2017 BMW S1000R Caught Testing With Subtle Upgrades

16 Sept 2016
  • What's New ?

BMW Motorrad India has launched the 2021 BMW S 1000 R in India. It will be available in three variants - Standard, Pro and Pro M Sport. The standard model is priced at Rs. 17.9 lakh, the Pro variant is priced at Rs. 19.75 lakh while the Pro M Sport is the most expensive and loaded variant, which is priced at Rs. 22.50 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom. BMW Motorrad has begun taking bookings for all variants of the 2021 S 1000 R across dealerships. The S 1000 R goes up against the Ducati Streetfighter V4 and the Triumph Speed Triple RS 1200 in India.

It is BMW’s flagship naked sport motorcycle and is based on the S 1000 RR. In fact, it uses the same engine, frame and swingarm as the RR.  The motorcycle gets a completely new design, the biggest change being the new headlight with a daytime running light placed right across, which is similar to what we seen on other BMW naked motorcycles, like the F 900 R and the G 310 R. The body panels are all new too, and now give a more generic look to the motorcycle as opposed to the more distinct design that the previous-generation model had, especially with the asymmetrical headlights.

The new S 1000 R gets a flex-frame chassis which is lighter than before and the engine is now a load-bearing element. The motorcycle has a kerb weight of 199 kg which is 6.5 kg less compared to the previous generation model. With the optional dynamics and comfort package, the new S 1000 R weighs 202 kg. Up front, the motorcycle gets 45 mm upside down forks and at the rear, there is a double-sided underslung Aluminium swingarm with a central monoshock. The bike gets twin 320 mm disc brakes up front with radial 4-piston fixed callipers and a single 220 mm disc at the rear with a single piston floating calliper.

In terms of electronics, the naked roadster gets a six-axis inertial measurement unit with dynamic traction control and ABS Pro as standard fitments. There are three riding modes as standard which are rain, road and dynamic. Additionally, one can also opt for the Riding modes 'Pro' package which has a configurable 'dynamic pro' mode along with 'engine drag torque control', 'power wheelie' and 'dynamic brake control' functions along with ABS Pro.

The new-gen BMW S 1000 R continues to get a 999 cc in-line 4-cylinder engine that now makes 162 bhp at 11,000 rpm along with peak torque of 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm. BMW says that at least 80 Nm of torque is available from 3,000 rpm. The engine speed is reduced by 8 per cent and the fuel efficiency goes up by 8 per cent too. The torque curve has been kept linear for better performance and ease of riding. The engine itself is now 5 kg lighter. The top speed of the motorcycle is over 250 kmph and the 0-100 kmph sprint takes a scant 3.2 seconds.

BMW Financial Services India will offer customised and flexible financial solutions as well. Customers can also get their loans pre-approved prior to delivery. The motorcycle gets a standard warranty for ‘three years, unlimited kilometres’, with an option to extend the warranty to fourth and fifth year. BMW also offers Road-Side Assistance which is a 24x7 365 days package as well.

Pros

  • Its inline-four engine has excellent midrange acceleration for that street riding punch.
  • It feels sharp, is effortless tip-in and offers rapid side-to-side transitions.
  • The M Quick-Action throttle reduces the twist rotation angle so riders can access immediate throttle response without repositioning their wrist grip.
  • Cast aluminium bridge-type "Flex Frame" uses the engine as a load-bearing element, paired with an underslung swingarm for pinpoint chassis feedback.
  • Electronics package features standard 6-axis IMU-governed aids including ABS Pro, traction control, Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR), and three riding modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic).
  • It has Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) electronic suspension which gives you real-time terrain and lean adaptation.

Cons

  • The engine radiates significant heat around the rider’s legs while riding in dense traffic.
  • Aggressive naked roadster styling leaves the rider fully exposed to heavy windblast at higher speeds.
  • The thin, sporty pillion seat offers minimal practical comfort, especially on longer rides.
  • High import pricing makes it an expensive buying proposition.
  • Some important features like a bi-directional quickshifter, cruise control, keyless ride, and ‘Riding Modes Pro’ are part of optional packages.

Verdict

The BMW S 1000 R offers some extreme bits of the S 1000 RR superbike into a sharper, street-usable naked roadster. With so much power, a sub-200 kg weight, the responsive M Quick-Action throttle, and an ultra-precise Flex Frame chassis, it gives you immediate thrills be it any riding situation.

Yes, the lack of wind protection limits high-speed touring endurance, and essential extras drive the final price higher. But even then, if you want superbike-grade German engineering with scintillating performance, without the committing ergos from clip-ons, the S 1000 R is one hell of a choice.
