car&bike Expert Take

“The Bajaj Pulsar 220F is still an iconic machine for Indian roads thanks to its punchy mid-range, a comfortable highway ride, and bulletproof reliability. That familiar semi-faired design and aggressive stance keeps attracting buyers who want proven performance though high speed vibrations remain a con.”

Since it first launched in 2007, the Bajaj Pulsar 220F has undergone several changes over 15 years to meet changing emission standards while sticking to its initial core identity. Today, Bajaj Auto’s workhorse is fully compliant with BS6 Phase 2 norms and has a fuel-injected, oil-cooled engine focused on offering consistent power delivery.

Bajaj Pulsar 220F

Looking at its market placement, we can clearly understand who the Bajaj Pulsar 220F’s closest competitors are: the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V and the Hero Karizma XMR. But the Pulsar holds its market value well against them with its straightforward, mechanical riding experience. Our team at car&bike has often reviewed this two-wheeler’s performance throughout its long run in the subcontinent, with Jafar Rizvi writing a recent piece about it on our website.

The update mostly shared how the company has issued a clarification that the bike continues to be produced with single-channel ABS. It also has a digital-analogue instrument cluster and a capable suspension setup that can handle broken city roads easily.

What makes the Bajaj Pulsar 220F consistently engaging is its dependable 220 cc engine. Bajaj has finetuned the most out of this motor for immediate torque, so that overtaking remains an effortless task. The power required to achieve this is channelled through a five-speed manual gearbox, which has a strong mid-range pull that riders love.

According to Jafar,

“Beyond the aforementioned updates, nothing else has changed. Power comes from the 220 cc, air- and oil-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 20.6 bhp and 18.55 Nm of torque.”

City Riding Experience

In heavy traffic, the Bajaj Pulsar 220F’s clutch feels relatively light to engage, and there is sufficient low-end torque, making sure you do not have to keep changing gears. It’s a nimble, punchy machine due to its lower kerb weight and manageable handling, but the wide turning radius can get slightly tricky in tight situations.

Highway Riding Experience

On open roads, the motorcycle’s best cruising capabilities lie between 80 and 100 kmph. The clip-on handlebars and semi-fairing design offer good wind protection, which makes the riding position comfortable for long highway transits. However, we noticed some high vibration levels at higher speeds on this bike.

Throughout updates, the Bajaj Pulsar 220F has retained its traditional muscular profile. Its visual footprint has that large front fairing that justifies its heavy, planted stance. While modern competitors are going for sharp, compact designs, Bajaj has chosen to stay traditional, so that the bike resonates with touring enthusiasts.

Jafar points out,

“The year-end update for the Pulsar 220F is limited to cosmetic revisions.”

Proportions & Stance

This motorcycle is taller than many modern street naked bikes like the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V and the Hero Karizma XMR.

Build Quality & Materials

The bike’s switchgear and body panels all feel durable; Bajaj has made them capable of withstanding years of rough use. Most of them are plastics, but they are of decent quality, covering the tried-and-tested double-cradle frame. However, the tank is composed of metal, and it feels more premium over plastic alternative, while the clip-on handlebars are reliably sturdy.

Bajaj Pulsar 220F Colours

Bajaj Auto has multiple dual-tone paint schemes available for the Pulsar 220F.

  • Volcanic Red with black and white graphics
  • Pearl White with red accents
  • Sparkle Black with red graphics
  • Sapphire Blue with contrasting decals
Bajaj Pulsar 220F Colour

The Bajaj Pulsar 220F relies on its old-school silhouette to define its exterior profile; this one has barely looked a single day different over the years. The half-fairing fits cleanly with the muscular 15-litre fuel tank, and while rivals focus on minimal bodywork, this motorcycle sticks to being bulky and substantial. But the aerodynamic fairing is not just a visual gimmick; it actually channels wind away from the rider during high-speed highway runs.

Lighting & Front Identity

Lighting & Front Identity

  • The front side keeps the bike’s iconic vertically stacked headlight cluster.
  • For the low beam, it uses a halogen projector that offers excellent night-time illumination.
  • The conventional vertically stacked projector setup with a reflector remains for the high beam, but now features twin LED DRLs and sleek LED blinkers.
Bajaj Pulsar 220F on side stand

Side Profile & Rear Section

  • From the side, the motorcycle looks long and stable.
  • The large exhaust muffler has a matte black finish with a chrome heat shield.
  • At the back, the signature twin LED taillights make the bike instantly recognisable in traffic.

Practical Integration

  • The fairing-mounted rear-view mirrors offer a good field of vision, but they noticeably vibrate at higher engine speeds.
  • The bike also gets a split-seat arrangement along with sturdy grab rails to keep the pillion rider comfortable and secure.

Pros

  • Excellent mid-range torque for effortless overtakes
  • Comfortable ergonomics for long-distance highway touring
  • Newly added digital console with Bluetooth and USB charging

Cons

  • The overall design feels aged compared to modern rivals
  • Lacks dual-channel ABS, which is expected at this price point
  • Engine refinement drops at high RPMs

Verdict

The Bajaj Pulsar 220F is a solid example of why good engineering often outlasts flashy competition. Yes, it may not have the liquid-cooled engines or aerodynamic winglets of newer motorcycles. Still, it gives exactly what it promises: raw power, road presence, and reliability. Recent updates also equipped the bike with a fully digital console, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB charging port. But Bajaj should have done one more thing here, we admit; the Indian manufacturer should have updated the bike with dual-channel ABS.

The bike is also certainly not the sharpest handling machine around tight corners, nor the most refined at the redline. But if you look past these shortcomings and focus on how affordable, comfortable, and highway-friendly the Bajaj Pulsar 220F is, you can call it a mass-market champion. It’s a no-nonsense motorcycle offering immense value for money, clearly demonstrating why the Bajaj badge has so much weight in the Indian market.

Jafar concludes in his review,

“One of the longest-running models in the Pulsar lineup, the 220F has consistently been among Bajaj’s better-selling offerings. It has garnered considerable attention from riders across all age brackets since its launch in 2007. Bajaj Auto had discontinued the model in 2021 following the launch of the 250 series, but brought the 220F back in 2023.

Everything is excellent for it but only issue with this bike is the front fairing visor vibration s which Bajaj could not workout although being in market for almost 15 years now , it's so bad and pathetic feels like honey bees sitting in front of u really . Although this is my 2nd . 220 I had thought it might be improved but it's the same with new graphic, abs , and minute changes . That's all and what's has to be worked out vibration s it's still there ..
