car&bike Expert Take
“Off-road ability and premium cabin features; put them together, and you get the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Although this luxury SUV faces some strong German competition, its diesel engine is a very solid choice to settle for.”

Ever since launching in India around a decade ago, the Land Rover Discovery Sport has always been the entry point into the British brand's fleet. While it initially touched showroom floors in 2015 to replace the Freelander, over time, the premium SUV built something of its own by offering a three-row seating option in a segment often contested by five-seaters.
Over the years, Land Rover has also continuously tweaked the formula to keep this SUV fresh. The last major update saw the cabin getting a modern makeover, and there’s much more to come, with a 2026 iteration imminent. Its starting price has been heavily revised to Rs. 63.37 lakh (ex-showroom), making it highly competitive against German heavyweights like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3.
Seshan Vijayraghvan from car&bike checked out the Discovery Sport sometime back, providing us with insights regarding what works, what could have been better, and how the vehicle fares against the market's existing competition. We have added his snippets into this review as well, which you'll come across as you keep reading forward.
Land Rover offers the Discovery Sport with two familiar 2.0-litre Ingenium engines. You can choose either the petrol or the diesel, and both send power to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Both engines also feature mild-hybrid technology, but the PHEV variant does not come to the Indian market.
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 247 bhp | 365 Nm | Nine-speed automatic | Four-wheel drive |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Diesel | 201 bhp | 430 Nm | Nine-speed automatic | Four-wheel drive |
Driving Experience: Real World
The Discovery Sport has always been more about relaxed, confident cruising than top-end acceleration. The torque delivery is reliable ensuring effortles progress during daily commutes.
According to Seshan,
“The power build-up is strong and consistent, whereas the torque, which comes in from as low as 1750 rpm, is nice and punchy.”
City Driving
In city traffic, the 2.0-litre diesel engine shows a bit of initial turbo lag. However, once the revs climb past the 2,000 rpm mark, we got lively and consistent power. The nine-speed automatic gearbox prioritises smoothness over quick shifts, and can occasionally hesitate when you ask for sudden power at lower speeds, but it generally manages urban duties well.

Highway Driving
The SUV feels rock-steady on long NH stretches; it can easily hold triple-digit speeds all day long. The suspension beautifully masks uneven patches, keeping the cabin comfortable and quiet. Shift into Sport mode, and the gearbox wakes up, helping you in quick overtaking.
Seshan notes,
“The straight-line stability of this SUV is exceptional, and it also offers good control around the curves.”
Off-Road Driving
The Terrain Response 2 system alters the drivetrain settings to match the surface beneath the tyres. From mud and ruts to grass and gravel, the setup handles all tricky situations brilliantly. A 600 mm water wading capacity also ensures the SUV can easily cross flooded streets.
The Discovery Sport keeps its classic, upright stance alive. Instead of choosing sharp, aggressive creases, the styling team stuck to clean, smooth surfaces, and these age well over time.
The silver trims have been replaced with gloss black elements, giving the vehicle a sportier vibe. The bold wheel arches and familiar clamshell bonnet scream traditional SUV aesthetics. It might not be the largest vehicle in its class, but the well-proportioned dimensions mean it gets a strong road presence to show off.

Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Land Rover Discovery Sport | Audi Q5 | Volvo XC60 |
| Length | 4,597 mm | 4,682 mm | 4,708 mm |
| Width | 2,069 mm | 1,893 mm | 1,902 mm |
| Height | 1,727 mm | 1,655 mm | 1,655 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,741 mm | 2,819 mm | 2,865 mm |
The Discovery Sport is wider and taller than its direct German and Swedish rivals, at 1,727 mm and 2,069 mm, respectively. This extra width brings with it a roomier cabin, even though the wheelbase is interestingly shorter.
The exterior styling has gone through a subtle evolution. The recent updates are more like subtle changes rather than a complete makeover, as they focus on small, impactful changes.
Front Profile
- The fascia features a traditional grille with a sporty pattern finished in high-gloss black.
- The front air intakes house three black aero inserts, which Land Rover calls the 'three-finger' details.
- The LED headlamps have signature daytime running lights that easily grab attention on the road.
Side Profile
- A strong shoulder line runs from the headlights to the taillamps.
- The Indian-spec models ride on smart 19-inch alloy wheels, and they fill the chunky wheel arches nicely.
- Gloss black cladding wraps around the lower body, bringing the rugged, off-road appeal alive.
Rear Profile
- The back end stays clean and minimal, dominated by the familiar LED taillamps.
- The tailgate also has the bold 'Discovery' lettering spread across the centre.
The cabin represents the biggest shift for the Discovery Sport, as it completely drops the old layout for a highly minimalist, screen-heavy approach.
Cabin Layout and Quality
Step inside, and the dashboard closely mimics the top-tier Range Rover models. Soft-touch materials cover almost every surface, and the build quality feels incredibly solid. The new palm-sized gear shifter replaces the older, chunkier lever.
According to Seshan,
“The exterior doesn’t let you forget that this is the same Discovery Sport as earlier, but on the other hand, the cabin is completely new and feels more like the bigger, more premium Land Rovers.”

Seating Comfort
The seats have fantastic support and cushioning, particularly made so as to make long journeys more comfortable.
Front Row
The driver and co-driver get electrically adjustable seats wrapped in premium DuoLeather. Finding a comfortable driving position is easy, and outward visibility is great thanks to the tall windows. Ventilated front seats are available, too.
Second Row
The second-row bench offers generous legroom and headroom. The seats feature 60:40 split-folding, and they can slide and recline to maximise comfort. The large panoramic glass roof floods this area with natural light, making it feel very airy.

Third Row
We think the third-row seats are best reserved for young children. Adults will find the space too cramped for anything more than short, quick trips. Most owners will keep these folded flat to enjoy a massive boot capacity.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- An 11.4-inch Pivi Pro curved glass touchscreen that controls almost all vehicle functions.
- A crisp 12.3-inch interactive driver's display.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- A wireless phone charging pad tucked neatly in the centre console.
- A brilliant Meridian surround sound system with 10 speakers as standard.
The Discovery Sport is sold in a fully loaded Dynamic SE trim. Thanks to local assembly and recent price revisions, it now undercuts many of its direct rivals, making it a very lucrative deal.
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
Dynamic SE Petrol | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Nine-speed Automatic | Rs. 63.37 lakh |
Dynamic SE Diesel | 2.0-Litre Diesel, Nine-speed Automatic | Rs. 63.37 lakh |
Both engine options surprisingly carry the same price tag. For that price, buyers get a standard four-wheel drive and a cabin packed with luxury features.
Heavy luxury SUVs rarely return impressive fuel economy figures, and the Discovery Sport is no different. The sheer weight and the standard 4x4 hardware take a heavy toll on efficiency here.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
Engine & Transmission | ARAI-Claimed Mileage | City Mileage (Real-World) | Highway Mileage (Real-World) |
2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 10.5 kmpl | 6–8 kmpl | 9–11 kmpl |
2.0-Litre Turbo Diesel | 13.1 kmpl | 8–10 kmpl | 12–14 kmpl |
In typical city traffic, the diesel variant barely hits the 10 kmpl mark. Even though the automatic gearbox keeps the engine relaxed, moving over two tonnes of metal is not easy, so high fuel consumption is inevitable.
However, on the highway, consistent cruising at 90 kmph helps the diesel stretch its legs a bit, returning close to 14 kmpl. The petrol version is noticeably thirstier, so buyers with heavy daily running should definitely look at the diesel model.
Land Rover has always prioritised safety, and the Discovery Sport comes heavily equipped to protect its occupants. It scored a full five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The SUV has a tough chassis that absorbs impacts effectively. Seven airbags are standard, offering comprehensive protection for all occupants. Meanwhile, the SUV's doors shut with a heavy, reassuring thud, immediately communicating a strong sense of build quality. You also get ISOFIX child seat mounts and sturdy seatbelt pre-tensioners.

Active Safety and Stability Systems
The safety net includes advanced tech like Dynamic Stability Control, Roll Stability Control, and Electronic Traction Control. The 360-degree surround-view camera is incredibly clear, making it a breeze to park this wide SUV in tight city spots. The ClearSight ground view system acts as a transparent bonnet, letting you see exactly what is under the front wheels while tackling rough off-road trails.

Safety Verdict
The Discovery Sport packs all the essential safety gear required at this price point. While it now has select ADAS features, the core structural strength and excellent braking performance remain its biggest safety highlights.
The Discovery Sport has a heavily decluttered layout; nearly all physical dials are gone, with most of the functions getting digitised instead.
Infotainment and Interface
The dashboard's main highlight is the 11.4-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen. It looks sharp, has modern graphics, and you will also use this panel a lot, like changing the temperature, selecting your preferred terrain modes, etc.
According to Seshan,
"The new 11.4-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen display functions as the SUV’s main command centre. Yes, the idea and tech that has gone behind it are quite interesting, however, when you take the user perspective into account, it can get a bit annoying to use."
You also get a 12.3-inch digital driver's display. It effectively projects navigation data, speed, and media details right into your line of sight.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
The cabin is well-stocked with a Meridian Surround Sound System, which also has a subwoofer; audio fidelity is excellent and top-of-the-line. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, while there is also a convenient wireless phone charger placed up front.

Meanwhile, both front seats offer electrical adjustments, and the second row adds a 60:40 split, complete with sliding and reclining functions. A fixed panoramic glass roof is present as well, drastically improving the cabin's airy feel.
Land Rover markets this vehicle as a versatile three-row SUV, but the third row is extremely tight. Adults will find it impossible to sit there for long stretches, and boot space in this situation remains 157 litres. However, the best use case involves folding those two rear seats flat into the floor, as doing so unlocks a cavernous 1,794 litres of luggage volume. That is more than enough room to swallow heavy suitcases, golf clubs, and bulky gear for an extended weekend trip.

The underpinnings of this SUV are engineered to deliver surefooted confidence. It feels substantial on the road, balancing agility with heavy-duty comfort.
City Driving
In typical traffic, we found the 2.0-litre diesel engine a bit laggy, but the nine-speed automatic transmission works quietly in tandem to mask this flaw. At the same time, the gearbox prefers relaxed shifts over hurried responses at slow speeds, and the suspension effectively dampens road imperfections including nasty potholes and broken patches. You rarely feel jolts while inside the cabin.
Highway Driving
Get it out on an open stretch, and the straight-line stability seen is exceptional. The steering carries a nice, firm weight that breeds confidence at triple-digit speeds. While there is some unavoidable body roll if you attack a corner too fast, the grip levels are remarkably high.
Seshan points out,
"It is not too stiff nor too soft. Just the right balance and that is what I love about it."

Off-Road Driving
This domain is where the badge earns its keep. It features a standard all-wheel-drive system. The clever Terrain Response 2 system gives you specific modes for mud, sand, grass, and snow. You also get the ClearSight Ground View tech, acting like a transparent bonnet to expose hidden rocks. Plus, it tackles deep puddles with a solid 600 mm water wading depth.
Land Rover currently offers this luxury SUV in two engines (no other variants available). The updated pricing makes the line-up highly competitive, currently starting at Rs. 63.37 lakh for both options.
| Variant | Engine & Gearbox | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
| Dynamic SE Petrol | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Nine-speed Automatic | 11.4-inch touchscreen, panoramic roof, Meridian audio | Buyers wanting quiet refinement for daily city commutes |
| Dynamic SE Diesel | 2.0-Litre Diesel, Nine-speed Automatic | AWD, Terrain Response 2, punchy mid-range torque | Buyers planning frequent long-distance trips and trail drives |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- No officially-declared Level 2 ADAS
- PHEV variant not available in India

Since the Discovery Sport's features are more or less the same in both variants, the real competition here lies between petrol and diesel, the type of engine that you want to take home.
Best for Urban Commutes: Dynamic SE Petrol
If your daily routine involves navigating stop-and-go city traffic, the petrol engine makes a lot of sense. It runs incredibly quiet, and its power delivery is quite smooth, matching perfectly with the plush cabin atmosphere.
Best for Long-Distance Cruising: Dynamic SE Diesel
Highway runners should definitely pick the diesel. Once the rev needle crosses 2,000 rpm, the torque hits hard and stays strong. It gives you the necessary grunt for quick overtakes without forcing the engine to choke out near the redline.
Best for Occasional Trails: Dynamic SE Diesel
Off-road driving requires low-end torque, and the diesel variant naturally excels here. The 430 Nm of torque helps pull the heavy SUV over tricky obstacles with minimal throttle input, making it the smarter choice for weekend adventures.
The Rs. 60 lakh to Rs. 80 lakh price bracket is hotly contested. Rivals often give sharper handling or longer equipment lists here, but the Discovery Sport holds its ground with its unique mix of 5+2 seating and undeniable trail-rated hardware.

The BMW X3 is all about that unrivalled badge prestige, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC is another offering challenging the competition with a premium interior. The Volvo XC60 is a third formidable alternative, bringing with it state-of-the-art safety features. Against them, the Discovery Sport puts its practicality on the front foot.
| Model | Engine | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 2.0-Litre Petrol / Diesel | Versatile cabin layout, outstanding ride comfort | Rs. 63.37 lakh |
| BMW X3 | 2.0-Litre Petrol / Diesel | Engaging driving dynamics, premium cabin | Rs. 71.20 – Rs. 74.50 lakh |
| Mercedes-Benz GLC | 2.0-Litre Petrol / Diesel | High-end tech, luxurious interior | Rs. 75.50 lakh |
| Volvo XC60 | 2.0-Litre Petrol Hybrid | Safety tech, minimalist design | Rs. 71.90 lakh |
Which Mid-Size Luxury SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Land Rover Discovery Sport if you want a tough, family-friendly SUV with excellent ride comfort and great off-road skills.
- Choose the BMW X3 if your priority is sharp cornering and a driver-focused experience.
- Choose the Mercedes-Benz GLC if you value a glamorous cabin and the latest screen-heavy interior design.
- Choose the Volvo XC60 if you have rare Swedish taste and prefer minimalism over everything else.
Pros
- Incredibly balanced ride quality over broken tarmac
- Punchy mid-range performance from the 2.0-litre diesel
- Capable off-road tech, including 600 mm wading depth
Cons
- Relying purely on the touchscreen for AC controls is annoying
- No officially marketed Level 2 ADAS features
- The third row is cramped and mostly unusable for adults
Verdict
The Land Rover Discovery Sport does not try to out-accelerate a BMW X3, nor does it attempt to match the glamour that a Mercedes-Benz GLC has. Instead, it combines tough, practical utility with a highly refined ride quality, and also, the recent price drop to Rs. 63.37 lakh makes it an incredibly tempting deal in today's market. You get a premium badge, a flexible interior layout, and genuine all-terrain capability.
Overall, if you want an honest, hard-working luxury SUV that puts physical comfort and grip first over flashy gimmicks, this Land Rover is worth a close look.
Seshan summarises the Discovery Sport like this,
“Although cheaper than before, it offers great performance but misses out on some features. Yes, it is the same old wine in a new bottle; however, it’s a wine I can surely recommend.”
Land Rover Discovery Sport Mileage
Land Rover Discovery Sport mileage is 13 to 14 KM/L as per ARAI The Automatic Petrol engine has a mileage of 13 KM/L. The Automatic Diesel engine has a mileage of 14.1 KM/L.
| Fuel Type | Transmission | Mileage | City Mileage | Highway Mileage |
