What's New?

The BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine is finally on sale in India with pricing starting at Rs. 54.5 lakh for the base 330Li Luxury Line variant and going all the way up to Rs. 56.9 lakh for the range topping 330Li M Sport trim, while the 320Ld Luxury Line diesel trim has been priced at Rs. 55.9 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, India). Those aware of BMW’s nomenclature already know that ‘L’ in the trim line refers to the long wheelbase and that’s exactly what this new 3 Series is. It is the long wheelbase version of the existing BMW 3 Series sedan and replaces the 3 Series GT in the Bavarian carmaker’s range.

The BMW 3 Series GL has a 110 mm longer wheelbase compared to the space between the wheels of standard car and it will be sold alongside the standard wheelbase model. And those extra muscles have been added gracefully in its rear door. The wheelbase of the car is 2961 mm, while the overall length is 4,819 mm which is also up by 110 mm At 1,827 mm it is exactly as wide as the regular sedan but a height of 1,463 mm makes it is 28 mms taller. It is the longest and most spacious model in its class and is expected to add to BMW’s overall volumes, a strategy which we have already seen working for Mercedes-Benz with the E-Class LWB.

Now that added wheelbase makes for 43 mm more legroom on the inside and that’s the only change when compared to the standard car as other than that it remains pretty much the same. You continue to get stuff like the 12.3-inch instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch screen give it a futuristic appeal, the latter gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. You also get features like wireless charging, air purifier, three-zone climate control, connected car tech and a panoramic sunroof. Even the cabin layout remains unchanged.

Under the hood, you get 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, twin-turbo petrol and diesel engines that churn out 190 bhp and 258 bhp respectively. Both engines also put out around 400 Nm of peak torque and are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine does not have any direct rival in India, it will continue to rival the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4 and Jaguar XE among others.

Pros

  • Looks like an executive sedan
  • The long wheelbase really provides a lot of space
  • The 3 Series GL does not have much competition
icon

Cons

  • Could have been generous with features
  • Suspension is a bit taut
  • The 3 GL misses out on some creature comforts like rear seat controls for the media
Verdict

India is the first right hand drive market anywhere in the world to get the car and of course the focus here is on the extra space inside the cabin, specifically for people in the rear seat. The 3GL is promising to offer more comfort at price which may not be beyond your reach and as a chauffeur driven car it is right up there in the segment. The 3 series sedan starts at ₹ 42.30 lakh (ex-showroom). In comparison this long wheelbase model is expected to be priced between ₹ 50 and Rs 54 lakh.

The Complete Package

When one thinks of a vehicle that exudes both elegance and performance in the entry-level sports sedan arena, it’s difficult to overlook the BMW 3 Series. It has, in essence, created an orchestra of automotive prowess where each feature plays its part seamlessly, drawing admiration from competitors and car enthusiasts alike. In the face-off against established players like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Volvo S60, and Audi A4, the 3 Series has continually demonstrated its ability to evolve while maintaining its core identity. Enter the 2023 BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine – a refreshed chapter in this ongoing symphony. Not only does it continue its legacy, but it also adds newfound finesse with updates that are both aesthetic and functional. We delve deep into the sedan to witness firsthand how BMW has made with it..

Subtlety is the hallmark of luxury, and this stands true in the revamped 2023 BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine. With a whisper rather than a shout, the new design nudges forward its aesthetic sensibility while retaining its iconic sports sedan persona. Let’s begin with its façade – BMW has intelligently reshaped the twin circular headlamps, giving them a slimmer and more focused appearance. The result? A gaze that is not just striking but intricately detailed, echoing the brand’s emphasis on precision. The signature BMW grille also takes a new turn. Far from the monstrous grilles we’ve seen on many cars from the brand, this one is tastefully sized. Complementing the grill is the M-Sport package that layers in a gloss-black finish on the front bumpers, a subtle but effective nod to the sporty temperament of the vehicle.

If the front end is a poetic introduction, the overall body is an epic. The Gran Limousine flaunts short overhangs and a long bonnet that nicely align with its horizontal lines and flared rear wheel arches. The car straddles the line between sporty zest and luxury sedan, which makes it stand out in a crowd.

The cabin of the 2023 3 Series Gran Limousine has undergone a significant overhaul, featuring a state-of-the-art, fully digital curved display—a seamless blend of a 12.3-inch instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. This doesn’t just add a wow factor but also improves usability with iDrive 8.0. While the interior maintains its spaciousness, the redesigned center console and intuitive iDrive controller add a minimalist touch, making the interior not just a space of comfort but also technologically advanced.

The new 3 Series seems to be making a statement that not only should a car be a thrill to drive, but it should also be a safe haven for its occupants. Standard safety features are beefed up to include a comprehensive suite that would put some high-end models to shame. For starters, it features six airbags. But BMW doesn’t stop there.

The introduction of an attentive monitor and emergency braking systems as standard features reveals how this vehicle is ahead of the curve, even in safety innovation. With front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, auto hold, and electric parking brakes, BMW leaves no room for error, whether you’re navigating through chaotic city streets or cruising on an open highway. The Cornering Brake Control is the unsung hero in this safety lineup. Often overlooked but crucial for high-speed cornering, this system manages braking pressure, ensuring stability when turning at high speeds.

Unchanged from its predecessor, the engine options offer both petrol and diesel variants. The vehicle’s eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission is the invisible hand that expertly shifts gears, creating a blend of power and efficiency. Whether it’s a rapid sprint from 0-100 kmph or cruising on the highway, the 3 Series Gran Limousine never feels lacking in either aspect.

BMW has found the sweet spot between agility and stability. The precise steering, excellent body control, and ample grip make the 3 Series a delight to drive. Even at high speeds, the car remains firmly planted, navigating through corners with grace and assurance. However, for those looking for a smoother long-distance journey, the tires may warrant a closer look.

With prices starting at Rs. 57.90 lakh for the petrol version and Rs. 59.50 lakh for the diesel, the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine sits comfortably in its segment. The inclusion of the more potent M340i offers potential buyers a taste of performance without shelling out for an M3.

Choosing the right variant of the 2023 BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine can be likened to handpicking the perfect ingredients for a gourmet meal, with each option dramatically shaping your driving experience. The base model Is an ode to minimalistic elegance, offering essential performance and safety features for those who appreciate BMW’s core engineering. On the other hand, the Sport Line spices up the basics with sportier aesthetics and an enhanced tech suite, ideal for those who seek a dynamic edge in their daily commute. The Luxury Line serves as a rolling sanctuary of comfort and opulence, featuring upgraded upholstery, ambient lighting, and high-end driver assistance technologies. For the uncompromising enthusiast, the M Sport is a dream come true, blending racetrack performance with unparalleled luxury and style. Ultimately, the perfect variant is not merely a collection of specs, but an extension of your lifestyle and personal preferences, making the choice an Intensely personal one.

The closest competition, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, starts at a similar price point but can climb higher for its diesel variant. Audi’s A4 is a more budget-friendly alternative, albeit lacking in some of the BMW’s bells and whistles. Unfortunately, Volvo’s S60 has faded from the scene, leaving the 3 Series Gran Limousine as a compelling option in this market segment. This 2023 model is a well-rounded vehicle, merging luxury, safety, and performance into a compelling package. While it faces some competition, its features and options makes it a sensible yet exhilarating choice for potential buyers. So, whether it’s for daily commuting or the occasional adrenaline rush, this BMW variant has got you covered.
