car&bike Expert Take

“The Maruti Suzuki Celerio makes a strong case for itself as an easy-to-live-with, everyday runabout. It has exceptional fuel efficiency and excellent ride quality over outright visual flair. Its vast boot and sorted chassis are highly practical for first-time buyers and budget commuters alike.”

The new-generation Maruti Suzuki Celerio has finally hit showroom floors in 2026, and undoubtedly, it has some massive shoes to fill over the coming years, considering the previous generation sold well over 5.9 lakh units. The newest iteration now sits on the fifth-gen Heartect platform and is visibly longer and wider than the outgoing model. But we also noticed the roofline is slightly shorter now.
Even though this hatchback charms you with its highly refined nature, class-leading boot space, and excellent ride quality, it does not quite go the extra mile. While it justifies a solid evolution of the nameplate, adding a few more premium features and providing a clearer focus on safety would have made it an undisputed champion in its class.

The initial launch of this car was checked out by Ameya Naik, from whom we have taken a few insights to help you understand how this car still holds up in India’s automotive market, and how it squares off against some capable competitors.

Pros

  • Phenomenal 25 kmpl+ fuel efficiency
  • Class-leading 313-litre boot space
  • Light clutch with short, crisp manual throws
  • Nicely weighted steering feel

Cons

  • AMT takes a moment to react during overtakes
  • Lacks adjustable headrests
  • Missing LED daytime running lights
  • Cabin borrows parts from cheaper models

Verdict

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is an honest, frugal, and incredibly practical runabout, ditching the boxy aesthetic often found in this segment for a more youthful design. The next-gen K-Series engine lacks outright top-end grunt. Still, it easily compensates by being the most fuel-efficient petrol car in the country, and is a remarkably sorted package for city commuting.

Still, minor niggles remain. There are no adjustable headrests, and it’s hard to accept this when the cheaper Wagon R offers them, and most cars at this price range attempt to give LED DRLs nowadays. But ultimately, if you want a fuss-free daily driver with minimal running costs without caring much for these left-out features, the Celerio gets the job done without any unnecessary drama.

Ameya concludes about the car,

“The new-gen Celerio charms you with its refinement, class-leading boot space, and excellent ride quality.”
