Skoda Slavia: car&bike Expert Take
“The Skoda Slavia 1.5 TSI is clearly a machine for people who actually love to drive. It’s got that punchy mid-range pull, precise steering, and a level of highway stability that makes it feel incredibly secure and alive on the tarmac. It doesn't get distracted by empty gadgets; instead, it doubles down on mechanical depth, refined turbo power, and a connected feel that proves Skoda still knows exactly how to build a proper driver’s car.”- Shams Raza Naqvi
Expert Review Context
Shams Raza Naqvi, Senior Editor at car&bike, and Ameya Naik, Senior Auto Journalist, bring over 35 years of combined hands-on experience reviewing cars and two-wheelers across India.
For this review, they spent a long time driving the Skoda Slavia on different road conditions. This helped them understand its real-world performance, behavior, and daily usability.
Skoda Slavia Overview
Launched in India in 2022, the Skoda Slavia marked a significant turning point for the brand under the 'India 2.0' project. While the rest of the market shifted aggressively towards SUVs, Skoda decided to double down on the mid-size sedan segment, replacing the ageing Rapid with a vehicle that is significantly larger, wider, and more technologically advanced. Over the past few years, it has become a popular choice for driving purists upgrading from compact hatchbacks and for those who find the current crop of high-riding vehicles lacking in high-speed poise.
This Skoda Slavia expert review is based on detailed road tests carried out by the car&bike team on different terrains across India. The high-performance 1.5 TSI variants were evaluated for their mechanical precision, while the 1.0 TSI manual and automatic versions were tested for their daily usability.

By 2025, the brand continued to improve the range, one of the ways being the launch of special editions and the Skoda Slavia top model, Monte Carlo. This context is important because Slavia today is a statement that the premium sedan is here to stay. If you are looking at the entry-level Skoda Slavia base model or the flagship versions, the focus remains on European build quality and driving dynamics. The Skoda Slavia has never been positioned as a mere commuter; during our testing, it became clear that the brand has tuned the powertrains for those who truly enjoy the act of driving. We found that the 1.5-litre turbo makes highway overtakes feel effortless, even with a full house, providing a surge of torque that most naturally aspirated engines simply cannot match.
Engine Options Tested
1.0-litre TSI Petrol | 114 bhp | 178 Nm | Six-speed MT / Six-speed Torque Converter |
1.5-litre TSI Petrol | 148 bhp | 250 Nm | Six-speed MT / Seven-speed DSG |
Driving Experience: Real World
On our city and highway test drives, the 1.5-litre TSI variant emerged as the performance benchmark. During our highway runs, it managed to complete the 0-100 kmph sprint in just over 8.8 seconds. This makes it one of the quickest sedans in its class. The seven-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) is lightning-fast, swapping ratios with a telepathic precision that keeps the engine in the meat of its power band.
Ameya Naik, with over 15 years of experience, notes:
“The 1.5 TSI gives the Slavia the urgency that enthusiasts crave. One enjoys the mid-range punch and the way it masks speed on open expressways. It is a driver’s car first, family car second.”
The 1.0-litre TSI, however, is tuned for a balance between efficiency and city drivability. In urban conditions, the throttle response is predictable and relaxed, making it easy to manage in heavy traffic. However, the six-speed manual features a long clutch travel that might take a toll on your left leg over time. Additionally, once the engine revs over 2,300rpm, significant noise creeps into the cabin. While it lacks the sheer "shove" of the larger engine, Shams Raza Naqvi observed that it never feels underpowered for routine duties.
According to Shams Raza Naqvi:
"The strength of the 1.0 TSI is its versatility. It handles the city commute with grace and doesn't feel strained when you need to cruise at triple-digit speeds on the highway."
An important technical highlight we observed is the Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) in the 1.5-litre engine. Under low load conditions, the system shuts down two cylinders to save fuel. We found this transition to be completely seamless; you wouldn't know it’s happening unless you’re staring at the notification on the digital instrument cluster.
Pros
- Genuinely engaging 1.5-litre TSI engine.
- Excellent five-star Global NCAP safety.
- Large 521-litre boot space.
- High ground clearance for Indian speed breakers.
Cons
- Interior plastics could be plusher in some areas.
- Long clutch travel on the manual transmission.
- Significant engine noise above 2,300rpm in the 1.0-litre variant.
Verdict
The Skoda Slavia is a focused premium sedan and it succeeds because it doesn't try to be an SUV. Based on road tests by the car&bike team, including Ameya Naik and Shams Raza Naqvi, the Slavia proves its strength in terms of safety, performance, and long-distance usability.
