What's New?

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe was launched in India on March 3, 2020, and it’s the first non-AMG Coupe SUV from the carmaker in India. While the Coupe-SUV has come to India for the first time, globally this is the facelift version of the SUV that was unveiled last year. Previously India only got the AMG version of the car – Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, however, for the first time, the company has brought in the regular version of the coupe SUV. The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is a direct rival to the BMW X4 in India.

Visually, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe comes with a new diamond-stud mesh pattern grille with a single chrome slat running across and the three-pointed logo at the centre. The SUV features new LED headlamps, with integrated LED daytime running lights, and an aggressive-looking bumper with chrome inserts specially added for the Indian market. However, the key differentiating element, compared to the regular GLC SUV, is the sloping roofline that makes it stand out. The GLC Coupe also gets a set of sporty 19-inch alloy wheels along with re-designed LED taillamps and dual exhaust system at the back.

Inside, the GLC Coupe comes with updated interior and a revised dashboard, featuring a new flat-bottom multi-functional steering wheel. The Coupe SUV also comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, equipped with the latest generation of the AI-based MBUX Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system that enables the 'Mercedes Me' connected car tech. The system comes with voice command function so all you need to do is say Hey Mercedes and ask it for directions, control the audio system, or even access the climate control. The car also gets state-of-the-art driving assistance systems such as exit-warning function, emergency-corridor function and tail-end-of-traffic-jam function, among others. New features include Trailer Manoeuvring Assist, which assists when manoeuvring in reverse. And of course, there is a 360-degree camera as well.

Under the hood, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe comes with the option of either 2.0-litre petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel engine. While the petrol unit is tuned to offers 254 bhp and 370 Nm of torque, the diesel engine makes 242 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are taken care of by the tried and tested 9G-Tronic automatic transmission as a standard fitment, and Mercedes is also offering its capable 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system as standard along with five driving modes.

Verdict

AMG, Mercedes' esteemed performance division, has significantly influenced the brand's strategy in India. The AMG GLC43 Coupe stands out with its robust performance and practicality, provided one acclimates to the firmer suspension. It commands attention as a large, bold, and swift Coupe SUV. For those seeking a high-performance SUV without crossing the crore-rupee threshold, the AMG GLC43 Coupe offers an attractive blend of power, presence, and value.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe: A Class Apart

Mercedes-Benz introduced its state-of-the-art C-class-based GLC SUV, a testament to the brand’s commitment to progress and passion. The segment which was once dominated by the illustrious Audi Q5 and the dynamic BMW X3 witnessed new blood with the arrival of the GLC Coupe SUV. While the AMG variant is what India gets, the sheer excitement it brings leaves us with no room for complaints. After all, every masterpiece has its unique story to tell.

Design and Styling

Distinct from its SUV sibling, the GLC Coupe embodies sportiness. Its stretched silhouette by approximately 80mm and a reduced height by about 40mm give it an athletic stance. The signature coupe-rear design, chrome-tipped diamond grille, and the larger twin-louvred air intakes establish its premium and sporty credentials. Adorning chrome embellishments and sitting atop 19-inch wheels, this vehicle is an epitome of sophistication. With its heartwarming charm, one can easily picture it gracing various occasions – be it a corporate meeting or a high-end gala evening.

Interior and Features

Step inside, and you’re wrapped in Mercedes’ signature luxury. With top-tier fit and finish, familiar elements such as the gear selector, electrically adjustable seats adjuster, and the MBUX infotainment system. While accommodating five comfortably, the head room and boot space is slightly compromised due to the sloping roofline. However, with sporty all-black interiors accented by red stitching, red seat belts, flat-bottomed steering wheel, the cabin invites and excites.

Safety

When it comes to securing its passengers, the GLC Coupe leaves no stone unturned. Safety is prioritized with multiple airbags, responsive braking systems, and a vigilant electronic stability control. These systems work in unison, constantly assessing and adapting to driving conditions. The car’s active safety features constantly monitor driving conditions, ready to intervene at the slightest hint of danger. From its sturdy frame designed to dissipate impact energy to the smart sensors that adjust airbag deployment according to the severity of a collision, every aspect is meticulously crafted. It’s not just about getting from one point to another; it’s about ensuring that every journey is a safe one, no matter the destination.

Engine and Performance

Under the sleek exterior, the power of the AMG-engineered 3-litre V6 engine is evident. Delivering an impressive 362 bhp and 520 Nm of torque, this machine effortlessly accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in a mere 4.9 seconds. Partnered with a 9-speed automatic transmission, the power is deftly managed across all wheels, with a bias towards the rear, ensuring spirited drives every time. Its sound profile, though not matching a V8, is music to an enthusiast’s ears.

Ride and Handling

The AMG GLC Coupe is not just a car; it’s an experience. With a powerful 3-litre V6 engine under its hood, every road becomes a playground, every curve an invitation. But it’s not just about raw power; it’s about control. While the ride leans towards the firmer side, characteristic of an AMG, it’s precisely this that provides unmatched stability even at higher speeds. Rough terrains might pose a challenge, but the coupe’s robust construction ensures that passengers are cradled in comfort. The delicate symphony of the exhaust, the smooth transitions of the 9-speed automatic transmission, and the impeccable power distribution to all wheels make driving more than just a task; it becomes a passion, an art. And even when the road gets a bit challenging, the GLC Coupe dances over obstacles with grace, ensuring that every ride is as thrilling as the destination itself.

Pricing

Navigating the world of luxury often comes with a price, and the AMG GLC Coupe is no exception. The price of the GLC coupe was between 73.5 lakh and Rs 83.10 lakh.

Which Variant to Buy?

With the AMG GLC Coupe, the purchase decision is tinged with the hues of luxury and performance. The AMG variant, with its roar and prowess, is an obvious choice for those with a thirst for adrenaline. However, for those who yearn for the elegance of the GLC Coupe combined with a slightly softer touch, the regular GLC Coupe could be a tantalizing possibility.

Competition

The AMG GLC Coupe, with its blend of elegance and prowess, competes against another offering from Stuttgart, the Porsche Macan. It is another marvel of engineering that steps forward as a worthy adversary. With its emblematic design and a legacy steeped in racing heritage, the Macan promises an equally compelling journey, albeit with a different rhythm. While it may not match the raw power that the AMG GLC 43 Coupe exudes, it compensates with its own brand of sophistication and precision.
