  • What's New on Mercedes-Benz GLC?

Mercedes-Benz India has introduced the 2021 GLC SUV with Mercedes Me Connect and a host of new features. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC is priced from Rs. 57.40 lakh, going up to Rs. 63.15 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom India). The SUV is the latest from the German automaker to get its connected car technology that has become a staple feature in all new launches from the brand. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class was also updated with the tech earlier this month. Do note that the updated model is independent of the 15 product launches that Mercedes-Benz India has announced for 2021.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC now gets Mercedes Me Connect (MMC) technology with voice recognition and integrates Alexa Home, Google Home along with Parking location on the navigation system and the app. The car also features front massage seats that have been introduced for the first time on the Mercedes-Benz India product line-up with the GLC.

The digital instrument cluster is all-new and brings a more customisable experience for users, while the new remote engine start feature allows you to pre-cool the cabin remotely. The SUV also gets Parking Package with 360-degree camera for enhanced visibility. The 2021 GLC is offered in two new colours - Brilliant Blue and High Tech Silver.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is currently the smallest SUV from the automaker on sale in India and has turned out to be a well-received product with over 8,400 units sold since it was first launched in 2016. Apart from the new features, the SUV remains identical to the 2020 model and continues to draw power from the 2.0-litre turbo petrol on the GLC 200 that develops 194 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. The GLC 220d gets a 2.0-litre diesel motor with 192 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque. Both engines are paired with a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, while the diesel also gets 4MATIC AWD.

car&bike Expert Take

“Mercedes-Benz’s GLC appeals to families who want comfort and modern technology. The interior borrows heavily from the S-Class, featuring a large touchscreen that removes most physical buttons. It also focuses on a soft ride rather than aggressive handling.”

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of the highest-selling SUVs for the brand in India. It competes directly against the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Volvo XC60. Mercedes-Benz builds the car locally at the Chakan plant in Maharashtra, which helps keep its price fairly competitive against imported CBU rivals.

Buyers looking for an everyday commuter with a strong brand image will find this car a very practical option. It packs both petrol and diesel engines in its lineup and is widely considered a very comfortable daily driver from India’s mid-size luxury SUV market.

Jaiveer Mehra did a comparison review of the GLC with the BMW X3 some time back. He says this about the Mercedes-Benz,

“The GLC, despite being on sale since 2023, still looks like a well-proportioned and good-looking compact luxury SUV.”

The GLC’s two engines are refined and offer fairly robust performance.

Engine Specifications

Buyers can choose the GLC 300 4MATIC petrol or the GLC 220d 4MATIC diesel.

EnginePowerTorqueTransmissionDrivetrain
2.0-Litre Turbo-Petrol (GLC 300)258 bhp400 NmNine-speed Automatic4x4 (All-Wheel Drive)
2.0-Litre Turbo-Diesel (GLC 220d)197 bhp440 NmNine-speed Automatic4x4 (All-Wheel Drive)

Key Takeaways

  • An integrated starter generator provides an extra 23 bhp for short bursts.
  • Both versions use the same nine-speed torque converter automatic gearbox and the AWD.
  • The petrol engine pushes the SUV from zero to 100 kmph in 6.2 seconds.
  • In contrast, the diesel takes eight seconds to reach 100 kmph.

City Driving Experience

Driving the GLC in heavy traffic is simple and relaxing.

  • The mild-hybrid electric motor adds power at low engine speeds.
  • The nine-speed automatic transmission changes gears quietly at low speeds.
  • The automatic start-stop system turns the engine off when you stop at a red light.
  • The electric motor starts it again quickly when you press the accelerator.

Highway Driving Experience

The GLC performs very well on open highways, too.

  • The strong mid-range torque on the diesel model makes overtaking slower vehicles easy.
  • The nine-speed gearbox seamlessly finds the right gear to find power constantly.
  • It offers low RPM cruising so that you can save some fuel.
  • The cabin blocks out a lot of outside noise.

Mercedes-Benz gave the new GLC smoother body lines and a wider front end compared to the older model.

Ground Clearance201 mm216 mm200 mm

Key Takeaways

  • At 4,716 mm long, the GLC has a very strong road presence.
  • The interior feels spacious, especially for passengers sitting in the back.

Build Quality & Materials

Mercedes-Benz uses high-quality materials inside the cabin, including premium leather upholstery and soft-touch plastics. Also, the car feels very solid from the outside; its doors are quite heavy, and they close with a thick sound.

The exterior uses smooth curves and bright LED lighting to look premium.

Front Profile

  • The front grille features a large Mercedes-Benz star in the centre.
  • The LED high-performance headlamps connect directly to the front grille.
  • The front bumper includes chrome-plated faux skid plates to give it a tough SUV look.

Side Profile

  • The side profile features aluminium-look running boards with rubber studs.
  • They make getting in and out easier for passengers.
  • The SUV rides on 19-inch light-alloy wheels.
  • The 201 mm ground clearance for clearing large speed bumps is quite visible from this angle.

Rear Profile

  • The rear features two-piece LED tail lamps.
  • A curved chrome accent bar connects the two.
  • The bumper sits low with dual chrome exhausts.
  • The power tailgate opens automatically when you kick your foot under the rear bumper.

Pros

  • The highly futuristic portrait touchscreen
  • 620 litres of usable boot space
  • Effortless suspension for broken Indian roads
  • Identical pricing for both petrol and diesel engines
  • The transparent bonnet feature

Cons

  • No physical climate control buttons
  • Body roll during fast cornering
  • More expensive than rivals

Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz GLC does not try to be a sharp sports car. Instead, it focuses entirely on keeping its passengers comfortable and isolated from outside noise. The heavy updates to the cabin technology keep it ahead of older rivals, and the 15-speaker Burmester audio system is a major highlight for daily commuters. While you have to accept the learning curve of a buttonless dashboard, the exceptional ride comfort and refined engine options from this vehicle make it a very practical option in the luxury SUV space.

Jaiveer summarises,

“The GLC is no slouch off the line, though its comfort-oriented nature will make it the vehicle of choice for the chauffeur-driven.”

Mercedes-Benz GLC Mileage

Glc 220d is good for daily driving... It returns 12kmpl in city easily and 20+ on highways on sedated driving. Good on power and reliability. Service cost is 80-90k per year on average.

I, Nilmoney Roy would first like to establish that I am the proud owner of 3 Mercedes Benz’s; a 1962 model, a 1965 model and a GLC 220 D. On my 82nd Birthday last August 2017 my son gifted me a GLC 220 D from your Kolkata branch. It is with deep regret that I have drafted this letter. My GLC has not been equipped with a standard GPS navigation system. It is appalling that such a premium car does not have a basic feature, a feature found in almost any car in this day and age of technology of much lower valuation. To further establish my concern and in hopes of correcting the situation, I contacted the Kolkata establishment of Mercedes Benz. I spoke to Mr. Sourav Rahan (Sales Manager), where I raised my concerns and was swiftly told that the GPS Navigation System would come at an additional cost. To my utter surprise, a car worth Rs. 50 Lakh requires additional payments for a proper and a normal experience. A system worth Rs. 40,000 is a small fraction of what the car costs and is not the problem for a consumer like me. The problem is that a car worth this amount must be equipped with the basic requirements and the fee for such requirements must be included in the initial total fee. An additional fee, for a navigation system, for a car worth this immense amount is most certainly not necessary The principle of selling a car, without a navigation system, and then including it as an additional payment is what is wrong with the company’s policy, something I would like to shed some light upon. I would like a prompt and satisfactory response along with a solution to my aforementioned concerns and I hope this letter is read with the seriousness with which it has been written with.
