It runs Volkswagen’s latest MIB4 (Modular Infotainment Matrix) system, which feels noticeably faster and smoother than the previous generation. The interface responds quickly and feels almost as fluid as a modern smartphone. Volkswagen has also improved usability by adding backlit touch sliders for volume and temperature, making them easier to operate during night drives.

The R-Line seats offer excellent lateral support and keep you firmly in place during spirited driving. Rear Seat Reality

The Tiguan R-Line remains a five-seater SUV, but it makes good use of its interior space. A six-foot passenger sitting behind a similarly tall driver still has generous knee room, while the long rear seat base provides proper under-thigh support for longer journeys.

In our testing, the Tiguan R-Line repeatedly achieved 0–100 kmph runs in under 7.1 seconds, which is impressive for a mid-size SUV in this category.

The system proved its worth during our 450 km-long test loop, primarily across the expansion joints and undulations of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. At highway speeds, the Tiguan R-Line feels stable and composed. Sharp bumps and sudden dips are absorbed with a controlled response rather than a harsh impact. The Vehicle Dynamics Manager continuously adjusts the suspension, keeping the SUV in balance and reducing the pitching motion often associated with taller SUVs.

Around the city, the SUV's big alloy wheels and low-profile tyres give it a slightly firmer ride over broken surfaces. Minor road imperfections can occasionally be felt inside the cabin. However, once you take the Tiguan R-Line onto winding roads, such as the hairpins around Pasarni Ghat, that firmness starts to make sense. The SUV stays on its line through turns, body roll is well controlled, and the steering feels precise. The Tiguan handles surprisingly well for a mid-size SUV, thanks to the 4Motion system's grip.

The Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line has a 2.0-liter TSI engine that works well, but the amount of petrol it uses changes depending on how you drive. The instrument cluster showed mileage close to 8.5 kmpl while we were stuck in Mumbai traffic, where speeds stayed under 15 kmph. The engine’s quick response and the permanent 4Motion all-wheel-drive system both contribute to slightly higher fuel consumption in dense traffic. In stop-and-go conditions, smooth throttle inputs help maintain better efficiency.

Several drivetrain technologies help the Tiguan improve efficiency once the road opens up:

• A coasting function that allows the DSG to disengage while cruising
• Cylinder deactivation technology to save fuel
• Eco and Normal drive modes for efficient driving
• DSG gearbox tuned for relaxed highway cruising

On the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, cruising steadily at around 100 kmph, we observed mileage climb to nearly 13.8 kmpl. With its 60-litre fuel tank, the Tiguan R-Line can realistically cover around 550 to 600 kilometres depending on driving style and traffic conditions.

Volkswagen’s MQB Evo platform is designed to meet stringent global safety standards and previous Tiguan generations have performed strongly in Euro NCAP testing.
