What's New?

The Lexus RX will be available in two variants – The RX350h Luxury and RX500h F-Sport+

Price for the RX350h is Rs 95.8 lakh while the RX500h F-Sport+ costs Rs 1.18 crore

Bookings for the Lexus RX has already commenced at Lexus dealerships

Will be sold with a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol and high performance 2.4-litre turbo-petrol motor both available in a strong-hybrid avatar

After debuting at the Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi, Lexus India launched the RX SUV in India. The RX is available in two variants – RX350h Luxury, priced at Rs 95.8 lakh and RX500h F-Sport+, priced at Rs 1.18 crore (ex-showroom, India), respectively. The earlier generation of the RX was one of the first to be launched in India by the Japanese luxury car brand and has been one of the best-selling products in the portfolio offered by Lexus. The new platform also allowed Lexus to make significant changes to the overall dimension of the crossover SUV, liberating additional space on the inside.

Lexus has reworked the design of the RX for the fifth generation. It features a refreshed front section with the massive front grille now redesigned into a honeycomb mesh. The sculpted bonnet line also adds depth to the front fascia. The headlamps are sleeker and house the LED DRLs, below which is a smoked element on the lower section. The Lexus RX also grows in its stance with a larger set of 19-inch alloy wheels finished in dark grey machined finish with body-coloured over-fenders. Furthermore, the black panel on the C-Pillar gives the roof a floating appearance. Moving towards the rear, the SUV looks wider now thanks to the signature L-shaped light bar lamp around the sides of the body.

Step inside the RX, and you’ll notice that it follows a human-centred design with controls tuned towards convenience. A prime example is the opening of the door with a touch of the e-Latch system. The sunroof accentuates the roominess element, while ambient lighting enhances the overall experience. For the driver, Lexus offers steering-mounted controls, a HUD, and navigation along that displays on the 14-inch touchscreen like what we saw in the facelifted NX350h. Furthermore, It is also equipped with the latest Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 as standard for driver assistance and also is the first Lexus in India and Asia to come with connected features and services as standard.

As mentioned above, the RX is launched in two variants. The RX350h Luxury is powered by a 242bhp 2.5-litre turbo-charged motor that is mated to a CVT gearbox and also has strong hybrid assist that sends power to all four wheels. The quicker option is the RX500h F-Sport+, which produces 361bhp and 550Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, and Lexus claims that the F-Sport+ can do 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds. There is no evidence to suggest that Lexus will also be launching the front-wheel-drive RX350h.

With its price bracket, the RX SUV competes with some strong competition from the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the recently updated Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7.

Verdict

The RX450h is a comfortable long-distance cruiser; the ride deteriorates a bit with the F-Sport package, but the same package improves the somewhat cumbersome handling of the standard model. There is a suite of assistance and telematics systems, and the stereo system, in typical Lexus fashion, is top-notch. We wish the cabin were better isolated, but altogether, this is a solid and well-built performer.

The Lexus RX450h holds a important place in the automotive space as a pioneer when it comes to hybrid SUVs. Launched first in 2004, the car has defined Lexus’ brand image, and the RX450h remains the segment’s godfather even now. As the brand makes its debut in India, the RX450h arrives without any direct hybrid competitors, making it an intriguing offering in the ever-expanding luxury SUV market.

The aesthetic appeal of the Lexus RX450h is arresting right from the first glance. Take, for instance, the prominent X-shaped front grille, a defining element that’s not just a design feature but a statement. It demands attention, and yet, it’s seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s overall façade, giving it an almost avant-garde feel. The flanks are sculpted, chiseled to precision, lending the SUV a muscular silhouette that complements its otherwise sleek design. The windows come with a steeply raked angle, making it appear as if the car has been cut from a single block of futuristic vision. LED lighting systems are a highlight on the vehicle’s exterior, not just serving a functional purpose but enhancing its luxurious and modern aura.

Step inside, and you’re greeted with a high-tech, futuristic cocoon which is a welcome step when it comes to the brand. The RX450h offers a mix of luxury and technology and you get an intuitive cockpit layout featuring an ultra-wide head-up display. Though the remote touch controller in the center console feels underutilized, the vehicle scores high on comfort and quality with impressive wood/leather combinations and precisely operating knobs and buttons.

The Lexus RX450h comes loaded with advanced safety features, including a suite of driver assistance and telematics systems. From lane-departure warning to adaptive cruise control, the SUV is designed to not only protect but to also prevent mishaps. While it offers the standard airbags and traction control, what sets it apart is the flawless integration of these features with its hybrid powertrain.

Talking about the hybrid powertrain, an electric motor here is paired with a petrol engine, the RX450h offers satisfactory performance. The vehicle goes from 0-100 kmph in 7.8 seconds, a respectable figure considering its 2.2-ton weight. The transition between electric and hybrid modes is seamless, providing a driving experience that’s both fun and eco-friendly. However, don’t expect robust off-road capabilities; this SUV is more about luxurious cruising than mountain scaling.

When it comes to the ride and handling of the Lexus RX450h, one can expect a refined experience that befits its luxury status. The vehicle maneuvers like a graceful beast on urban roads, maintaining a balanced and smooth composure. The adaptive suspension system is a boon as it fine-tunes your ride in real time, ensuring comfort and stability throughout. The F-Sport package is worth considering too if you want a sportier feel, where the steering becomes more responsive. Though it makes the ride a tad stiffer on bumpy roads, it significantly enhances the SUV’s responsiveness. It’s a perfect example of how Lexus has striven to create an SUV that can be both a placid cruiser and an engaging drive.

Given its expansive feature list and the luxury tag that comes with the Lexus brand, prospective buyers should prepare for a premium investment. While the initial price tag might give you pause just like most cars from Lexus, the long-haul advantages of owning a hybrid might suit you. In short, the RX450h isn’t just a luxurious buy; it’s a smart, eco-friendly investment.

For those contemplating which variant of the RX450h to buy, the choice is relatively straightforward, at least in the Indian context. The model is launching as a hybrid-only option, which eliminates the need to choose between a traditional gasoline engine and a hybrid. For those who prioritize environmental consciousness without wanting to compromise on performance, the RX450h is a natural fit. However, if you are looking for a sportier edge, the F-Sport package is worth considering. It amplifies the vehicle’s handling dynamics and adds some aesthetic flair with sportier design elements. It caters to those who want a luxury SUV that offers a more engaging driving experience.

The RX450h faces competition from luxury SUVs offered by Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz but its hybrid technology gives it an edge in terms of fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness. Given Lexus’ reputation for quality and customer service, the RX450h stands strong against its rivals. The Lexus RX450h is an intriguing blend of futuristic design, advanced safety features, and groundbreaking hybrid technology. Its arrival in India is timely, offering luxury SUV buyers an eco-friendly alternative without compromising on performance or comfort. It’s not just a vehicle. It’s a statement.
