The Suzuki RM-Z450 is also a purpose-built, off-road and motocross bike like the RM-Z250, but with a bigger engine, and higher-spec components. The RM-Z450 has very good low-end torque, a flat overall torque curve, and delivers fast throttle response for competition use. Powered by a 449 cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, the high compression engine is mated to a five- speed constant mesh gearbox. With a seat height of 960 mm, the RM-Z450 is a tall bike, although considering its motocross and off-road credentials, ground clearance is 330 mm. Kerb weight is just
112 kg.
Getting a good start at a motocross event is crucial to winning, and the latest version of the Suzuki Holeshot Assist Control (S-HAC) is an integral part of the RM-Z range. The updated three-stage S-HAC assesses throttle position, and gear selection, and then adjusts ignition timing to optimise engine
output for fast launches. The new version of the S-HAC offers a choice of three settings, which can be selected via a handlebar-mounted switch. The “A” mode is programmed for hard surfaces, such as concrete, clay or hard packed dirt, and “B” mode for normal dirt conditions. Riders can also select
the “Off” setting to retain standard ignition timing.
The Suzuki RM-Z450 comes with all-new Showa front and rear suspension. At the front, is a 49 mm Showa coil spring fork, and at the rear is a Showa balance free rear cushion shock, which is said to share technology with the new Suzuki GSX-R1000R superbike. Light wheel rims and new Bridgestone Battlecross X30 tyres maximise grip and offer superior off-road control in a wide range of track conditions. A standard, fat Renthal aluminium handlebar offers more strength and less vibration than standard size aluminium handlebars. Like the younger model, the Suzuki RM-Z450 is also not road legal and is specifically designed for off-road and competition use.
