Tesla & Ford Have Record Deliveries Despite Global Semiconductor Shortage

Tesla has yet again bucked the market trends and scored record car deliveries in Q2 of 2021. It joins Ford which also reported higher than expected deliveries as the global automotive industry struggles from an industry-wide shortage of semiconductors. 

Tesla managed to deliver 201,250 cars during the period overtaking its previous record which was set in January. Tesla's chief executive and co-founder Elon Musk was expectedly very happy about the achievement considering the industry-wide struggles and the increased competition the US-based automaker faced in recent times because of the EV boom which Tesla triggered. 

"Congrats Tesla Team on over 200,000 cars built & delivered in Q2, despite many challenges!!" Musk said on Twitter. 

The EV boom is also benefiting Detroit legend Ford which became the latest automaker to have higher than expected sales in Q2. It managed to deliver 475,327 cares which up by up to 10 per cent from the same time last year. 

With over 100,000 reservations Ford's transformation to an EV major is well on its way 

While this was an overall year-on-year improvement for the carmaker, it did witness a downturn from last June with sales down by 27 per cent. One of the main catalysts for this decline was a major decline in the sale of its staple F-150 pickup truck which is the best selling vehicle of its kind in the US. This drop was triggered by a combination of the global semiconductor shortage and the launch of its new F-150 Lightning, which is an electric version of the iconic Ford truck. 

Ford, however, improved its margins on the vehicles - an improvement of $6400. Ford also revealed that it had managed a whopping 100,000 reservations for the new F-150 Lightning which was launched in May and endorsed by even President Joe Biden.
