usable cabin space and a more conventional hatchback layout.
- Choose the Citroen eC3 if you want a larger EV with better practicality for longer daily runs.
Pros
- Compact dimensions with excellent urban manoeuvrability
- Affordable entry into electric mobility
- i-SMART connected features and digital interface
- Faster 7.4 kW AC charging option on FC variants
Cons
- A single small battery limits highway usability
- Modest power output focused on urban driving
- No four-door version/two-door car only
- Basic safety feature set relative to bigger competitors
Verdict
The MG Comet EV is based on urban practicality. The battery and motor setup is the same for all variants, so it is a matter of equipment levels and charging capability. We found that its small footprint, light controls and predictable low-speed performance make it well-suited to dense city environments. It is not designed for long highway trips, nor does it try to compete with larger electric hatchbacks in terms of sheer space or power.
As Shams Raza Naqvi concludes, “This gadget on wheels has the potential to be a worthy urban mobility solution in the years to come.”
If your use is mostly short urban journeys and you want an affordable electric vehicle that has connected features, the Comet EV is a clear winner in this regard. For buyers who are looking for a better range and usability, larger EV hatchbacks in the segment may be more suitable.
