Pros

- The boxer engine not only offers a punchy midrange, but also an unmistakable exhaust note through its twin-pipe silencer.
- The classic roadster aesthetics stand out on our roads.
- A one-piece tubular bridge steel spaceframe makes the chassis look clean but importantly provides a modular setup for aftermarket customisation.
- Standard rider electronics bring three distinct riding modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic), traction control (DTC), and engine drag torque control (MSR).
Cons
- Since it is imported, the pricing is expensive especially for a retro purchase in India.
- The 16-litre fuel tank can restrict long distance range and require more fuel stops.
- Sporty roadster riding posture with rear-set footpegs can induce wrist and neck pain after a long ride.
- Desirable equipment like a bi-directional quickshifter, cruise control, and heated grips are part of optional accessory packs.
Verdict
The BMW R 12 nineT refines its classic roadster blueprint with a cleaner chassis, sharper ergonomics, and a punchier boxer engine. Its fully adjustable upside-down front forks, shaft drive and cornering electronics make it an engaging machine on twisting roads.
We admit that the import pricing almost keeps it in ‘collector’ territory, plus, the exposed stance gives you plenty of windblast on the highway. Having said that, if you wanted an authentic, highly customisable German roadster that’s packed with character and modern electronics, the R 12 nineT hits the sweet spot.
