What's New on Maruti Suzuki Eeco?
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco has received another update bringing with it some notable changes under the skin. Priced from Rs 5.21 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Eeco is now powered by Maruti’s 1.2-litre K-Series Dual Jet petrol engine and receives some cosmetic and feature updates. As before the Eeco is available in a wide range of variants with both private and commercial applications ranging from ferrying passengers to ambulances and load carriers.
Maruti has launched the updated Eeco with standard petrol and CNG variants from the start. The 1.2-litre Dual Jet engine has been detuned for use in the van with the unit developing 80 bhp and 104.4 Nm in petrol and 71 bhp and 95 Nm in CNG spec. In comparison the same unit in models such as the Wagon R and Dzire develops a meatier 89 bhp and 113 Nm in petrol and 76 bhp and 98.5 Nm in CNG spec.
A five-speed manual gearbox is standard with Maruti claiming that the van can now return up to 20.20 kmpl in petrol and 27.05 km/kg in CNG spec depending on the variant.
On the cosmetic front, Maruti has not made any changes to the Eeco’s utilitarian design with the updated van only seeing the addition of a new Brisk Blue paint shade. Inside, the dashboard gets some tweaks such as a high set hazard light switch atop the centre console, a new steering wheel, and revised rotary-style air-con controls. The instrument cluster too has been updated with a new digital unit similar to the one in the new Alto K10.

Maruti Suzuki Eeco
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco has been a replacement for the rapidly aging Maruti Suzuki Omni and has done well in its targeted segments, i.e. business owners, fleet owners, and even large families.
How is the design?
The tallboy design template is a signature for the Maruti Suzuki Eeco. It is derived from the earlier Versa model. The car has neat tail lamps and headlamps along with rear and front bumpers. The design feels dated and out of vogue, although in a way it is not meant to impress. It is targeted for those not interested as much in the design as much as they desire space, utility, and people-moving attributes. In that sense, it has replaced the Omni with aplomb, and has been going strong ever since.
How does it perform?
| CNG | 1196 cc | 61.68 BHP | 85 Nm |
| Petrol | 1196 cc | 72.41 BHP | 98 Nm |
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco has a fairly decent petrol engine, with a CNG option as well. The petrol engine works pretty well with the car’s rear-wheel drive configuration. There is good performance for tackling city traffic while the engine does not come with unnecessary vibrations at lower rpms as well. Changing the gears is a smooth and precise affair as well. In spite of what you would otherwise expect, the engine has extremely low vibration and noise levels. While it is not the car you would buy for sporty driving or performance, it does manage to function decently.
How is the mileage?
• Petrol- 16.11 kmpl
• CNG- 20.88 kg/km
How is the driving experience?
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco does not impress with its driving manners though. There is a bouncy and unsettled ride although the car can take most potholes and bumps quite easily. The suspension setup is durable enough to bear heavy loads. The Eeco functions much better when there are more people packed into the car. There is a lot of pitching and body roll at times. The ride quality may also get better with bigger wheels. The car can however be maneuvered smoothly and responds well to quick shifts.
What’s the interior like?
The interiors are also not the strong suit of the Maruti Suzuki Eeco. They feel bare and sparse without any contemporary feature that you would otherwise expect. The dashboard has a simple and decent design and the road view is also pretty good. There are several storage points along with power windows and roof-mounted air conditioning vents. The fit and finish leave much to be desired. The HVAC system’s knobs may be taken from the earlier-generation Maruti Suzuki line-up as well. There are 5 and 7 seater options for the Maruti Suzuki Eeco. There are no other features available.
Tech and infotainment
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco does not get as many tech features. They are limited to the instrument console, multi-function display, boot-lid opener, fuel-lid opener, air conditioning, and so on. There is a fuel gauge, trip meter, and odometer.
Safety equipment
The Eeco gets the driver frontal airbag with rear sensors, child safety locks, ABS, EBD, high-speed alerts, seat-belt reminders, and other basic safety features.
Which variant to buy?
Those looking for more space and storage abilities should choose the 5-seater version. The 7-seater version works if you have a large family or need to carry a lot of people together. If you want even lower running and maintenance costs, then you can opt for the CNG version as well. The cheapest version is the 5-seater STD which is as bare as it gets. You are better off choosing the 5 seater AC version in this regard.
Which cars compete in this segment?
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco has barely any rival, apart from the Tata Venture. The Venture is however more tilted towards the commercial end of the spectrum, rather than being a passenger car. Both models measure up equally and they are suitable for a niche customer base that purchases them.
Verdict (Value for money)
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco offers good luggage space and lower maintenance costs while being a utility vehicle for several purposes. However, the design, interiors, and everything else is outdated and basic. It is also synonymous with a taxi in several areas, something which could be a deterrent for passenger car buyers. However, it is a good people-carrier without any modern day features at a reasonable price point. This is a cost-effective option for transportation although more comfortable seats, some basic features, and more safety features would have been nice. The ride quality is also nothing to write home about. Yet, the Maruti Suzuki Eeco caters to those looking for a cheap yet spacious utility vehicle for meeting diverse needs.
Pros
- Spacious
- Good Mileage Figures
- Low On Maintenance
Cons
- Rear Seats Have No Head Rests
- Interior Has Poor Cushioning
- No Rear Ac Vents
Verdict
The Eeco has been a workhorse for the Maruti Suzuki brand in the country for many years be it for ferrying passengers or loading a lot of cargo. It is really practical owing to features like less price, superior interior space and high fuel efficiency. Where it falters is lack of good ride quality and not having enough safety features. A missing strong rival means the field is pretty much clear for the Eeco.
Maruti Suzuki Eeco Mileage
Maruti Suzuki Eeco mileage is 19 to 26 KM/L as per ARAI The Manual Petrol engine has a mileage of 26.8 KM/L.
| Fuel Type | Transmission | Mileage | City Mileage | Highway Mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Manual | 26.8 KM/L | 24 KM/L | 28 KM/L |

- Truly a value for money car - An SUV for a middle-class Indian5.0EecoPerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportI was driving a non-AC Maruti 800 since year 2002 which was purchased by my father at that time. That Maruti 800 is still in a good condition but everybody knows that it?s not spacious and also as it was a non-AC, so it was horrible to drive it in summers. Since Feb 2016, I was thinking of purchasing a new hatchback car (with AC). I belong to a middle class Indian family and my budget was not that high. I could do without many features (which are available in expensive cars) like power steering, power windows, rear defogger, rear wiper, ABS, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), speed sensing door lock, parking sensors, vanity mirrors on sun visors and various other luxury features as these were also not available in Maruti 800. After all I had to shift from a 14 year old non-AC Maruti 800 to a better car. I studied about various hatchback cars on internet and then I observed that majority of popular hatchback cars of different brands like Maruti Swift, Maruti Ritz, Ford Figo, Toyota Etios Liva, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai Grand i10, Hyundai Elite i20, were having a 1200cc engine with 4-cylinders and 16-valves, after knowing that I had determined that I was going to purchase a car which was going to have a 1200 cc engine with 4-cylinders and 16-valves. On road price of above mentioned cars was around 6 lakhs or more. I could spend only 4 lakh rupees as down payment. Now if I had to purchase a car out of the one mentioned above then I had to take a loan of 2 lakh rupees from some bank. Other problem was: - I don?t like dwarf cars and I was interested in a very tall + spacious car and out of the one mentioned above only Maruti Ritz has got a tall boy design but I wanted an even taller car. Now Maruti Wagon R has also got a tall boy design it is taller than Maruti Ritz but it has got only 1000 cc engine with 3 cylinders whereas my aim was to get 1200 cc engine. Tata Nano has also got a tall boy design but again it?s got 624cc engine with only 2-cylinders. After a lot of research, I could found only one car (Eeco) which suited me in every manner and that too from the brand of Maruti Suzuki (which is having largest support network in India). On 23rd May 2016, I have finally purchased Maruti Eeco 5 seater with AC/heater at an on road price of only rupees four lakhs and am really proud of my decision. Exterior - Tall boy design (height is 6 feet which is slightly more than that of Toyota Innova). Eeco can be considered as a small SUV or an SUV for middle class Indians. It has got very good ground clearance. Interior (Features, Space and Comfort) - Very spacious with nearly 540 litres of boot space, very comfortable high seating with very good leg space and very good head space, good under thigh support, good for long journeys. Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox - Very smooth and responsive engine, good fuel econom and very smooth gearbox with diagonal shift assist. Ride Quality and Handling - Excellent ride quality which is comparable to that of an SUV due to its tall and spacious design and high seating and noiseless engine and good suspension. Easy handling though it takes effort in using sliding doors. Final words: - Middle class Indians who are planning to purchase an Alto 800 or Alto K10 or Wagon R or Tata Nano should consider buying Eeco. Cost of Eeco is only nearly one lakh more than that of Tata Nano. Cost of Eeco is about 50 thousand more than that of Alto 800 and somewhat less than that of Alto K10. Cost of Eeco is one lakh rupees less than that of a Wagon R. Eeco is the only car on Indian roads which is offering a 1200cc engine with 4-cylinders + 16-valves at the most economical on road price of only 4 lakh rupees. A 6 feet tall, very spacious, very large boot space of 540 litres, heightened seating with good under thigh support (as that available in an SUV), 1200cc engine with 4-cylinders 16-valves, very good ground clearance.By Ajit Singh KalraPosted on: Dec 16, 2019 03:52 PM17835
- A car which needs second thought before buying5.0EecoPerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportTo say a vintage car in the recent technologically developed car industry, you can think of a car without AC and a car without power steering when even heavy vehicles are fitted with such facilities. I want to speak to the designer and ask them on what basis he has designed this car in such a foolish manner. I also don't understand why Maruti Suzuki is manufacturing such a low profile car, when they can have a car fitted with AC and power steering for all the options it would be much better.By R.NadanasabaiPosted on: Nov 18, 2019 10:40 PM92
