Expert Review on MINI Countryman C
car&bike Expert Take
"The third-generation MINI Countryman C gave up the brand’s signature compact dimensions by being more of a proper, practical family crossover instead. Purists will notice this version’s extra height the most, which has softened its iconic go-kart cornering abilities."
The new Countryman C has now grown in length, width and height, as it steps into India’s compact luxury SUV space. Locally built in India as the fully equipped ‘Favoured’ trim, this vehicle has a lot of sustainable materials. It gets a minimalist cabin design and comes with high-tech digital software on the inside.
Abhishek Nigam got behind the wheel in city traffic and out on the open highways to see if the reworked crossover still feels like an authentic MINI. He observes,
"The new Countryman C is bigger, more practical and packed with technology, but its quirky appeal comes with a few compromises."

Under the bonnet, the Countryman C relies on BMW Group’s updated 1.5-litre, 1,499 cc three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine.
Engine Specifications
Paired exclusively with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch automatic transmission, power is sent directly to the front wheels.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-Litre Three-Cylinder TwinPower Turbo Petrol (48-volt mild hybrid) |
| Power | 154 bhp (115 kW) |
| Torque | 240 Nm |
| Transmission | Seven-speed Steptronic Automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) |

City Driving
- In city driving, the Countryman C is quite agile for its expanded dimensions.
- You can effortlessly carry out quick overtakes or close traffic gaps in seconds.
- The seven-speed Steptronic transmission can feel a bit hesitant during heavy traffic.

Highway Driving
- Out on the highway, the 240 Nm of torque moves the vehicle past slower traffic safely.
- But sustained hard acceleration will let out a three-cylinder engine growl past 4,500 rpm.
- The transmission aptly carries out smoother shifts here compared to its city performance.
However, Abhishek notes,
“The engine is smooth enough, and the gearbox generally does a good job of keeping the car moving, but 154 bhp doesn't sound particularly generous for an SUV in this price bracket.”
The exterior design has a modern, clean aesthetic that MINI calls "Charismatic Simplicity".
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | MINI Countryman C | Mercedes-Benz GLA | Audi Q3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,447 mm | 4,412 mm | 4,482 mm |
| Width | 1,843 mm | 1,834 mm | 1,849 mm |
| Height | 1,661 mm | 1,616 mm | 1,588 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,692 mm | 2,729 mm | 2,680 mm |
| Kerb Weight | 1,520 - 1,545 kg | 1,570 kg | 1,700 kg |
| Ground Clearance | 190 mm | 160 mm | 170 mm |
Build Quality & Materials
The vehicle’s solid build quality feels typically European. The doors have noticeable weight, and panel shut lines around the bonnet and clamshell tailgate are uniform. Inside, MINI has moved away from real leather and chrome, offering sustainable recycled knitted textiles and soft Vescin synthetic upholstery instead.

The exterior styling sticks to MINI’s recognised proportions.
At the same time, Abhishek notes,
"The latest Countryman has a much more upright and squared-off appearance."

Front Profile
- An octagonal front grille sits over the upright nose.
- Angular adaptive LED headlights replace the traditional round units.
- A clean front bumper design integrates subtle lower air ducts and a satin silver faux skid plate.

Side Profile
- The crossover rides on 19-inch ‘Kaleido Spoke’ two-tone alloy wheels.
- Flush-fitting door handles align with the sheet metal to improve aerodynamic efficiency.
- There are black roof rails, along with a black finish on the floating roof and mirror caps.

Rear Profile
- Upright, vertical LED tail lamps sit flush with the rear corners.
- The clean tailgate carries prominent 'COUNTRYMAN' lettering.
- The rugged rear bumper has a satin silver diffuser element and black corner mouldings.
This vehicle’s cabin sticks to minimalism the most.
Cabin Layout and Quality
- The dashboard creates a warm, lounge-like feel.
- The driver looks through a chunky sports steering wheel with heating support.
- The world’s first 240 mm circular OLED touchscreen display sits on the dashboard.
- Below the round screen is a retro-styled toggle bar with different switches for different uses.
Seating Comfort

Front Row
- The front occupants sit on supportive JCW Sport seats.
- Both front seats get full electric adjustment with memory settings.
- The driver’s seat also includes a massage function to soothe lower back fatigue.
Second Row
- The reclinable rear bench can also slide forward and backwards by up to 130 mm.
- Two six-foot passengers can sit comfortably with adequate knee room.
- Rear passengers enjoy dedicated air conditioning vents, dual USB Type-C charging ports, etc.

Features That Improve Daily Use
- Harman Kardon Hi-Fi audio
- Head-Up display
- Digital Key Plus turns your compatible smartphone or Apple watch into a key

Observed Fuel Efficiency
| Engine & Powertrain | ARAI-Claimed Mileage | User-Reported City Mileage | User-Reported Highway Mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol (Seven-speed Automatic) | 15.92 kmpl | 10 - 12 kmpl | 14 - 16 kmpl |
The Countryman C has earned a five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
- Six airbags come fitted as standard equipment.
- Every seat features a three-point seatbelt with pre-tensioners.
- There are ISOFIX child seat anchorages on the rear seats as well.
- Other features like Active Pedestrian Protection and Intelligent Emergency Call are present.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
- The active safety suite has Front Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning.
- Some other elements include an Attentiveness Assistant and a Speed Warning system.
- There’s the Parking Assistant Plus, the HD 360-degree camera and the Reversing Assistant.
The cabin is dominated by minimalist, screen-centric technology.
Infotainment and Interface
- The centrepiece of the interior is the 240 mm circular OLED display.
- You can use the ‘Eight Experience Modes’ to unlock Core, Green and Go-Kart modes.
- Then there’s also the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant, responding to voice commands.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- Pneumatic cushions in the driver's backrest offer soothing massage cycles.
- A massive dual-pane panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light.
- The Digital Key Plus uses ultra-wideband technology to allow you to unlock or start the car.
The Countryman C provides 505 litres of luggage volume behind the second row. Its loading floor is broad and flat, easily taking in two large hard-shell suitcases alongside multiple soft travel bags.
Also, since the second-row seats can slide forward and backwards by up to 130 mm, you can extract extra boot volume or passenger knee room as needed. And when you fold the rear seatbacks flat in a 40:20:40 arrangement, the luggage space opens up to 1,450 litres.

Underneath the body, MINI’s traditional handling agility, but comfort has been equally thought of.
City Driving
- The car’s 190 mm ground clearance is enough for clearing most city speed breakers.
- The steering is light and accurate, and the 360-degree camera makes manoeuvres simple.
- The large 19-inch alloy wheels will make you feel sharp road bumps during slow, city speeds.
Highway Driving
- Here, the Countryman C feels firmly tied to the road.
- The wheelbase keeps the chassis completely stable at 100 kmph.
- Flick the toggle switch into Go-Kart mode, and the throttle sharpens up.
Abhishek says,
“It is reassuring at highway speeds and has good road-holding.”

MINI keeps the buying process simple with one variant for the Indian market.
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|
Countryman C (Favoured Trim) | 1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | Circular OLED screen, 19-inch alloys, Harman Kardon audio, massage driver seat, panoramic roof | Lifestyle buyers who want luxury space without losing brand personality |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- Front-seat cooling ventilation
- An All-Wheel Drive (ALL4) system
- A diesel engine option for interstate travellers
Because MINI offers the Countryman C only in the Favoured trim, your choice of owning one is left to the colour schemes available.
If you love the heritage of the badge, British Racing Green or Smokey Green combined with the standard Jet Black roof and mirror caps can feel like a sound combination. But if buyers want a bolder, more youthful aesthetic to draw attention on city streets, they can go for the Chilli Red paint, in which the 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels stand out.
Besides these, if you prefer an understated, executive look, Slate Blue or Nanuq White might feel like much more sensible choices.
The MINI Countryman C competes against traditional German rivals like the BMW X1 LWB, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3.
Model | Powertrains | Key Strengths | Ex-Showroom Price |
|---|---|---|---|
1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol | 240 mm circular OLED display, 190 mm ground clearance | Rs. 47.50 Lakh | |
1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol | Class-leading rear-seat legroom, 540-litre boot | Rs. 49.90 Lakh | |
1.3-Litre Turbo Petrol / 2.0-Litre Diesel | Punchy diesel option, plush cabin materials, brand prestige | Rs. 51.80 - 55.00 Lakh | |
2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | Standard Quattro all-wheel drive, punchy performance | Rs. 43.67 Lakh |
- Choose the MINI Countryman C if you want an unmistakable exterior design with a unique circular OLED on the dash, high ground clearance and an overall engaging personality.
- Choose the BMW X1 LWB if you spend your weekdays in the rear seat often and want the longest rear legroom in the segment.
- Choose the Mercedes-Benz GLA if you travel a lot and will definitely benefit from the long-range fuel efficiency of a diesel engine.
- Choose the Audi Q3 if you want the extra punch of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that also has all-weather, all-wheel-drive grip.
Pros
- The distinctive road presence of a Mini, with its signature grille, lamps and silhouette is extremely appealing.
- Large and boxier proportions lend it an authentic SUV stance along with generous rear legroom, and a large, usable 505-litre boot.
- Its rear bench slides back/forth by 130 mm and backrests can recline up to 25 degrees to allow passengers adjust between knee room and boot space.
- A highlight its 240 mm circular super-clear OLED display with attractive graphics and essentials like wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
- It has distinctive cabin elements like the knitted recycled dashboard trim, handsome Vescin Vintage Brown JCW sports seats, and more.
- There’s a panoramic glass roof, 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and driver’s seat massage function.
Cons
- Its 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol (mild-hybrid) engine offers relaxed and progressive cruising, rather than the addictive performance associated with the Cooper S or older 2.0-litre petrols.
- It misses front seat ventilation despite getting powered sports seats and driver massage.
- The ride quality is firm due to the 19-inch wheels with low-profile tyres.
- Rear seat lacks appropriate under-thigh support for taller passengers.
- It looks visually more compact, from certain angles, when compared to German luxury SUVs like the Audi Q3.
- The narrow rear window makes the back row feel less airy.
Verdict
The new Mini Countryman C is the most mature, practical, and family-friendly avatar of the Countryman yet. It has grown into a larger SUV and combined with a sliding rear bench, 505-litre boot, and localised assembly pricing of Rs 47.50 lakh, this show-stopper effortlessly functions as a primary luxury family runabout without losing its playful British character.
Abhishek Nigam drove the Mini Countryman C in Mumbai and pointed out that, "If outright performance, a more traditional luxury ambience or an understated design are your priorities, the German rivals have compelling arguments. But if you want something that feels different every time you walk towards it, has a cabin that refuses to look conventional and still offers enough space and practicality to serve as a family car, the Countryman makes a strong case for itself."
We agree that its engine is not as aggressive as Mini’s have come to be, and the firm ride may not be to everybody’s liking, but if you are bored by the predictable formula offered by the GLA or Q3 and need to standout, the Mini Countryman C is certainly the option to plonk for.
MINI Countryman C Mileage
MINI Countryman C mileage is 14 KM/L as per ARAI The Automatic Petrol engine has a mileage of 14.3 KM/L.
| Fuel Type | Transmission | Mileage | City Mileage | Highway Mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Automatic | 14.3 KM/L | 530 KM/L | 530 KM/L |
