car&bike Expert Take

"The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga remains the best-selling MPV in India as it fulfils the basic needs of a family without any unnecessary complication. It places space, usability and efficiency above any pretensions of excess or luxury styling. The availability of factory-fitted CNG and a refined automatic transmission are further factors in its role as a practical everyday seven-seater.”

In the Indian market, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga occupies a very well-defined space as an affordable three-row MPV made primarily for families who need space without stretching their budget. Since the introduction of the second generation in 2018, we have seen it continue to be a strong monthly seller. It suits both private buyers and fleet operators who are more focused on seating capacity and running costs than outright performance.
This Maruti Suzuki Ertiga expert review has been compiled on the basis of extensive road testing by the car&bike team, as seen in our YouTube video featuring Kingshuk Dutta. Additional perspective is provided by Cyrus Dhabhar’s detailed analysis on his blog, in which he analyses the Ertiga's market positioning and value proposition in the MPV segment.
At an ex-showroom price that starts in the mid-Rs. 8 lakh range and goes up to around Rs. 13 lakh (depending on variant and fuel type), the Ertiga beats many larger MPVs at their own game, while providing genuine three-row practicality. Within its own ecosystem, the Toyota Rumion is mechanically the same, but the XL6 is its more premium counterpart under Maruti's NEXA channel. However, in our assessment, the Ertiga remains the driver of the bulk of volumes. We think this is because of its balanced pricing, broader spread of variants and their positioning as a practical family mover rather than a lifestyle-focused product.

Pros

  • Spacious seven-seat configuration
  • Strong fuel efficiency, especially CNG
  • Flexible seating layout
  • Practical storage solutions

Cons

  • Small 209-litre boot with all seats up
  • Infotainment feels basic against rivals
  • Suspension is slightly firm when empty
  • No diesel option

Verdict

In our overall assessment, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is a dependable and efficient seven-seater that is built for practicality. It does not attempt to be sporty or overtly premium. Instead, it concentrates on predictable driving manners, manageable ownership costs, and day-to-day usability.

Cyrus Dhabhar concludes:

“If you’ve been waiting to decide whether to buy the new Ertiga, our answer is a definitive and thumping yes.”

He further adds:

“And if you're worried about your next Uber or Ola being the same car as yours, Maruti Suzuki has made it clear that this new generation is aimed at the private market… at least for now.”

If you prioritise larger screens and feature-heavy cabins, some rivals may appear more attractive. But if your requirements centre around seating flexibility, ease of driving, and long-term peace of mind, the Ertiga remains one of the most sensible MPVs in its segment.
