car&bike Expert Take

“The Maruti Suzuki XL6’s strength is that it offers a practical six-seater layout with captain seats, improved safety equipment and a refined petrol engine. While the XL6 may not be the most powerful MPV in its class, it is the predictable everyday usability that makes it suitable for urban families.”

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 was launched as the more premium, SUV-inspired sibling of the Ertiga, offered exclusively via the Nexa retail network. It provides a six-seater configuration with captain seats, improved styling, and added features over its more utilitarian cousin. Over the years, the XL6 has made a name for itself among buyers who want MPV practicality with a slightly more upmarket presentation.
The new XL6 has brought some subtle changes to the exterior, a revised grille, larger 16-inch alloy wheels, and updated lighting elements. More importantly, it introduced the 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine with Dual Jet technology and smart hybrid assistance. It also features a new six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The current range is available with petrol and CNG, although the CNG version is only available in the base Zeta trim.

The earlier five-seater configuration has been discontinued, and the XL6 is now available in a six-seater format only, with captain chairs in the second row. In the current market, it still competes head-on with the Kia Carens but also overlaps with the Maruti Ertiga and Toyota Rumion. Ameya Naik drove the XL6 at the time of the facelift launch, and some of the snippets from that evaluation are reflected throughout this review for real-world context.

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 is powered by a single 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is available in both standard petrol and factory-fitted CNG. Transmission options are a five-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic. We tested the two gearboxes in real-world conditions.

Engine Specifications

EnginePowerTorqueTransmission

1.5-litre Petrol + CNG87 bhp121.5 NmFive-speed Manual

1.5-Litre Petrol

This version is focused on refinement and efficiency. It is best used in urban driving and steady highway cruising. While it does not provide class-leading acceleration, it provides consistent performance.

1.5-Litre Petrol + CNG

The CNG version is tuned for the cost-conscious buyers. There is a reduction in power output in CNG mode, but the drivability of the vehicle is linear. In actual driving, the difference between petrol and CNG modes is noticeable only during hard acceleration. For laid-back commuting, performance is still acceptable.

Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving

Around the city, we noted that the throttle response is progressive, and the mild-hybrid assistance helps to maintain low-speed drivability. In stop-and-go traffic, both manual and automatic versions were easy to control.

Highway Driving

On highways, the XL6 cruises comfortably at 80-100 kmph. However, overtakes need planning, especially when fully loaded. The engine is not underpowered exclusively, but in comparison to turbocharged competitors, it requires more conscientious throttle input at higher speeds.

Transmission Behaviour

The six-speed automatic gearbox shifts easily during relaxed driving. It prefers early upshifts in order to maximise fuel efficiency. Pushing the engine too hard makes the noise more audible over 4,500 rpm. Paddle shifters are available with the automatic variant, which gives better control while overtaking.
The five-speed manual, on the other hand, is more engaging. Gear shifts are light, and clutch action is typical of Maruti's easy-to-drive character. For drivers who want more control over engine revs, the manual version is more responsive in everyday conditions.

The XL6 distinguishes itself from the Ertiga by adding body cladding, revised grille treatment, and larger 16-inch alloy wheels. Rather than being bulky, the XL6 has clean surfacing with upright proportions for family use. Here's an overview of the general design approach of the XL6:

  • The sweeping X-bar grille element provides a greater sense of front identity.
  • Black cladding and roof rails add a little SUV influence.
  • 16-inch alloy wheels give a better stance than the Ertiga's 15-inch set-up.
  • Smoked-effect tail lamps give the rear a more modern finish.

As noted by Ameya during his evaluation,
“The XL6 doesn't play the role of chasing aggression. It puts a focus on proportion and everyday presence as opposed to dramatic styling.”

Maruti Suzuki XL6 vs Kia Carens vs Toyota Rumion Vs Maruti Ertiga - Dimensions

The XL6 sits between the more compact Ertiga/Rumion twins and the larger Kia Carens. While sharing its wheelbase with the Ertiga, the XL6 appears more SUV-inspired with the addition of cladding, roof rails, and larger alloys. Compared to the Carens, it looks more compact and urban-friendly, with manoeuvrability more important than sheer road presence. It's not the biggest here, but it has a good balance in terms of size, stance, and everyday practicality.

We observed that the Maruti Suzuki XL6 offers a balanced look on the roads and combines the practicality of an MPV with the subtlety of an SUV.

Front Profile

The front fascia has a revised grille with chrome detailing and a sweeping X bar design. Quad-chamber LED reflector headlamps are combined with built-in LED DRLs, giving the vehicle an even more defined light signature. The bumper has silver-finished skid plate elements and black cladding.

Side Profile

The most obvious upgrade from the side is the 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. They improve stance and visual balance. The B- and C-pillars are finished in gloss black and give a floating roof effect to the profile, adding depth to the profile. Roof rails and protective cladding are located along the lower body. Door handles are still conventional and not flush-fitted, which further emphasises the functional approach.

Rear Profile

From the side, we observed that the smoked LED tail lamps have a slightly sportier tone, but are not connected by a light bar. A chrome bandwidth across the tailgate and bold XL6 lettering give contrast on darker body colours. One omission is still notable: a powered tailgate is not included, even on the top-spec Alpha+ variant.

Dual-Tone & Special Finishes

The XL6 comes in monotone and dual-tone colour options, with black roof combinations being reserved for higher trims. Shades like Nexa Blue and Brave Khaki match its SUV-inspired detailing well.

The interior of the Maruti Suzuki XL6 is meant to offer a more premium atmosphere than the Ertiga, but with simplicity.

Cabin Layout and Ambience

We observed that the dashboard features a stone finish insert with silver accents across the width. The black interior theme provides the cabin with a uniform look. Material quality is utilitarian as opposed to luxurious. Fitment is generally consistent, and soft-touch padding on the armrests improves perceived comfort. The large glass area and relatively low dashboard design help to create a sense of openness.

Ameya noted that

“The cabin is more about visibility and practicality than visual drama, which is fitting for its role as a family cabin.”

Seating and Practicality

Front Row

The front seats are quite wide and cushioned for long drives. Higher variants offer ventilated front seats, which are useful in warm conditions. The driver's seat is provided with height adjustment, and tilt + telescopic steering adjustment helps in improving the ergonomics of driving. Storage options include cooled cup holders, door pockets, and a spacious glovebox.

Second Row

The captain seats have individual armrests and slide/recline capability. During our seating evaluation, the knee and headroom were generous for the average-sized adult. Roof-mounted AC vents are an effective way to get air flowing to the back section. However, the lack of rear sunblinds and dedicated cupholders in the captain seats is a missed opportunity.

Third Row

The third row is usable for short journeys. Adults up to average height can cope with moderate distances, but there is limited under-thigh support. Entry requires sliding the captain seats forward as opposed to a full tumble mechanism.

Maruti Suzuki has placed the XL6 as a premium six-seater MPV in the Nexa range, above the Ertiga and below the bigger three-row SUVs. The pricing is indicative of that balance, but with enough separation to justify its added offerings and SUV-inspired styling.

Compared to the Ertiga, the XL6 commands a premium based mainly on its captain-seat layout, cosmetic differentiation, and added features. Against the Kia Carens, it sits slightly higher at the entry level despite only offering a petrol powertrain, which is something that buyers need to factor in.

Here are the official and real-world figures for the efficiency of the XL6:

Metric

ARAI Certified Mileage (Petrol Manual)

ARAI Certified Mileage (Petrol Automatic)

ARAI Certified Mileage (CNG Manual)

Real-World Mileage (Petrol Manual)

Real-World Mileage (Petrol Automatic)

11–14 kmpl

Real-World Mileage (CNG)

19–22 km/kg

For a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre MPV of this size, we found the mileage respectable, particularly in manual form. The automatic gives up a bit of efficiency in return for smoother cruising, but the sixth gear is beneficial on the highways. The CNG variant is the most economical for high-mileage individuals, with performance being more relaxed.

Unlike the older Maruti MPVs, which were often criticised for lagging on protection, the present XL6 now comes with six airbags as standard, which immediately adds to its appeal as a family vehicle. Structurally, the XL6 is built on the Heartect platform, which aims at the optimisation of weight in balance with the rigidity.

While the XL6 itself hasn't been crash tested independently, the Ertiga, which is built on the same architecture, achieved a three-star Global NCAP rating. That is far from being segment-leading, but it does serve as a baseline reference. Beyond airbags, the XL6 has essential electronic safety features you might find in this price category, such as:

  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
  • Hill Hold Assist
  • ABS with EBD and Brake Assist
  • ISOFIX child seat mounts

Higher trims include a 360-degree camera and tyre pressure monitoring system. These aren't groundbreaking features, but in everyday use, the 360-degree camera especially comes in handy given the length of the vehicle in tight urban parking spots. There is no ADAS suite, no blind spot monitoring, and no advanced collision mitigation tech.

The centrepiece is the seven-inch SmartPlay Pro infotainment system (from Alpha variant onwards). It supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the interface is responsive, as is typical for Maruti systems. That said, the lack of the larger nine-inch unit found in other Maruti models is noticeable, especially when other rivals such as the Kia Carens have more modern displays.

Suzuki Connect adds a layer of connected functionality. Through the app, you can remotely access vehicle location, AC controls (automatic variants), lock/unlock status, and driving behaviour data. In practice, the system works reliably, though not quite as sophisticated as some of the newer connected platforms in the market. Cabin convenience features are where the XL6 is putting its efforts with:

  • Ventilated front seats (Alpha+)
  • Cruise control
  • Push-button start/stop
  • Arkamys-tuned six-speaker sound system

The ventilated seats are especially useful in Indian summers, but are a bit audible at full speed. There is no sunroof, no ambient lighting package, no drive modes, and no powered tailgate.

With all three rows up, you get 209 litres of boot space. In other words, as per our observation, translates to:

  • Two medium soft bags or duffel bags
  • Weekly grocery runs for a family
  • Small cabin trolley bags (if placed in upright position)

Once you fold the third row flat, there is a space of 550 litres, and that is where the XL6 becomes really versatile. At this setting, it is able to accommodate:

  • Two to three full-size suitcases
  • Multiple cabin bags
  • Weekend travel luggage for four adults

With both the second and third rows folded, total capacity increases to 692 litres, which can fit bulky cargo as well as furniture pieces. But do note that the captain seats in the second row do not fold completely flat like bench-seat layouts, which slightly affects maximum load flexibility. In the CNG variant, the capacity of the boot is reduced to some extent because of the cylinder, but it has been packaged neatly to retain some usable depth.

We drove both the manual and automatic variants and observed that it is a family mover first, and that intent is apparent from the moment you start driving.

City Ride Quality

In the urban conditions, the suspension deals with broken patches and speed breakers with good composure. The slightly firmer setup compared to the Ertiga helps in improving the body control without losing comfort. Cabin disturbance over uneven roads is well contained. Low-speed manoeuvrability is another strong point as the light steering makes it easy to make U-turns and park.

Highway Stability

At highway speeds, the XL6 is steady on its feet, thanks to the 16-inch wheels. It cruises comfortably between 80-100 kmph without being unsettled. The steering, however, remains light even at higher speeds, which is good for comfort but not for engagement. Mild body roll when changing direction quickly is noticeable, though expected from a tall MPV.

As Ameya summed it up:

“It does not try to be sporty at all. It aims to be reassuring, and for a six-seater MPV, that's all that matters.”

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 is available in three main trims: Zeta, Alpha, and Alpha+, with petrol and automatic options available in most variants. A factory-fitted CNG option is restricted to base Zeta trim. Here's the simplified breakdown of what each variant offers:

What You Don’t Get

  • No diesel engine option
  • No sunroof
  • No ADAS or advanced driver-assistance features
  • No powered tailgate
  • No fully flat-folding second row

The choice of which XL6 is right for you depends very much on how much value you place on additional comfort features versus keeping the budget under control.

Best for Most Buyers: Alpha

You get the upgraded SmartPlay Pro system, leatherette upholstery, and 360-degree camera without stretching into top-end pricing. For the majority of families, this is the value-for-money option.

Best for Urban Automatic Comfort: Zeta AT

If your driving is mostly city-based, the torque converter automatic coupled to the smooth 1.5-litre engine makes daily commuting stress-free. The Zeta AT keeps things affordable while retaining core safety features.

Best for Feature Seekers: Alpha+

If ventilated seats and a complete feature package are important to you, then the Alpha+ makes sense. It is not radically different in the driving experience; however, it improves the comfort and perceived premium appeal.

According to Ameya:

“Alpha petrol manual or automatic provides the XL6's strengths of comfort, practicality, and refinement without paying for marginal additions.”

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 competes with the Kia Carens, while also being above the Maruti Ertiga and overlapping with the Toyota Rumion. Where rivals are trying to pack turbo-charged effects or sheer affordability, the XL6 muses over simplicity, refinement, and long-term usability.

Maruti Suzuki XL6 vs Competitors: A Quick Comparison

Toyota Rumion1.5L Petrol MT/AT20.51 kmplToyota badge reliability, similar package to the ErtigaRs. 10.44 – Rs. 13.73 lakh

The XL6 sits between the budget-friendly Ertiga and the feature-laden Carens. It is more premium than the Ertiga, but lacks the engine diversity and aggressive feature packaging of the Carens. Against the Rumion, the differentiation is mostly aesthetic and variant positioning.

Which Three-Row MPV Should You Choose?

  • Choose the Maruti Suzuki XL6 if you are looking for a refined petrol engine, captain seats as standard, and a balanced ride.
  • Choose the Kia Carens if engine choices, turbo performance, and depth of features are more important than simplicity.
  • Choose the Maruti Ertiga if maximum value and a seven-seat layout at a lower price are your priorities.
  • Choose the Toyota Rumion if brand perception and a slightly different positioning are what you are after.

Pros

  • Six airbags are now standard throughout the range
  • Smooth and refined 1.5-litre petrol engine
  • Comfortable captain seats in the second row
  • Good fuel efficiency, especially in CNG form
  • Easy to drive for everyday use

Cons

  • No diesel engine option
  • Limited boot space with all three rows up
  • No sunroof or advanced driver-assistance features
  • The second row does not fold totally flat
  • Performance feels modest when fully loaded

Verdict

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 provides predictable performance, decent fuel efficiency, and practical comfort for families who are not interested in novelty and more in usability. It is not the most powerful in its segment, nor the one with the most features. But it does deliver what many buyers really need: a reliable, easy-to-drive six-seater with sensible running costs, and a premium touch over the Ertiga.

If your best interests are in pumped-up thrills or the latest technology, there are other options in the market. But if your focus is balanced comfort, everyday refinement, and practicality in the long run, the XL6's still a logical and well-rounded choice.

As Ameya summed it up during his evaluation:

“It doesn't try to be the leader in the segment in terms of headlines, it tries to be the leader in terms of liveability.”
