Expert Review on Maruti Suzuki Alto 800
Pros
- Small and budget friendly car for entry level buyers
- The gears slot in well and the clutch travel is less too
- It is very fuel efficient
Cons
- The safety features on the car are next to non-existent
- The Alto does not get much in terms of features
- seat cushioning could have been better
Alto 800 is worth its value if you are having a small family. It is a 4-seater car and therefore can support 4-5 members. The on-road price of the car is relatively cheaper in comparison to the facilities it offers and most importantly the fuel economy. The style elements with tech support and safety measures make the hatchback perfect for a city drive. Maruti has priced the top-end Alto 800 at ₹ 5.03 lakh and this is truly something significant.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800
The earlier Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 debuted in 2012 and was a reliable 800cc version offering good mileage and an affordable price point for buyers. The car has received minor upgrades over this period, although 2019 saw a major facelift, with it adhering to BS-VI regulations, while the body shell was also enhanced to adhere to new crash-testing guidelines. It continues to be one of India’s highest-selling cars to date.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 received a minor design tweak with the 2019 version being launched. The headlamps sport a petal-like design, while the rear bumper, boot lid and body panels are the same as the previous model. The new component here is the front bumper. This now has a big air dam, along with plastic mesh in the honeycomb layout. There are fog lamp slots, although you have to pay extra for adding them. There is a brand new front grille as well, while a black-colored surround is also available. The outside mirrors also look new on the 2019 version. The front fascia has thus received a minor tweak. The honeycomb grille covers the entire stretch between the headlamps. The car still does not have LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The side profile looks the same as the earlier model, with steel wheels in silver or black, based on the variant in question.
The rear design in the 2019 version also looks similar to its predecessor. The 800 moniker has been slashed off the rear, with the name only being Alto. This is the only change, with the rear bumper, tailgate, and fenders coming from the 2012 model itself. The tail lights, however, have been slightly revamped to exude a more premium feel, something that does well to attract buyers. Design-wise, while there are only a few minor bits that are new, the Alto 800 still looks cute enough on the roads.
The 2019 Alto has a similar dashboard and some other components as the more premium K10 version. The new Alto has a dual-tone dashboard in black and beige, which is aesthetically more pleasing than the earlier grey setup. The instrument console and steering wheel are similar to the earlier-2016 (pre-facelift) version of the Alto 800. However, there are dual-tone cream and black fabric for the door pads and seats this time.
The 2019 version has three variants in total. These are the base-level Std, which does not get any noteworthy features at all. The LXi variant and upwards come with power steering, power windows in front, and air conditioning. The top-end VXi variant comes with keyless entry and central locking, in addition to the SmartPlay Dock 2-DIN audio system for the higher trims, with support for AUX, USB, and Bluetooth. There is also an AM/FM radio option available, although the absence of a touch screen infotainment unit (present in a rival like the Renault Kwid for instance) is a big miss.
The cabin has already seen several updates over the last few years. The previous dashboard has made way for the new one as mentioned. There is a new paint scheme and the new audio system is a nice touch as well. The instrument console looks better in this version of the Alto as well.
The 2019 version of the Alto does not get a touch screen infotainment unit. However, the higher variants do get the SmartPlay Dock 2-DIN audio system. This is a nice touch, with its AUX, USB, and Bluetooth compatibility, along with its AM/FM radio. Music and connectivity-wise, it is an improvement over the previous versions of the Alto.
Engine Type | Displacement | Power | Torque |
Petrol | 796 cc | 48 hp | 69 Nm |
The Alto has the F8D petrol 796 cc engine that is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission system. There is no AMT option available for this model, and this is only available for the Alto K10 version. The gearbox and engine essentially remain unchanged, even after the shift to BS-VI. The exhaust does change for the car in order to adhere to the new regulations. The power and torque figures also remain exactly the same as the BS-IV version. Performance-wise, the Alto feels well-put together, being suitable for city rides and commutes. The engine is more refined at the moment, although it lacks the punch and power that an enthusiast may desire.
The Alto drives quite reliably on city roads, although you should not expect an ultra-luxurious experience. The car seems to be more refined when idling, without vibrations, even engine noise levels have come down significantly. However, there is still that sluggish pace and feel of the engine, while the throttle responses feel lethargic as well, particularly when the air conditioning unit is turned on. Power delivery feels jerky and choppy at times, with a spring-like clutch with short travel and adequate lightness. However, the five-speed manual transmission unit shifts smoothly, making the Alto a great option for city rides.
The ARAI-figures claim fuel economy of 22.05 kmpl which is lower than 24.7 kmpl earlier. This has resulted from emission-linked changes and the higher weight of the car.
The Alto has several additional safety features currently. Maruti Suzuki has already boosted the front fascia of the car to adhere to the new crash-testing regulations. The Alto is now 50mm longer than its previous version, which stood at 3,395 mm. This length increase has been necessitated by the new design for the bumper, which helps the car adhere to the regulations for pedestrian safety as well. The Alto offers driver’s airbags as standard features for all variants, in tandem with EBD, ABS, rear parking sensors, and front passenger and driver seat-belt reminders. There is also a speed alert system. These are now compulsory safety features in the country. The base and mid-range trims have optional passenger airbags, while the top-end trim (VXi) comes with dual airbags. These added safety features considerably enhance the appeal of the car to buyers at this price point.
The Alto has three variants available for buyers, namely the base model (Std), mid-range variant (LXi) and the top-end trim (VXi). The first two variants are also available with an optional package which integrates the passenger-side airbag in front, for an added cost. The base variant is truly affordable, getting ABS and EBD, reverse parking sensors, a driver’s side airbag, front seatbelt reminder, speed limit warning, and dual-tone interior theme as standard features. However, it does not have air conditioning and power steering. You can add a passenger airbag with the O variant. (optional)
The mid-range LXi trim is costlier and comes with the optional passenger airbag choice as well. This variant comes with power steering, powered windows in front, air conditioning, retractable seatbelts at the rear, silver interior accents, remote boot and fuel lid opener, rear child locks, and body-colored mirrors and handles. The top-end VXi trim is the priciest model in the line-up, although it is not priced a lot higher than the LXi variant. It gets all the features mentioned earlier, along with the factory-audio system with USB, Bluetooth, and other connectivity features. It also gets remote central locking, a rear parcel tray, 12V power socket, and two front speakers, along with internally adjustable mirrors.
If you do not mind paying slightly more for all the features and comforts, then you should go for the VXi variant of the Alto. However, if you are looking for something that saves you money, while being decently equipped, then the LXi variant is also a good option. This comes with all the basic features that you require. You only miss out on the audio system and power socket essentially, along with a few other extras. If you are comfortable skipping the same, then you can choose the LXi variant of the Alto.
The entry-level hatchback segment has been ruled by the Alto 800 for several years now. The revamped 2019 version of the Alto has been competing with the Renault Kwid and Datsun Redi-Go in its segment. All three hatchbacks have compact designs, although the Renault Kwid is still the biggest, by way of its length, wheelbase, and width. The Kwid also has the biggest boot, while the Datsun Redi-Go is the lightest and tallest car in this category. The Alto is the heaviest entry-level hatchback car, while also offering the smallest boot.
The Alto engine makes the same power and torque, while fuel economy has come down slightly. The Renault Kwid and Datsun Redi-Go both promise better fuel efficiency than the Alto, while the Kwid has a more powerful engine. All hatchbacks in the category have standard five-speed manual transmission systems. The top-end variants of all these cars have standard ABS, EBD and driver’s side airbags. The Alto takes it up a notch with its passenger airbag for the top-end trim (standard). The top-end variant of the car also has a 2-DIN audio unit with Bluetooth, while it is the only car with rear parking sensors. The Redi-Go only gets a 1-DIN audio unit, although it has LED DRLs for the top-end trim. The Renault Kwid has the highest number of features, offering a touch screen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with on-board navigation, a digital speedometer, and a reverse parking camera.
Putting these factors into consideration, that the Alto measures up favorably to its rivals, considering overall performance, reliability, and features. However, the Renault Kwid is still more feature-rich and may attract tech-savvy buyers who are looking for more connectivity options and navigation support.
The Maruti Alto comes with more safety features than before, along with some added extras for the top-end trim. It also gets optional passenger-side airbags for the entry-level and mid-range variants. It still drives and performs reasonably well, although fuel economy figures have come down slightly. The best part is that the Alto is now compliant with new-age emission, safety, and crash-testing regulations. It looks stylish enough, offering better interiors and performance. Yes, the cabin could have been more spacious and many other comfort and convenience features are missing.
However, first-time buyers or those buying small second cars will still view the Alto as the best possible option, for its overall efficiency, affordable running costs, reliability, and Maruti Suzuki’s vast servicing and repair network. Add a competitive price point to the mix, and the Alto seems like a value proposition from all angles. Its dominance in the entry-level segment should continue, in spite of the presence of well-packaged rivals like the Renault Kwid.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, a prominent figure in the small car segment in India, is equipped with a three-cylinder engine. This compact yet efficient engine has a displacement of 796 cubic centimeters. Despite its small size, the engine is capable of generating a power output of 48 PS (Pferdestärke, a unit for measuring engine power), which is quite respectable for a car in its class. In addition to power, the engine produces a maximum torque of 69 Newton-meters. This torque plays a crucial role in determining the car's acceleration and overall driving dynamics.
The top speed of the Maruti Suzuki Alto800 is another notable aspect, clocking in at an impressive 140 kilometers per hour. This speed is more than sufficient for city driving conditions and adequate for occasional highway trips. One of the most appealing aspects of the Alto 800 is its fuel efficiency . The car offers a remarkable mileage of 22.05 kilometers per liter when running on regular petrol. For those looking for even more economy, the Alto 800 also comes in a CNG version, which boasts an even higher mileage of 31.59 kilometers per kilogram of CNG. This dual-fuel option makes the Alto 800 a versatile choice for a wide range of consumers, from daily commuters to cost-conscious buyers.
The choice between petrol and CNG versions allow consumers to select a model that best suits their driving needs and budget considerations. The petrol variant is ideal for those who prefer a conventional fuel type and value the simplicity and widespread availability of petrol. On the other hand, the CNG version is an excellent choice for users looking to reduce fuel costs and minimize their environmental footprint, as CNG is often cheaper than petrol and produces fewer emissions.
The Alto 800, one of the most popular models from Maruti Suzuki , is often considered for various driving conditions, including hilly terrain. While it may not be the first choice for such environments due to certain technical specifications, it surprisingly holds its ground quite well. The primary considerations for a vehicle to be suitable for hilly areas include a robust engine, sufficient ground clearance, and overall build quality that can withstand the rigors of steep and uneven roads.
Technically, the Maruti Suzuki Alto800 is equipped with a relatively modest engine, specifically a 796 cc unit. This engine generates a power output of 48 PS and a torque of 69 Nm. While these figures may not seem particularly high, especially when compared to larger, more powerful vehicles designed for challenging terrains, they are adequate for basic hill driving conditions. The engine's performance is a crucial factor in navigating uphill stretches, where power and torque play significant roles in maintaining steady and reliable ascents.
Another important factor is the ground clearance of the vehicle. The Alto 800 has a ground clearance of 160 mm. Ground clearance is the height of a vehicle's lowest point from the ground and is a critical element in preventing the undercarriage of the car from scraping against uneven road surfaces, rocks, and other obstacles commonly found in hilly areas. The 160 mm ground clearance of the Alto 800, while not exceptionally high, is generally considered sufficient for smaller hills and less rugged terrains.
Despite these limitations, the Alto 800's performance in hilly regions is bolstered by Maruti Suzuki's legendary build quality. Maruti vehicles are known for their reliability, durability, and efficient performance, factors that play a significant role in ensuring that the Alto 800 can handle the challenges of hill driving to a reasonable extent. This build quality includes well-engineered components, a sturdy chassis, and a design that emphasizes functional reliability.
- The Maruti Suzuki Alto800 has a ground clearance of 160 mm.
The heart of the Alto is its 800 cc engine, specifically a 796 cc unit. This engine is known for its efficiency and reliability, producing a power output of 48 PS and a maximum torque of 69 Nm. While these figures are adequate for city driving and short commutes, they might not be as favorable for extended highway journeys. On longer drives, a more powerful engine can provide better overtaking capabilities and a more relaxed cruising experience. The Alto's top speed of around 140 kmph is indicative of its performance capabilities, which are more suited to moderate speeds.
In terms of fuel efficiency , the Alto shines. The smaller engine size contributes to good mileage, which is a significant advantage, especially considering the rising fuel costs. For those prioritizing fuel economy over speed and power, the Alto could be a reasonable choice for longer trips.
The seating in the Alto is decently comfortable, and designed for short to medium-duration travel. However, on longer journeys, the comfort level might not match that of larger, more premium vehicles. Over extended periods, the lack of advanced ergonomic features and space can become noticeable, potentially leading to discomfort.
Another consideration for long drives is storage space. The Alto offers a boot space of 177 liters, which is on the smaller side. For longer trips, especially those involving multiple passengers with luggage, this limited storage capacity might prove inadequate. This necessitates careful packing and potentially limits the amount of luggage that can be carried.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 provides essential comfort features aimed at making daily commutes convenient:
Manual air conditioning for cabin temperature control.
Front power windows for added convenience.
Smart storage spaces including door pockets and a glove box for storing small items.
SmartPlay dock with Bluetooth connectivity (in higher variants) to enable hands-free calling and music streaming.
Well-cushioned seats with decent legroom and headroom for front passengers, making it comfortable for short drives and city commuting.
The safety features of the Maruti Suzuki Alto800 , particularly its top-end variant, we can delve deeper into the specifics and the importance of each feature. The driver's side Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag is a pivotal safety component in modern vehicles. In the event of a collision, particularly a frontal impact, the airbag deploys rapidly to cushion the driver, significantly reducing the risk of severe injuries to the head and upper body. This feature is especially crucial in a compact car like the Alto 800, where space constraints can potentially increase injury risks during accidents.
The over-speed warning system in the Alto 800 is another vital safety feature. It alerts the driver when the vehicle exceeds a predetermined speed limit. This not only promotes safer driving practices but also helps in adhering to traffic regulations, thereby contributing to overall road safety. The inclusion of child safety locks is a testament to Maruti's attention to the safety of all passengers, especially young children. These locks prevent the doors from being opened from the inside, a necessary precaution for avoiding accidents involving children.
In addition to these features, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a standout inclusion. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during emergency braking, which is crucial for maintaining control of the vehicle and avoiding skids, particularly on slippery roads or during sudden stops. This feature is critical for enhancing the vehicle's safety in challenging driving conditions.
The reverse parking sensors in the Alto 800 address the common challenges of urban parking. These sensors help the driver detect obstacles while reversing, reducing the likelihood of collisions, and making parking in tight spaces easier and safer. The front seat belt reminders are a simple yet effective safety measure. They encourage all occupants to wear seat belts, a proven method to reduce injuries and fatalities in accidents.
Lastly, the inclusion of disc brakes for the front wheels is a significant upgrade for the Alto 800. Disc brakes offer superior braking performance compared to drum brakes, especially under high stress or at higher speeds. This feature provides an added layer of safety, ensuring effective stopping power when it's needed the most.
Overall, the safety features of the Maruti Alto 800, especially in its top-end variant, showcase a comprehensive approach to passenger safety. These features, from the SRS airbag to ABS and reverse parking sensors, highlight Maruti's commitment to integrating advanced safety technologies into their vehicles, making the Alto 800 a notable option for buyers who prioritize safety alongside value and affordability.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto800, a widely recognized vehicle in the small car segment, is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), a feature that significantly enhances its safety profile. ABS is particularly vital in compact cars like the Alto800, where advanced safety features can play a critical role due to the vehicle's smaller size and structure. The primary function of ABS is to prevent the wheels from locking during intense braking situations, which is crucial for maintaining control of the vehicle during emergency stops or on slick surfaces, where locked wheels can lead to a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of accidents.
The ABS in the Alto800 is composed of advanced sensors and microprocessors. These components continuously monitor the rotational speed of each wheel. When the system identifies that one or more wheels are on the verge of locking, it automatically adjusts the brake pressure to those wheels. This adjustment is rapid and can occur multiple times within a second, much quicker than any manual intervention by the driver. This capability of ABS enables the driver to retain steering control during heavy braking, allowing them to swerve around obstacles while slowing down the car effectively.
Moreover, ABS plays a critical role in improving the overall safety of the Alto800. It reduces the stopping distance on various surfaces, including both dry and wet roads, when compared to traditional braking systems. This reduction in stopping distance is particularly beneficial in avoiding rear-end collisions and other accidents that can occur due to sudden braking. Furthermore, ABS in the Alto800 is designed to work in conjunction with other safety features of the vehicle, such as electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and brake assist, creating a comprehensive safety system.
The incorporation of ABS in the Maruti Suzuki Alto800 demonstrates the company's dedication to integrating advanced safety features into its more affordable models. This reflects the evolving safety standards in the automotive industry, especially relevant in the Indian market where driving conditions can be challenging. By including ABS, the Alto800 is not only an economical and practical choice for consumers but also a safer option, meeting the increasing consumer demand for vehicles with enhanced safety features.
The availability of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) in the Maruti Suzuki Alto800 highlights an important aspect of modern vehicle safety. In response, it's noted that ESC is not a standard feature in all variants of the Alto800. However, it may be available as an optional feature in certain higher-end trim levels.
Electronic Stability Control is a vital safety technology in contemporary automobiles. It significantly contributes to a vehicle's safety by enhancing its stability, especially under challenging driving conditions. ESC functions by detecting and reducing the loss of traction, which can lead to skidding, particularly during abrupt maneuvers or on slippery surfaces. When the system perceives a difference between the driver’s intended path and the car’s actual direction, it selectively applies brakes to specific wheels and, if necessary, adjusts the engine power. This intervention aids in aligning the vehicle back to the driver's intended course, thereby mitigating risks of oversteering or understeering.
The presence of ESC in certain trims of the Alto800 signifies Maruti Suzuki 's understanding of the importance of such advanced safety features, even in budget-friendly car segments. This approach mirrors a broader trend in the automotive industry, where high-end safety features are becoming increasingly accessible in various vehicle categories.
Incorporating ESC into select models of the Alto800 represents a significant step towards improving safety. The system's ability to maintain vehicle control during unexpected situations and adverse driving conditions is invaluable. It helps in preventing accidents that could occur due to loss of traction, a common issue during sudden turns or when driving on wet and slippery roads. The benefit of having ESC in a vehicle is further underlined by various studies and real-world data, showing a decrease in accidents involving loss of control in vehicles equipped with this system.
