The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR is an updated version of BMW Motorrad's flagship superbike, launched at the BMW JoyTown event in Delhi. With more tech, increased power, and significant styling updates, the 2023 S 1000 RR aims to stay at the forefront of the superbike market. Priced starting from ₹20.30 lakh (ex-showroom), this model is available in three variants and several color options, including Blackstorm Metallic, Racing Red Non-Metallic, and the iconic BMW Motorsport colors in Light White Non-Metallic

The design of the 2023 S 1000 RR has received substantial updates, giving it an even sportier appearance. The front-end now features winglets, similar to the M 1000 RR, which improve downforce and reduce the bike's tendency to wheelie during hard acceleration. The rear section has also been tweaked for a sharper, more aggressive look.

In addition to the aesthetic changes, the chassis has been optimized for better lateral flexibility. The main frame now has several openings, and the steering head angle has been flattened by 0.5 degrees, while the offset of the triple clamps has been reduced by 3 mm. These changes enhance precision and feedback from the front wheel, providing a more connected riding experience.

The 999 cc liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine has been further refined, now producing 206.5 bhp at 13,750 rpm, a 3 bhp increase over the previous model. The peak torque remains unchanged at 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm, but the engine's speed range has been broadened, allowing a maximum engine speed of 14,600 rpm. The result is a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.2 seconds, making the S 1000 RR one of the quickest superbikes on the market.

The six-speed gearbox with a bi-directional quickshifter ensures smooth and fast gear changes, while the bike’s power delivery is linear and manageable at lower RPMs, becoming more aggressive as you push the limits. The addition of winglets at the front helps keep the bike stable during rapid acceleration, ensuring the front wheel stays planted.

BMW has made significant improvements to the chassis geometry for 2023. The wheelbase has been increased from 1441 mm to 1457 mm, enhancing stability at high speeds. The rear swingarm now features an adjustable pivot, allowing riders to modify the geometry and ride height for a more personalized setup. The combination of these adjustments results in better cornering stability and precision, giving riders greater confidence during aggressive maneuvers.

One of the standout features is the addition of ‘slide control’ to the dynamic traction control system. This system uses a steering angle sensor to allow riders to pre-set drift angles when accelerating out of corners. The bike permits controlled slippage of the rear wheel until the set steering angle is reached, at which point traction control intervenes to stabilize the motorcycle. This feature is particularly useful for track riders looking to push the limits of rear-wheel drift

The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR may be a performance beast, but BMW has also ensured that rider comfort is not neglected. The riding position is sporty but not overly aggressive, making it manageable for both track days and longer road trips. The adjustable suspension offers flexibility, allowing riders to customize the ride according to their preferences and the conditions.

The new winglets not only aid performance but also reduce wind buffeting at higher speeds, contributing to a more comfortable and stable ride on highways.

Pros

  • Powerful 999 cc engine producing 206.5 bhp, with impressive acceleration (0-100 kmph in 3.2 seconds)
  • Advanced technology like slide control for dynamic traction, offering enhanced stability during high-speed cornering
  • Updated design with winglets for increased downforce and improved aerodynamics

Cons

  • Premium pricing starting at Rs 20.30 lakh, making it a significant investment
  • Can be overwhelming for novice riders due to the immense power and tech features
  • Slightly increased wheelbase may reduce agility in tight corners

Verdict

The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR stands out as a flagship superbike, offering blistering performance, cutting-edge technology, and aggressive styling. Its power-packed engine and refined handling make it a top choice for experienced riders seeking high-performance track and road experiences. However, its premium pricing and advanced features may be daunting for newcomers. For those looking for the ultimate in superbike technology and performance, the S 1000 RR is hard to beat.

Seriously BMW motorad has done commendable job as SS1000RR is great bike. I bought this machine in September 2019 M Pro variant and completed almost 15000 kms. I'm using it for mostly touring and daily commuting. I've done 3-4 tracks on BIC, believe me it feels like rocket while speeding. If you're planning to buy a superbike you should definitely consider it.

  • What's New?

BMW Motorrad has launched the updated model of its flagship superbike, the 2023 BMW S 1000 RR at the BMW JoyTown event in Delhi. The updated S 1000 RR gets more tech than before along with significant styling updates and even more power. The new S 1000 RR has been launched in 3 variants, with prices starting from Rs. 20.30 lakh (Ex-showroom), and is available in multiple colour options, Blackstorm Metallic, Style Passion in Racing Red Non-Metallic and the BMW Motorsport colours, in Light White Non-Metallic.

The 999 cc, liquid-cooled, four-cylinder engine now makes 206.5 bhp at 13,750 rpm, getting a bump of 3 bhp over the outgoing model. Peak torque remains the same at 113 Nm, coming in at 11,000 rpm. The engine speed range on the new S 1000 RR is now broader than before, with maximum engine speed being 14,600 rpm. All of this results in a 0-100 kmph time of just 3.2 seconds. The gearbox continues to be the six-speed unit with a bi-directional quickshifter.

In terms of design, the 2023 S 1000 RR now gets a new front-end, with winglets, similar to the M 1000 RR. The rear section gets a few tweaks too, making it look sportier than before. The winglets add more downforce on the front wheel, reducing the tendency of the motorcycle to wheelie upon hard acceleration. With the aim of optimising flexibility laterally, the main frame of the new RR was given several openings in the profile of the motorcycle.

The steering head angle has been flattened out by 0.5 degrees and the offset of the triple clamps has been reduced by 3 mm. The new chassis geometry offers even better precision, and feedback from the front wheel. The wheelbase of the motorcycle has been increased from 1,441 mm to 1,457 mm. The rear swingarm also gets an adjustable pivot, which could be used to change the geometry on the motorcycle along with the ride height.

The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR now also gets a ‘slide control’ function on the dynamic traction control, which uses a steering angle sensor. The slide control function allows the rider to select two pre-set drift angles for the traction control system when accelerating out of corners. Up to the respective leaning angle, the traction control system allows slippage at the rear wheel when accelerating out of a corner, thus enabling rear wheel drift. When the pre-set steering angle value is reached, traction control intervenes, reduces slip and stabilises the motorcycle.
