Toyota Fortuner Legender Review: car&bike Expert Take
"It might not make sense on paper, but these small yet meaningful updates do make the Fortuner slightly better to live with, without taking away what fans love most about it." Seshan Vijayraghvan

For the past 17 years, the Fortuner has been an extremely popular full-size SUV in India since its introduction in 2009. Based on our market analysis and the exhaustive product testing conducted by our team, it is clear that the Fortuner has been the go-to vehicle for consumers seeking a full-fledged, body-on-frame SUV. As car&bike expert Seshan Vijayraghvan points out, “The Toyota Fortuner is one of those rare models that have built lasting loyalty among SUV buyers in India. It is a name that has outgrown its brand and continues to set the benchmark in the segment.”
In 2016, the Fortuner entered its second generation with a major redesign that included improved styling, additional features, and a higher-quality interior. Now, we have another major evolution of the Fortuner Legender.

The Fortuner Legender has always been the more stylish version of the standard Fortuner, with a focus on urban use. The Toyota Fortuner Legender was launched in India in January 2021.
There are not only exterior updates but also plenty of interior enhancements. You will see the new, sharper front-end styling that distinguishes the Legender, plus the unique finishes that set it apart.
The Toyota Fortuner Legender range is refreshingly logic-driven. These variants are structured around drivetrain configurations and genuine capability. In our experience, this makes the buying journey far simpler. We have found that customers typically select their version based on real-world lifestyle needs rather than just superficial trim differences.
Powertrain Options
We still have the same 2.8-litre, 201 bhp, 500 Nm diesel engine we have come to know well. And there is nothing wrong with that. It is a well-priced engine, and everyone knows how comfortable it is for cruising on the highway with plenty of power to spare. At the top of the lineup, we have the Neo Drive variant. Replacing the conventional alternator, the Neo Drive features a belt-integrated starter generator and a lithium-ion battery.

Base vs Top Model Positioning
Even at the entry level with the 4x2 AT, the Toyota Fortuner Legender provides the essential luxury features while retaining full mechanical capability. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Neo Drive top model adds mild-hybrid tech and a new Multi-Terrain System, preserving the Fortuner's rugged, mechanical soul.
The story of the Toyota Fortuner Legender performance is one of calculated force and practical power. In everyday driving, particularly in city traffic, you will enjoy considerable refinement from this system, as it provides reduced lag, gradual acceleration, and a modest efficiency improvement. Seshan Vijayraghvan observes, "The system replaces the traditional alternator with a belt-integrated starter generator powered by a 48V lithium-ion battery. As a result, acceleration feels cleaner and quicker, especially at lower revs."
Standard Engine Behaviour
We have spent significant time with the diesel units and found they deliver exactly the kind of low-end torque we want in a vehicle like this. The Fortuner's torque remains as robust as ever, but its delivery has been improved. The transitions between start-stop cycles are smoother, the initial response is more gradual, and the low-speed handling in slow-moving traffic is much improved.
Performance Variant
The first part of our initial test drive yielded an acceleration time of around 11 seconds between 0 and 100 kmph. This is an acceptable performance, considering the vehicle's weight of around 2.8 tonnes. More importantly, it is not stressed by its own performance of accelerating to 100 kmph in 11 seconds. The mild-hybrid system smoothens out the initial turbo lag, adding a temporary boost at low revs.

During our structured test drives, the Toyota Fortuner Legender demonstrates remarkable behavioural consistency. The first thing that hits you about the Fortuner Legender's ride quality is how little it is affected by poor road conditions. The amount of wear and tear seen on the vehicle is minimal, no matter how many different roads you drive it upon.
Due to the high ground clearance, you can usually take high speeds over rough or poor surfaces. The Fortuner Legender can definitely take you anywhere you want at high speed. The 2WD version will suffice on most surfaces, but if you plan to drive in deep sand, snow, or muddy terrain, the 4WD system with the low ratio will work wonders.

Regarding off-road prowess, Seshan Vijayraghvan adds, "As part of the feature upgrades, the Neo Drive variants now also come with a Multi-Terrain System, which is another welcome addition in my books. The system complements the Fortuner’s capable 4x4 system and gives you measured power delivery depending on the terrain."
Observed ride and handling traits during our evaluation:
- The Multi-Terrain System effectively manages power delivery across 5 dedicated modes: Mud, Sand, Rock, Dirt, and Deep Snow.
- Body roll remains noticeable at speed but the vehicle stays very predictable.
- Steering is heavy and slow to respond, meaning turning requires more effort.
- Go-anywhere capability provides profound confidence on broken rural roads.
The Toyota Fortuner Legender does not try to look delicate or trendy. It stands out for its refined yet rugged appeal, with a stylish exterior that gives a premium feel. As a whole, the new Fortuner Legender design approach is not about creating a radically different look for the Fortuner, nor about adopting a new design perspective that provides a clean, sharp, modern appearance while continuing to build on the Fortuner's established image as a full-size SUV with premium aspirations. Every major element we see serves a functional role.
Core design principles we observed include:
- Enlarged front grille reinforces structural stance and road presence.
- High ground clearance of about 9.5 inches for technical trails.
- Practical detailing over decorative trim.
- Dual-tone roof that adds contrast and improves visibility.
The Toyota Fortuner Legender doesn’t try to look delicate or trendy. It stands out for its refined yet rugged appeal, with a stylish exterior that gives a premium feel.

Front Profile
- Enlarged Front Grille: The new enlarged Grille contributes to the vehicle's overall design impact and enhances its road presence and overall body stance.
- Aggressive Proportion of Grille: The large, trapezoidal grille dominates the front, giving it a strong appearance.
- LED Quad Headlamps: Four contemporary, high-fashion LED headlamps enhance the vehicle's premium appearance.
- LED Projector Headlamps: Sharp, purposeful, and high-performance as compared with traditional bulb-type headlamps.
- Modified Daytime Running Lamps: The addition of sleek, modernised LED DRLs gives the vehicle a distinctive appearance.
- Sequential Turn Indicators: Provides a premium touch with a sweeping motion rather than a traditional blinker.
- Redesigned Front Bumper: The modification includes a taller, sculpted front bumper for improved muscularity.
- Higher Mounting Front Bumper/SKID Plate: The redesigned front bumper and SKID Plate mounting will allow it to accommodate a higher approach angle and tackle uneven terrain.
- Reduced Size of Front Fog Lamps: Smaller and more integrated in vehicle design.
- Added Skid Plates: Increased ruggedness and enhanced vehicle strength with the addition of Silver Skid Plates.
Side Profile View
- Bold, daring SUVs, as they are tall and easily recognisable
- Height and ground clearance of about 9.5 Inches.
- Wheel Sizes are 4x4 18" Alloys, 4x2 Slightly Smaller Wheels
- Strong arch, wide open
- An above-average shoulder line makes the road presence look dominating.
- The dual-tone roof makes this vehicle more sporty, adds contrast, and improves visibility.
Rear Profile
- New Tail Lights with LEDs: A more defined, modern shine is the primary update to this vehicle’s rear profile.
- High Up Expanding Bumper: Solidifies the vehicle's durability and prepares it for off-road use.
- Write True Tough: This vehicle is functionally designed for SUV use, but it looks classy enough for city driving.
Dimension table
The Toyota Fortuner Legender is a full-size, Seven-seater SUV with impressive dimensions.
| Dimension | Fortuner Legender |
| Length | 4,795mm |
| Height | 1,835mm |
| Width | 1,855mm |
| Ground Clearance | 279mm |
| Wheel Base | 2,745mm |
| Kerb Weight | 2,180 kg |
The Toyota Fortuner Legender interior reflects clarity, durability, and function first. It has the same fundamental layout as the Toyota Fortuner, but in a different manner. The cabin has a dual-toned black-and-maroon colour scheme that adds style, making it appear sportier and a little different.

As car&bike reviewer Seshan Vijayraghvan notes, “Inside, the cabin remains largely the same. The Legender continues with dual-tone black and maroon upholstery, while the Fortuner Neo Drive gets an all-black theme.”

The dashboard does not have soft-touch surfaces, but it does include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette seating, and leatherette on the centre console.

Ambient lighting is well-integrated into the cabin and adds a sense of class to its overall look; however, the cabin primarily emphasises ruggedness rather than luxury. The cabin's construction is solid, giving confidence that this SUV will handle a variety of conditions.
Front Seats
Getting into the front seats can be difficult. While the side steps might assist some people in getting in, elderly passengers will still require help getting inside. Fortunately, inside the vehicle, you will be quite comfortable; the large, cushioned front seats will provide ample support for long-distance driving.
The commanding driving position instils confidence in drivers, providing a clear view of the road ahead and most traffic.

Second Row
When you move to the second row, there is plenty of space, and two passengers will be very comfortable. While three passengers can fit, it might feel too small on long-distance trips. We appreciate the ability to slide and recline because it gives us the flexibility to use all available space when the third row is not occupied. When seated, we can maximise available legroom by moving the second row as far back as possible, allowing us to sit cross-legged.
Although there is no sunroof, which could have helped create a larger sense of space, the overall sense of space is adequate and does not feel cramped inside the vehicle; this is very important in a three-row SUV.
Third Row
Accessing the third row is relatively easy with the second row's one-touch tumble function. Depending on how you use your vehicle, an adult could fit in the third row, though you would be sacrificing under-thigh support (for long-legged drivers) and knee positioning. The headroom is adequate; it is fine for children and good for short trips, but would be a compromise on long highway trips if adults are riding.
Storage and Practicality
The Fortuner Legender has provided the necessary functionality. There are bottle holders in all four doors, two glove boxes (the upper one with cooling), storage underneath the central armrest, and two cup holders tucked into the central console.
Rear passengers also have access to seat back pockets, a phone holder in the central tunnel and retractable cup holders built into the centre armrest. Hooks behind the front seats are very useful for day-to-day activities. Third-row passengers have only a small open storage area on the side trim, with limited space.
The new updates to the Toyota Fortuner Legender Neo drive have given it a better overall feel than before. The interior has not changed much. However, the 8-inch infotainment system does look a little dated. The display is not the clearest, is not quick to respond to inputs; both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connect via cables.
Seshan Vijayraghvan states, "A 360-degree camera is now part of the package, a long-pending addition. The camera quality isn't exceptional, likely due to the dated infotainment screen, but it works well."
Key Technology Highlights include
- Multi-terrain System optimising throttle and traction control across five modes.
- 11-speaker JBL audio system fitted to the higher-grade 4WD models.
- Wireless phone charging for front passengers.
- Dual-zone climate control with rear air vents.

Mileage: Around 14 kmpl.
According to ARAI, the Toyota Fortuner Legender mileage is 14.2 to 14.4 kmpl.
Powertrain | ARAI Mileage |
Diesel - Automatic (TC) (2755 cc) | 14.4 kmpl

Diesel - Manual (2755 cc) | 14.2 kmpl |
Mild Hybrid (Electric + Diesel) - Automatic (TC) (2755 cc) | 14.4 kmpl |
The first thing to note about the Toyota Fortuner Legender and its safety package is that Toyota has been consistent in offering the same core set of safety equipment across all Fortuner variants, regardless of drivetrain, so you get this core set of features regardless of which model you purchase.
All models come with seven airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control and traction control, hill-start and downhill assist control, and ISOFIX for mounting child seats.

This is a good foundation for ladder-frame SUV safety, but unfortunately, neither Global NCAP nor Bharat NCAP has tested the Fortuner Legender yet.
In addition to crash testing, the Fortuner Legender offers a variety of features, including a rear parking assist camera, rear parking sensors integrated with the Multi-Information Display (MID), front park assist, over-speed warning, an optional tire pressure monitor system (TPMS), and 4WD.
Once all rows are in place, the Toyota Fortuner Legender's boot space is decent. Therefore, if you want to take seven adults and their full-size luggage to the airport, you will need to have your strategy in place.
However, there is a silver lining. The third row of seats folds evenly (50:50), and you can either lift them and fold them upside down or store them neatly to the side of the boot. Once you do this, you will have a whole new perspective on the boot's usability. It will become very easy to transport large suitcases, groceries, or supplies for weekend trips.
The second row also folds in a 60:40 split. Items like long furniture, appliances, and moving boxes are all reasonable and comfortable to transport.
The first thing that hits you about the Fortuner Legender's ride quality is how little it is affected by poor road conditions. The SUV exhibits remarkable durability, regardless of the terrain.
Due to the high ground clearance, you can usually take high speeds over rough/poor surfaces. The Fortuner Legender can definitely take you anywhere you want at high speed.
The 2WD version will suffice on most surfaces, but if you plan to drive in deep sand, snow, or muddy/slushy terrain, the 4WD system with the low ratio will work wonders.

Although the steering is heavy and slow to respond, turning requires more effort. The vehicle has noticeable body roll at speed, but remains very predictable. What you end up with is a well-built vehicle with a go-anywhere capability you can trust.
The Toyota Fortuner Legender is indeed offered as a premium single top-end trim in markets like India. Still, it comes with distinct drivetrain configurations, primarily differentiated, which cater to different driving needs. Among the variants, the Toyota Fortuner Legender base model is the 4x2 AT.
| Variant | Drivetrain | Transmission | Off Road Focus | Price (ex-showroom) |
| 4x2 AT | 2WD | Six-speed AT | Low | Rs. 43- 45 lakh |
| 4x4 AT | 4WD | Six-speed AT | High | Rs. 46.75 lakh |
| Neo Drive | 2WD Hybrid | Six-speed AT | Low | Rs. 46.75 lakh |
Our Recommendations
If you’re considering purchasing a Toyota Fortuner Legender, deciding on the right trim level depends largely on how and where you intend to drive.
For mainly urban and highway travel, the 4x2 automatic transmission (AT) is a great option, since you get all the same styling and passenger amenities as the Fortuner Legender 4x4 AT, but at a slightly lower price due to a less expensive 4WD system.
In contrast, if you commonly drive on hilly, mountainous, or rough terrain, or simply want to maximise your off-road capability, the 4X4 AT is the best option.

The Neo Drive delivers exceptional fuel efficiency with a newer hybrid design and retains the same premium feel as the older models.
In the competitive seven-seater SUV segment, let’s make a comparison to understand how to select the best one.
