Budget segment has always been extremely popular among first time buyers wanting to upgrade from a two wheeler to a four wheeler. With new models defying the reign of Maruti Alto series, customers now have a diverse choice to opt from in the hatchback segment. So if you are planning to buy a new car that doesn't burn a hole in your pocket here is a list of cheapest hatchback cars available in India.

1) Tata Nano GenX
Nano GenX
(Tata Nano GenX)

Earmarked as the cheapest car in India, Tata Nano has undergone multiple revisions in a bid to appeal to the customers. Available in petrol and CNG fuel options, the hatchback houses a 624cc engine developing 38PS and 51Nm of torque mated to a five-speed manual transmission and an AMT unit available on select variants.

Price-Rs 2.07 lakh to Rs 3.04 lakh

2) Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

(Maruti Suzuki Alto 800)

Reprising the iconic 800 moniker, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 was launched in India in 2012 and has recently received cosmetic upgrades. Claiming to return 9 per cent increased fuel economy, the Alto 800 facelift derives power from the same 800cc engine that powered the preceding model. Among the various additions made to the hatchback, option for driver side airbag across line-up and provision for front fog lamps are some of the most significant changes made to the vehicle.

Price- Rs 2.49 lakh to Rs 3.76 lakh

3) Renault Kwid

(Renault Kwid)

Launched last year in India, Renault Kwid has emerged as a strong contender in the budget segment. With SUV like stance, some segment best features and fuel economy over 25km/l, Kwid has been able to defy the dominance of Alto. Under the hood it houses a 800cc petrol engine producing 54PS which comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission unit. Rivalling the likes of Alto K10, Kwid will soon receive a 1000cc engine and an AMT unit as well.

Price- Rs 2.62 lakh to Rs 3.67 lakh

4) Tata Tiago
Tata Tiago
(Tata Tiago)

The global mid-size hatchback from Tata Motors is based on the tried and tested Indica platform but unlike previous offerings from the home grown auto maker, Tata Tiago is styled in tandem with rivals. The big surprise is the interior styling and a host of connectivity features that give it an edge over competitors. Mated to the conventional five-speed manual transmission, the hatchback is offered with a 1.2 litre Revotron petrol and 1.05 litre Revotorq diesel engine.

Price- Rs 3.20 lakh to Rs 5.54 lakh

5) Datsun GO
Datsun Go
(Datsun GO)

Datsun GO hatchback was the first product from Nissan’s low cost brand for the Indian market. Relatively larger than rivals in the segment, the hatchback misses out on some of the crucial features, but what really comes for the rescue of the hatchback is the 1.2 litre 68bhp engine mated to a five-speed manual offering pretty decent run on the go.

Price-Rs 3.25 lakh to Rs 4.13 lakh

6) Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

(Maruti Suzuki Alto K10)

Undoubtedly the most favoured small car in India, Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 has had a smooth run so far. Available in petrol and CNG variants, the hatchback derives power from a 998cc K10B engine offering 68PS in petrol mode and 59PS in CNG mode. Transmission choices include a manual and an AMT unit making it some of the few cars in budget segment to offer auto gear shift.
